Around my community, pine straw is hated! But, as you demonstrated, it can be quite lovely! I gather rejected pine straw from the curb and Hello Fall! Looks great with pumpkins.
Its the opposite with our area. Some HOA communities wont even allow wood or synthetic mulch. The only option is pine straw. I dont live in an HOA, but most of my neighbors use pine straw
Nice video. With enough practice you can get a great edge with a blower. The trick is walking over the rolled edges. Nice clean edges that stay in place.
one way lawn service There are multiple reasons. It helps retain moisture by providing a barrier between the sun and soil. It helps control weeks. It looks nice!
Pro tip is never use the stand & shake method, but on your knees. (Start from back of bed and move backward) leaving no ground uncovered. Also great tip on the rolling, I don't see many people do it where I am from, but that's what I was taught to do. Icall it the Fluff and tuck. Nice flower beds!
TightWadRepairs well if effeciancy is your goal, and looking for a neat look, I think it's the best and fastest way. It's so much work to keep on walking back and forth, why not just break the bail in the flower bed, grab what you need, and work as you go!
Thank you for the video. I just started laying pine straw for the first time. I've always used mulch but wanted to start using a more natural product and that possibly deters weeds better. Would you say this is the case? Also does pine straw attract more critters such as snakes? Ty!
Andres Mejia I agree. Using a blower is an easy way to get similar results. I prefer the hand rolled look but I do mention using a blower in the video. You won't see any landscapers take the time to hand roll though.
Great vid - thanks!! i have a bunch of leaves in my beds....do I need to remove them before laying pinestraw? also, do i need to lay weed control fabric? thanks so much :)
Dean Trejo I lay the straw on top of the leaves. It will provide additional weed protection. I use landscape fabric sometimes but other people don’t like it. You really have to maintain it or it can cause problems.
TheGloryRS I don't buy a specific brand. I just by the cloth ones that are coated on the palm and fingers whenever I find them on sale. I prefer them because they aren't thick and you still have some feeling.
leeluv96 I have the same problem in beds away from my house. They do make a glue like substance that is supposed to hold it together but I haven’t tried it.
Jessica Arnecke I would suggest calling a local plant nursery to ask if they sell long needle or long leaf Pinestraw. Im sad that my local supplier just closed.
Thank you TightWadDiy! I have been stressing all day as to how to roll my long needle pine straw! I wanted to buy the correct blower with the right amount of mph or whatever! I knew there was an easy inexpensive way to do it! I'm so glad I found you! Great video! Thank you!
Very helpful video! This might be a dumb question, but would it be okay to lay pine straw over cypress mulch already in my beds? I'm thinking of transitioning to pine needles but wasn't sure if I should go to the trouble of removing existing mulch.
This was an excellent video...
Reist Mummau Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to leave a kind comment. Be sure to subscribe!
Thanks - I appreciate your knowledge and that you share it.
My pleasure!
I was about to waste a lot of time taking an old thin layer of pine needles out.👍
Yes! Leave those there! They make a great weed barrier.
Thanks so much for this Video. 🙂
You helped me so much.
No one ever said what to do with the existing Pine straw.
You are welcome!
Thank you so much buddy! Your voice is very soothing, like a good teacher!
Cardion Don You are welcome. Thank you for the compliment. I am actually a teacher by trade!
@@TightWadDIY That's a beautiful neighborhood. What region is that in, the South East or Mid-Atlantic?
**Drops Straw Bale**
Straw Bale: Aight, well imma head out.
Thanks! I can't wait to try this.
Hope you like it!
This is so informative. So glad I've come across your videos!! Thank you!
MsMimiMarie12 I’m glad you found it helpful. Thank you for the kind comment.
This was so helpful. Why bother having a company come out to do this when I can do it myself
Exactly!
Around my community, pine straw is hated! But, as you demonstrated, it can be quite lovely! I gather rejected pine straw from the curb and Hello Fall! Looks great with pumpkins.
Why is it hated? It’s very popular in the southeast.
Its the opposite with our area. Some HOA communities wont even allow wood or synthetic mulch. The only option is pine straw. I dont live in an HOA, but most of my neighbors use pine straw
Thank you so much - that was very helpful!
You’re welcome!

Agreed! The blowers a back saver too.
I heard only rich people use pine straw. Are you rich?
No sir.
Thanks!
Nice vid can you please explain to me the purpose of laying pine straw on flowers beds ? Thanks.

oh perfectly perfect and easy to follow thank you!

living epistle Interesting. I’ve never seen anyone do it on their knees. Thanks.

TightWadRepairs I'll put it this way, if I was paying someone to lay pine straw at my house and they
Didn't do this, to me they're just lazy 😂😂
best quick vid so far. thanks.
I’m glad you found it helpful.
Very nice. I used the hand-rolled method. It looks so good. Much preferred over the others. Thanks so much!
alsaxon It definitely looks the best. Sometimes I get lazy and use the blower though.
Good content, but this was almost unwatchable due to the wind buffeting noise.
Yeah. Sorry about that. This was one of my first videos.
@@TightWadDIY Understand that! Back in the dark ages of smartphones.
Thank you so much, this video was very helpful.
Have you tried using a blower to roll the edges?
I have and I do that sometimes also when I don’t feel like getting down on the ground!. I don’t think it rolls as well as a hand roll though.
How much mulch to use for what you covered?
Thanks bro, i needed your teachings sensei.
Its Lord Z Baby Always happy to help.

I prefer it to mulch and think it does a better job deterring weeds. I’m not sure which is better for critters.
@@TightWadDIY thank you!!
The edge is ever more easy with a blower

I was going to pay someone to do this, but now I feel comfortable doing it on my own. He's pretty easy on the eyes as well. 🙂
Thanks! It’s not a fun job but it’s not difficult.
Thanks for the info!!
My pleasure.
Thank you for sharing this great information
Also breaking it up takes it a long way. Never wastful
Subbed! great channel sir!

thanks brother what kind of gloves do you use
TheGloryRS I don't buy a specific brand. I just by the cloth ones that are coated on the palm and fingers whenever I find them on sale. I prefer them because they aren't thick and you still have some feeling.
TightWadRepairs Yeah I need some padding sometimes I get stabbed through the gloves
TheGloryRS The rubber coats cloth gloves do help with the pine needle stabbing issue.
Didn’t even know this existed this is pretty dope
Thanks.
In Detroit we get pretty wicked storms. How can I keep my product In place?
leeluv96 I have the same problem in beds away from my house. They do make a glue like substance that is supposed to hold it together but I haven’t tried it.
That’s way to slow
Where can I order this..Living in Austin Tx?

Great advice !!

Leialoha Garber I do still use my blower sometimes too when I’m being lazy.
@@TightWadDIY If I had one, I would use it too. But how much power is needed to roll the straw?
What size minimum would I need to use the blower?
Leialoha Garber I’m not sure. I have a Husqvarna 130BT and it works great.

It’s perfectly fine to do that.

Real men don't wear gloves 💪🏾pro tip lol
Rudy Zamarripa Haha! I typically do not either but I try to set a good example in my videos!
People who want to work and take care of their appearance do. not using gloves is not a flex
