Yebin Mok skates Short program from the 2003 U.S National Championships. Coached by Frank Carroll, Johnnie Bevan. Choreographed by Irina Yelchin. 5th place
I remember the first time I watched this program... It had a great impact on me. Music choice is perfect, coreaography is superb, presentation and skating skills are amazing. I often come here to check this program again.
I sense that there was a strong political undercurrent coming from all directions against Yebin. In terms of coaching, Frank Carroll already had Michelle Kwan at the top, and the judges ‘owed’ placements to the Scotvolds, Mr. Nicks, Tom Z, and others. Additionally, they couldn’t rank Sarah Hughes, the reigning Olympic champion, lower than 2nd or 3rd, regardless of her performance. So, perhaps, no matter how well Yebin skated, the best she could hope for was 5th or 6th.
This is so good on so many levels. First, the power generated from the legs is excellent and allows her to have great posture. The jump technique is very good (look at the steadiness of the landing edge), the spins are well done and steady, the extension gorgeous and there is a solidity and steadiness in the movement across the ice that shows grace and power all in one. Under-rated and under-marked. I think many skaters were under-rated in the Michelle Kwan era. A pleasure to watch this performance.
I agree 100%. I remember seeing this program and I thought Ive never seen such an excellent program- so good I thought it was comparable to Michelle Kwan's grace> I thought, wow, if Michelle retires, the grace of figureskating will transfer nicely to this skater. She has such amazing grace and flow on the ice, nothing is rushed, moves all the way to her fingertips. just amazing!!
This is what makes our sport so unpredictable... Young skaters like Yebin end up not making it in the senior ranks. Everything about her skating--from the jumps, spins, edging, posture to speed--looks pretty close to perfection here, yet various factors contributed to the end of her career without much success beyond this. Truly unfortunate. We rarely see this level of talent, even today.
She kind of reminds me of a cross between Michelle Kwan and Angela Nikodinov. A grace similar to Kwan, but with the surety of landings and quickness in steps like Nikodinov in her prime.
I will never not be obsessed with that final layback position. GORGEOUS!
