  • Take a journey through the magical world of MARY POPPINS -- the Hit Broadway Musical! Gavin Creel, who played "Bert" in MARY POPPINS in London's West End, takes you behind the scenes in this 10-part series to see how the show was created, what it takes to make the show happen every night on stage, and how the magic of MARY POPPINS lives on after each night's final bow.
In the seventh video of the MARY POPPINS Classroom Education Series, we see that Bob Crowley's set design is integral to the theatrical scenic marvel that is MARY POPPINS. Central to the story are the Banks' house and the magical park. Designers and crew explain the daunting task of touring productions -- designing a set that can travel from city to city and still captures the massive scale of the Broadway show.

This show had its world premiere at the Bristol Hippodrome starting with previews from September 15, 2004, before officially opening on September 18 for a limited engagement until November 6. The production then moved to the Prince Edward Theatre on December 15, 2004, making it the only Disney musical to have premiered in the UK. The original house at Cherry Tree Lane filled the whole stage and split into three vertical sections to enable it to move. Once the house was off stage the attic with or without the roof then descended from the space above. One moment the stage was full of set and the next it was almost bare. It was very very impressive but clearly wasn't a set that was going to be possible to tour. Having seen the 2004 original the magic was diluted for me when the touring production brought the pop up house. But Marys first arrival, Step in Time, | Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and the flying with the classic pose can't be forgotten.

@Totallyfairorgans echoing what everyone else has said, nothing can compare to live theatre, not even films

@Totallyfairorgans They cannot release a DVD, because then it would give away the show. proudctiuons only do that when a shows been running for atleast 50 years and its off broadway, so the show doesn't lose any audience!

@Totallyfairorgans because over 20 years maybe they want to do the show again and it much cheaper to buy the DVD than go to the show, so most of the people don't come to the theatre.

wow I had not realised that disneyonbroadway had all this footage from the show. why not release the show on DVD? Theatre producers never seem to do that sadly. anyone explain why please?

Because it’s not general financially viable.
If you release a show on DVD, that you still plan to have on stage, which Disney are with ‘Mary Poppins’ as it tours all over the world - it affects ticket sales. The other thing is, the DVD/download sales for a product like this often don’t match the budget to produce it. If this footage is released, commercially the everyone involved needs to be paid - tbe actors, the lightning designer, the set designer, the composers, the arranger, the orchestrator, the musicians etc. That’s a lot of people to pay vs relatively few sales in comparison to a movie...it just doesn’t make fincial sense.

@@bigred8432 - Plus the fact that the show is a huge disappointment to musical comedy enthusiasts and true Mary Poppins fans. Broadway bit the big one on this disaster but so many have nothing to compare it to since it is Disney and Broadway. True theatre goers are writhing in pain.
These two, Broadway & Disney, should have NEVER crossed venues.

All of that design work, costume and magic and the show still sucked. No one even mentions the body of work by the actors, it is all about the flying, the scenery and special effects. The fact that everyone on stage is weak and upstaged by the flash means nothing to anyone. Face it...Broadway has become Disney on ice and nothing more. This show has no heart or soul which is the basis of its' own story line. Broadway died and Disney is holding the gun.
