Dispersion - The Fourth Ever Pitch Controlled Modulation Effect

  • Dispersion tskes your incoming signal and clips it enough to use its pitch as a clock source for a clock divider. That clock divider then control both the time parameter of a delay and a silencer. So it becomes a pitch controlled lfo (sorta) controlled tremolo & vibrato effect. And of course I added a fuzz as well!

The equivalent of playing guitar through an amplifier made of wobbling sheet metal lol

Synth showcase at the end and the guitar stuff with distortion/fuzz really is where this shines and that feedback button is sick

I had a similar circuit i discussed in the discord a couple of years ago. I sadly haven't been able to finish the project. But the idea was. You take your input signal. Feed at as the modulation signal for a ring mod circuit. But at the same time. Feed the input into 2 op amps. Running rail to rail. One to postive the other to negative. The postive output would be fed into the inverse input of the op amp. So I would get 2 rail to rail signals that are 180 degrees out of phase with each other. This is the carrier signal for the ring mod, which would have the product of all that being a double side band surpresed carrier signal at the output. I need to finish that project. But the whole reason for coming up with it is because i remember hearing a ring mod just sing and harmonize when the lfo and carrier are at the same frequency. I wanted to have that all the time. No need to tune the lfo, you are the lfo and carrier.

Love it! That would also be a cool idea to do with a filter type because I just love when that resonance becomes harmonic and voice-like.

great idea! wonder, how a human voice sounds through it. would be great if you add examples with voice through your pedals.
maybe i just should try to kinda recreate it with my modular so and try it with my voice :)

I can totally start doing voice through in these type of release videos! I never really know what to do honestly since I'm kinda bad at just demoing something, haha. So thanks for the tip. Wish I had though of it sooner!

This is very cool. I've done this before or something like it on my semi-modular synth, but it's really cool to have it all in one pedal.

ciat lonbarde did several instruments building on this kind of thing buy using amplitude not pitch but using it on two mono filters set as a stereo pair.
I loved that sound, super pumped you've rolled along with something like that!!

As a guitarist and a songwriter myself I have always had an interest in Audio Electronics and over the years I have designed and built everything from optical tremolos to talk boxes, wah wah pedals to infinite sustainers and tube boost pedals to loopers. I’m always drawn towards the ethereal and bizarre, opting to create a wall of sonic sorcery, bending sound and effects to my will. Which is precisely why I love your channel. We are very much alike. We are mad scientists of acoustic malady.

hey mister... i've done some mainVCO->clock div->slew/etc->VCF/FX mod input patches in euro/virtual ... and i think this is maybe the best self-contained pedal implementation of that kind of weirdness that i've ever seen. i'm more of a "force Regular pedals/modules to act weird together" type of person, and i don't have any visual designs more far-out than EHX's. but i think i really want to get this!!!
it's like intellectually i understand how it works and could probably build something like it myself, but you have done the harder wok of turning it into something i will want to interact with as a Musician again and again.

Perhaps a bit less extreme, but it might be fun to make an "InPhaser" - use the same frequency division and clipping to generate square waves - but generate both one and two octaves below the input - then feed the single-octave-down into the rate (or alternately/switchably, the sweep depth?) of a phaser, with the two-octave-down providing a mute-gate as you have here. A similar idea using a flanger could also be fun 🙂

2 of these in series would be cool, except maybe only fuzz on 1 of them. Or maybe a low tone fuzz on 1, and a higher tone... this isn't my favorite fuzz from what I hear so far, anyway. I think it's more papery or crinkly or spitty, whatever you want to call that, than I like. Maybe it's a me issue - I think I usually like to stack lower gains more than using 1 nuclear option fuzz. I have a Malekko b.Assmaster but I hardly plug it in.

I like the rest of the pedal, and I like stacking delay/slicer/vibrato fx, and pitch shifters. That's why I thought 2 in a row could be fun. Still not my fuzz tone, but I'll keep an ear out for other pedal releases.
