I was a Highland Dancer - but not a very good one! It gave me stage fright. There was a show called the Kilt is Our Delight, where many Invernessians gave their all for the tourists, including briefly me. My father sang there at these outdoor shows, as well as numerous other events. Calum Kennedy's commando course is on 'UA-cam', which gives a flavour of the dying days of Scottish tartan variety shows.
Which original lyrics..? My father wrote it around 1962-3 (first issued in sheet music) - when the BBC TV series 'Dark Island' was on.. David Silver wrote his lyrics also in 1963. No lyrics existed before then, as it was just a tune. My father varied the tune, and didn't fit it to the standard one.

Thanks..Uistman I only have simple software. i cut a middle verse out, as my father overwrote, Which is why in the end, the two verses became the standard structure. Many years too late! I am still mystified as to why some videos get hundreds of thousands of hits and others.... Anyway, there are songs he wrote the whole of that I am putting up, just for the sake of archiving where they came from!
None of the musicians are listed. It would likely have been an English session orchestra. I know that Cyril Stapleton recorded Calum later, so it may have been his orchestra, as he did record session music of various genres.

Her name was Di Boyd - she was a legend too and accompanied many of our great singers.... and I'm from Benbecula stock so it is always music that is dear to me. Awa and bile yer heid......
PS - have now been pointed in the right direction and find that it was not my mother after all - she was the pianist on David Solley's version. Another legend.

Lovely song, shame that is ruined by the words being quietly shouted nasally rather than sang. Sounds like the song being sung in a pub on a karaoake. Calum Kennedy was never a good singer but became popular as an STV filler for tv shows. He tried to compete with Kenneth MacKellar, Andy Stewart and Alisdaire Gillies but never made the mark. To be fair he did have followers but so did Fran & Anna, Sydney Devine & Lena Martell.
I've heard my father's lyrical version sung far better.. but people rave about Calum. He was a rogue in many ways I won't go into. He also ruined the opening line by singing "years long ago" instead of "years long gone by".. which wrecks the scansion. In his heyday 60's-70's he did sell Gold Discs.. but went out of fashion.
I agree, my father sang it well as no doubt your father did too and sang it as it should be sung. I raise a glass to to you and to our fathers who had proper taste in song.@@alanross2949
