They cast him because he's a very talented actor. Plus he's also attractive even though he's not some perfect looking blonde specimen like the book character. I'd rather have him over some plastic looking model actor who can't emote to say their life.
Alex is handsome, but Bella is a very beautiful woman, she plays Taggie to perfection!
