Another enlightening video, Gisselle, which went a long way to my understanding of how the Egyptian people are keeping ancient traditions and customs alive. Your experience takes me back to one of my last visits to see my local friends on the West Bank of the Nile in Luxor. They invited me back to their family home for an evening meal (where generations of the family live), and asked if I would like pigeon. Of course I graciously accepted, without really knowing what I was letting myself in for! I had visions in my mind of the scavenging nature of these creatures in multiple cities of the world! Ah, Anthony Bourdain, may he rest in peace. He was my idol when I was younger, such a cool guy and an inspiration for me back in the day. I don't know what restaurant he went to when he made that video (I have seen it long ago), but I was considering going to a restaurant right outside Khan el Khalili there called Farahat to film this video. However, I read some reviews online and wasn't loving it, maybe it's passed it's glory days, I'm not sure. But it was a debate between that restaurant and the one I ended up filming at. I decided I wanted to go to a place that doesn't appear in a lot of articles and searches (Farahat does), and also since somebody (that I can't remember) recommended me this place. Also because downtown is closer to me than Khan el Khalili 😅 Regardless, there is pigeon found at many, many restaurants around the city, so there's always plenty of options. I liked the place that I went to, although the background noise was pretty loud, I discovered upon editing 😆 Thanks so much for watching! 🙏❤
Another of my favorite dish definitively the stuffed one . Well Gigi thanks so much for keeping my memories alive........Yalla have a nice week ..... 🤩🤩🤩
You must! But order something else because you will likely still be hungry - very little meat on the bird, and the rice is tasty, but still not filling enough to be a meal.
There are several reasons why I cannot honor this request. The first is minimal, but I do not live near any large supermarkets, which would require me to go out of my way to film that. But I could always take the time out of work to go to a large supermarket and film. The real reason is, none of the supermarkets allow you to film inside. I have managed very short, sneaky shots, as seen in this video I made about prices in Egypt: ua-cam.com/video/0CJ-ERMEBq4/v-deo.html But to film a longer video, it is near impossible. I tried at Carrefour once, which is far from me, but I took the time to go out here and film there a while back, and this is what happened: ua-cam.com/video/ktBS_itmhq4/v-deo.html

Hi!! I enjoy watching your videos ❤ I lived in Egypt in 2019 and had so many delicious foods but, I never dared to try pigeon OR fesikh. 🤐 Keep up the awesome videos 😍
And a completely different side note not pigeon related. I just completed six wonderful weeks in Egypt and referred to your blogs often for ideas or suggestions. Thanks for doing the blog. You must be costing Lonely Planet millions. Why buy a travel book when we have you. Also thanks for being upbeat and realistic with your point of view. So many people trash the place after they had one encounter with a pushy tout. I've traveled a lot over the years and this is for sure my favorite trip. Thanks again.
Ah, that's so awesome to hear Robert! We should have met up for some lunch while you were in Cairo! That would have been cool to meet you, I know you're a long time subscriber ❤ Maybe next time 😄 And I 100% agree, lots of people trash the place after one or two bad experiences with pushy touts, it's seems it's a popular bandwagon to jump on. But in my opinion, it's not as bad as it is portrayed on the internet, especially if you are well traveled like yourself and know how to deal with it. And aside from that, those people tend to congregate in touristic areas. If you're just out in normal areas or local areas, it's almost non-existent. Happy to hear you loved Egypt ❤ Start planning your next trip here 😆😍
Pigeons' meat is like the meat of cows or calfs mixed with the meat of chicken it's something between them i love it alot btw specially with spiced rice
One of the things that confused me the most in speaking in Egypt....Pigeon and bathroom 😳. I still can not hear the difference in pronunciation....luckily Egyptians are smart when deciphering my bad arabic and always knew i was asking for a bathroom and not a pigeon HAHHA
Agh, I know! I still don't get this right either 😭 Some days yes, other days no. But yes, at least they always point me in the right direction, even if I did just ask them for a pigeon 🤣

Ps a suggestion for a future video, read that Ibn Tulin mosque only one in Cairo that has the steps going up n around on the outside of the minerate.

