    Really fun game, main channel material IMO.
    Spoiler: BUT, after everything, I think it was a dishonorable move to try anything at the end there. Do you disagree? After all the pretty explicit signaling, I just don't see it any other way, if you actually try to win after being as clear as you can be that you'll willingly take second. To me, at that point it goes outside competitiveness and becomes just a generally dishonorable thing to do. I know you've been upset at other players for comparable moves before, in competition at least. Do you see this differently?

    • @FreePete
      @FreePete  Місяць тому +23

      RE honour, I do disagree.
      I am amoral about the game itself. Honour is not a box that exists conceptually here other than cheating. If it's cheating, then it's dishonourable those are equivalent. If I can play to win without cheating I will and furthermore my opponents should expect me to do so.
      You or I or anyone can disagree about how the rules 'should be' but we cannot get an ought from an is.
      And in the world that is, according to these rules we know what cheating is and what it isn't.
      "To me, at that point it goes outside competitiveness and becomes just a generally dishonorable thing to do."
      I would also like to say that your opinion here is the majority one. Most people think this way. It seems to me to be a difference between the competitive mindset and everyone else. I read a book called Playing to Win and the author called this the Scrub mentality. I personally think it's useful to fully understand the rules of whatever game I'm playing and play to my outs effectively. The big difference in competition v anonymous ranked is I am forming a relationship with people I may have to work with again. In that context betrayal (honourable or not) is a bad long term strategy because why would I want to teach people not to work with me again in the future?
      Great question! I love talking about this every time it comes up.

      @@FreePete I understand your point of view. I'll spare you having to read too long of a wall of text and resist the temptation to broaden the scope of the discussion, mainly because I'm too lazy to put enough effort into a YT comment debate to express any substantial point adequately, lol. I know you have a philosophical education and have plenty of thoughtful things to say, but I'm sure you're not too keen on wasting your time here either.
      I will note, though, that oftentimes it's cheaters, even at the elite level of sports, for example - and videogames as well, I'm sure - who exemplify the ultra-competitive mindset at its peak. I'm sure you've heard the saying "if you're not cheating you're not trying". I've heard it from world champions and Olympic level athletes who fully meant it! If you take competitiveness as the ultimate principle, discarding concepts like honor, among others, as mere weakness or suboptimal strategy where there's not an obvious strategic benefit - well, it certainly gets you all kinds of interesting places, whether in lesser games or in the game of Life, but again, to say anything meaningful we'd have to broaden the argument.
      I think the essential difference is whether one brings a sort of meta-principle of honor into competition or not (whether you adhere to any such guiding principle in the first place is another question).
      My point is, competitiveness, taken far enough, easily loses respect for things like "rules" - which is still an honor system you're adhering to, at the end of the day, only a less meta one, right? I think you're correct that most people just aren't competitive enough - and you'd probably agree that this difference finds expression in every facet of our activities on Earth! Anyway, if you read this far, cheers, I appreciate the reply and explanation!

      What a game! quite the roller coaster, and yes blue and yellow absolutely tasted it. The action was kind of happening elsewhere, if white hadn't stepped it could have been a more interesting end game but likely a longer game.
