    The only video which explains properly when and how to peel

  • @DennisJacksonvts

    Great video! I love practicing this skill. Knowing when to drop back or stay up at the net is so hard because everything is happening so fast and there's a ton of information you're taking in. If the set tight to the net? Is the set off the net? Blocking is hard enough as it is if you just commit and stay up... but when you add in option to drop back to help out with defense, this is a really hard skill to get good at. I think the key to when first starting out is to focus on not getting caught in between. So basically, if you're going to drop, be sure to go early enough to get in position to defend. And if you decide to stay up, be sure to get in position to block and not get there late. Better to get there too early than get there late when there's no chance to make the play.

      I love what you said about being fully committed to one decision but I want to add on, READ! If you decide to peel, you are now simply a non-blocking defender which means, you should read and react to what the hitter is doing. If you see them starting to reach forward or breaking out a pokey, STOP the peel and go after what you see is about to happen... Thanks for the comments. Keep em coming!

    I agree, I mostly block just to make sure I don't get beat on set overs, getting a stuff is just an added bonus. Great video, very well organized.

    This video was great and very helpful, but I would love a whole video on playing defense and how to when both players don’t block and stay down.

      @@betteratbeachvolleyball Hi, I love the content of your videos. A suggestion for video/topic would be, how to choose the offensive move on an offset?
      Hard roll, high and deep, short cross, short line... depending on the defensive players peeling or not. Just an idea

    I’m definitely gonna try this out the next time! But what about the footwork to receive drop balls after you peel?

    • @betteratbeachvolleyball
      @betteratbeachvolleyball  4 роки тому +3

      Run your little heart out!. haha.. But seriously, you should always keep your eyes up on the hitter. The short kills happen because players think they need to get to a specific distance on the court rather than moving AND SEEING what the hitter is trying to do. Most often you can get the dig because you'll see the hitter trying for a short peel so you simply stop mid-peel and stay short. Hope that helps!

    Mark, I tend to drift into the court when I pull line. I cant seem to keep my vision on the hitter as I go into that crossover step. So either I keep the vision and drift in, or I turn more and lose sight of the hitter for a moment as I turn more to keep from drifting in.
    Do you have any suggestions on how I can work on dropping straight back while keeping vision on the hitter?
    Thanks man.

    • @betteratbeachvolleyball
      @betteratbeachvolleyball  5 років тому +1

      Without seeing you live, I can't tell why you aren't able to keep your eyes on the hitter while retreating. Maybe its just your habit? But it's gotta break. Remember that you should be peeling according to what you see. If its impossible for that person to hit fast to one part of the court then you should be drifting into the other part. If you haven't gotten hundreds and hundreds of reps peeling with focus, then this might be an answer. Have your partner stand on your side of the net. Peel focusing on eyes forward and just have them tap a ball at your face. The video also discussed the back pedal peel which in the men's game, is and should be used more frequently. Try that out as well. Thanks for watching!