🤣 Dionysis!!! Haha, what's up man?! That was so much fun with you guys that day, I honestly really loved it. I hope you come back again, we'll definitely have more adventures on your next visit! ❤😎
My beloved late mother used to love this stuff. She used to call it “hammam mashy” or stuffed pigeon as you said. on the other hand, let me be polite, I may look like an Egyptian but when it comes to this particular “delicacy” I couldn’t be more foreign. Have you tried “feseish” yet. That is raw preserved fish. It is a Coptic dish served in Easter or as they call it “sham el niceem”or spring. I don’t know if our Muslim Egyptian brethren partake in this particular delicacy as well? Be forewarned, it is a dish not for the faint of heart.
Lol, funny you mention that! That video will upload next Sunday, and I am trying it and filming it tomorrow (that, as well as renga - smoked herring). Actually, tomorrow is a holiday for all Egyptians, both Muslim and Christian alike. Sham El-Nassim (literally "smell the breeze") goes back to ancient Egypt (but I'll explain more about that in the video). So yeah lots of people eat fseekh and renga on this holiday happening tomorrow, though Coptic Christians certainly do because the fasting that came before Easter is finally over and they're able to go off the vegan diet and eat fish again (as well as other non-vegan stuff). I already know I'm going to hate fseekh 🤣, but I gotta try it, it's been being eaten since ancient times!
@@Gventures you know about renga too! I had all but forgotten it. I didn't know it was made from herring fish. i didn't even know Herring was native to Egypt. I always thought herring was a cold water fish. I am looking forward to your next video. If I may make a strong suggestion about your adventure with fseech tomorrow. don't eat it in your home, don't eat it indoors if you can help it.
@@cherifbar Haha, thank you, I do plan to eat it outside. I've already been thinking about how to transport it to the park I was planning on eating in....maybe I'll just eat it on the street instead of driving to the park, because there's no way I'm putting that fish into my backpack🤣
I can't, sorry mate! Those expat type of videos are outside of my category or field, and renting is certainly one of them. Too many variables, too complicated, and too difficult for me to film. Your best bet is to share an apartment with people and just rent a room, or rent an airbnb, in my opinion. Finding a fully furnished apt all for yourself that is available to rent for only a few months is not going to be easy to find, because those types of places usually require longer contracts. Renting is a pain here, I hated looking for an apt myself 😅
Breeding pigeons for food moved from ancient Egypt to Greece and from there to Italy, and to this day you will find in the countryside of Italy that eating pigeons is a natural thing, and then it moved to some places in Europe. Over time, raising pigeons for food moved to the Middle East, the Levant region in particular, and after the discovery of oil in the Gulf. It was easy for the Arabs there to import grains for pigeons, something that was not possible before the oil wealth, and now they are raising them for food. This was helped by the Egyptian countryside series, which whetted the Gulf’s appetite for pigeons.

I don't believe that the current Egyptians are the same as the ancient Egyptians, but after knowing the amount of different food we still keep from that time i started to rethink
Almost no one is exactly the same as their ancestors were thousands of years ago, especially in areas of the world that had a massive amount of people for that time period, with different invaders sweeping through over the millennia, of course things mixed. But they are certainly your ancestors, almost anyone in Egypt is going to be more closely related to the ancient Egyptians than someone from anywhere else in the world, that's for sure. Like me. I'm not related at all to the ancient Egyptians 😅

I'm not sure, but let me refer you to this video I made about visa on arrival ua-cam.com/video/BXQ8VgUhMBc/v-deo.html In the comment section of that video, "Modestfashionwithshumayla" left this comment (I copy pasted her comment below): "Let me update you on my travel experience to Egypt. As GCC residents, my husband and I traveled to Egypt. Presenting our residency permits (iqama), we smoothly navigated through the visa process. Without sticker visas, we traveled after they saw our exit stamp from Saudi Arabia. However, it's worth noting the airline's requirement for a visa. To meet this requirement, we obtained an e-visa from atyls, saving us $25." Maybe that will help answer your question? Or perhaps scroll through the comments and see if anyone else has made similar comments. Best of luck!

The pegions in Egypt are either street pegions like any other country, and these are not food, while the pigeon we eat are raised and fed like chicken. . So its not the weirdest thing or something.
Of course, you hear me explain there is a difference in the video. But, most people think of the street pigeons when they hear of someone eating pigeon, and it captures people's attention for the beginning of the video. Such is the way of creating content.

