Lincoln stated the single largest contribution to his changing stance with Slavery was reading Capt James Riley book 'Sufferings in Africa'. The book publisher renamed it from the original title for political correction and sales. The book told of the Captain's boat wreck in Africa and being taken prisoner for two or three years. The life he and his sailors experienced as slaves. 1817? No the states did not refuse to put Lincoln's name on the ballot. It was a poorly ran campaign that didn't get his name put on much of the Southern states. Then he still won the Electoral College. That's why SC succeeded. Lincoln was a politician's politician.