My guide pointed out this numerous Pidgeon entrapments throughout our excursions. I had to try it. That opportunity presented itself at Khan El Khalil Restaurant during a break at the bazaar. Glad to hear you enjoyed Egyptian cuisine, overall. Pigeon isn't for everyone, but I personally enjoy it, the little bit of meat I get, anyway 😅 For the most part the only thing I taste is the rice in stuffed pigeon, which tastes good to me, I like the spices. As Egyptian young kid i hated the idea of eating pigeons well wasn't my thing but yeah you have right they consider it as luxus delicacy not even something to have full stomach with 😅
Pigeon meat has quite high nutritional value, 9 times more than chicken meat. The dishes made from pigeon meat have a very good effect on nourishing the body, especially for women who are pregnant, malnourished children, or people who have just woken up and it increases sexual desire.

funeral music for the pigeons :D :D ... I don't know if you know "because you know almost everything :D about Egypt" that the kinds of pigeons are not all for eat! the pigeons that you are eating or available in the markets are those called " Zaghloul" means the young home raised pigeons that eat only legumes like small beans and may be eating some special dry corn. Generally even the wild pigeons are not for eating and also the adult pigeons are not for eating too. best wishes 🌺
Yes I did know that 😁 I did say in the video there are special pigeons raised for consumption, and that there are other pigeons used for racing and other stuff. The ones for eating are usually young (like 2-3 years, but I didn't mention that in the video, I guess I could have 😅). And of course there are just the street city pigeons pecking around, of course those aren't eaten, those are the flying rats us Westerners refer to 😆 Thanks for your input 🙏❤
I don't like pigeons, but I don't like chicken and ducks either, I don't see why westerners find it strange to eat flying birds, while it's okay to eat birds that can't fly, we're not judging birds after all! 😅

I can barely understand or speak Arabic, let alone write subtitles in Arabic 😅 But there are subtitles you can now enable in UA-cam settings, Arabic is an option because I put it as an option. You just need to click on settings in the bottom right corner of the video and look for that option (should be automatic - then select Arabic). The title is in both English and Arabic, but my boyfriend writes the Arabic title because I of course cannot. English will always be the first title for the video, as it is my native language and the language spoken (by me 😅) in the video
Most of the Arab or African world does not understand English, but I mean you write in the video Egyptian dishes in Arabic or American in Egypt for that everyone knows the title of the video
Pigeon is like a worse version of chicken, it's more expensive than chicken despite having more bone, less meat, and it doesn't even taste as good, I really don't get why people consider it to be a delicacy.
You're right about the first two points, there is more bone and less meat, but the taste part of your comment is really more subjective, to you it doesn't taste as good, but to some other people, it does.

Hi,
Would you please consider a video on Supermarkets in Cairo? Particularly larger Supermarkets.
Thank You
There are several reasons why I cannot honor this request. The first is minimal, but I do not live near any large supermarkets, which would require me to go out of my way to film that. But I could always take the time out of work to go to a large supermarket and film. The real reason is, none of the supermarkets allow you to film inside. I have managed very short, sneaky shots, as seen in this video I made about prices in Egypt:
ua-cam.com/video/0CJ-ERMEBq4/v-deo.html
But to film a longer video, it is near impossible. I tried at Carrefour once, which is far from me, but I took the time to go out here and film there a while back, and this is what happened:

Hello Giselle, while watching your video, I was hungry.. hahaha..... yes.. I tried once in Egypt ( stuffed pigeon) so delicious...
Enjoy ur time friend.. Thanks for video.. I love pigeons alot. I turned out vegetarian two months ago, But I still eat pigeons cuz I think it's vegetable 😂🤭

Haha, pigeon is good. But feseekh?! Well....you'll see this Sunday 🤣 Thanks for watching señorita 🥰
Good blend of interesting food, history n definitely love ur comment on the layers of Egypt. It is a fascinating n stimulating culture. Never humdrum in Egypt! Thank u again.
Ps a suggestion for a future video, read that Ibn Tulin mosque only one in Cairo that has the steps going up n around on the outside of the minerate.
Oh really? I haven't researched much on that mosque yet, though I do plan to explore more mosques in the future, and research more about each one before I make videos about them. Good to know, thanks Judith 🥰🙏

I've already been thinking about how to transport it to the park I was planning on eating in....maybe I'll just eat it on the street instead of driving to the park, because there's no way I'm putting that fish into my backpack🤣
what editing software do you use ? I'm thinking about vlogging
Filmora 😁 It's cheaper because it's a one time payment for life vs. monthly or yearly subscriptions. Good luck!
Hello I watched all your video can you please make video on renting furnished apartments in downtown Cairo for like couple of months thank you 😊
I can't, sorry mate!

Like me. Can you write the title the video in Arabic is better if you want more views it will be in Arabic
