I was a waitress once, not a good one. I tried my best, but undiagnosed ADHD and bipolar made it really hard. But I remember one older guy who had $15-20 bill asked me what my biggest tip was, I told him it was $50 on an engagement party table, he tipped $51 on a $15-20 bill. I think he could tell I wanted nothing more than to make people smile. I also wore cheap colored clip in extensions and I'd give them to little girls who loved my green and pink hair. I loved that job, but had a mental breakdown and had to go into a day treatment at the mental hospital. I feel bad that I had to quit suddenly, but they were so nice about it. that Chili's was such a good environment, kind bosses, fun coworkers, I wish I could have maintained my mental health, because that was some happy memories

Just to add I had two attempts while I worked there, I'm lucky I didn't lose use of my hand after cutting to the bone. I know that it's my fault, I am my own responsibility, and I'm an adult. But I loved being a waitress, especially acting like I don't understand rudeness and meeting it with a smile. IDK I grew up in a bad environment, so being okay during cruelty is easy enough.

I wasn't diagnosed with bipolar, ADHD, and ASD until I was 37 years old. I ran around undiagnosed and unmedicated for over three decades of my life, almost four. I'm sure I've been a massive jerk to people back then, but I try not to beat myself up over it too much. However, getting my diagnoses sure answered a ton of questions I had about why I was the way I was.

Hey friend, i hope life is treating you well nowadays at least, and that you cherish those fun memories you made in the industry! Just wanted to say that I can tell you were a good server by this entire comment. All a "good" server is, is someone who does the job with love. I hope if you have the chance to serve in a good restaurant again when you're in a good place (whenever that is trust me i know the feeling) that you take the opportunity. Take care friend, i know it's not our circus but our monkeys really do get in the way some days don't they?

People, for the love of fucking god. Your servers are human beings with feelings and lives of their own. In America, they live only on the money you give them, they don't make minimum wage like other workers. Please, again, for the love of god, treat them well!

Story 9, the priest that dined and dashed but came back with a lot of people. If I were the manager, I would have sat them, served them as usual and at the same time called the cops for the previous incident. And after that banned him. It would have made the point all the more clear.

@@annika5893 nooooo, confront him in front of everyone. Politely of course, but bring a copy of the receipt and tell him you’re more than happy to add it onto his current tab, but make it very obvious that he owes the restaurant money, and give him the opportunity to make it right.

My mom was always a nightmare to go to restaurants with. She'd find anything to complain about. It was so embarrassing. I really don't know how my dad managed to stay married to her for as long as he did. They're finally divorced and I don't speak to her. Anyway, b/c of her and me just generally wanting to be a decent person, I treat people with kindness when I'm out. If I notice a restaurant closes soon I always ask if it's ok to come in and order. I'll get it to go if I have to. I'll tip more sometimes too. I tip well in general. I've never been a server, but I've worked retail and other customer service jobs. People can be so awful so I try not to be.

same, but with my grandma! She’ll talk like “oh black people are always so nice to me for some reason” like….grandma, you’re a rich white lady. She does this at family lunches at restaurants with my other grandpa right at the table and after the POC waitress leaves. (My grandpa’s a Mexican man)

I used to work at a Turkish bakery and I am not Turkish nor do I speak the language
Only reason why I worked there is cause they were the only ones that took me in and alot of customers were English speakers so I took care of them
One day the bakery was packed I attended this woman that started to speak Turkish and I was like “oh I’m sorry ma’am but I don’t speak Turkish” she immediately started to throw a whole fit she started speaking English screaming “if you’re not Turkish why are you working here” and just having a tantrum
I was already having a bad day and I was in the urge of tears
I just ran to my Turkish coworker to take care of the lady and I’ll take care of the customer she was serving
The new customer was so sweet she saw the whole thing happen with the other lady and she told me “are you ok? Don’t worry you’re doing a great job” she was so nice and was the little highlight of my awful day

about a month ago my manager who is a sweet old 60-ish lady was dealing with a customer, I did not hear what started it but my manager was telling the customer "you're really being a prick" and the customer responded "I don't fucking care", so I as a 6 and a half foot tall giant with a baritone voice puffed out my chest, threw my voice as deep as I can, and said in a loud and firm voice: "It would be in your best interest to shut up there and take the service provided before we have to remove you from the store", man looked like a deer in headlights, shut up and finished his order, I refused to take him at my register because I see how he treats servers

Ooh. People who don't leave after closing piss me off. I worked at a brewery a few years back, and it was a Tuesday night. We closed at 10, but would let people finish their meals/drinks etc. It was 11:30 and a group of dudes were still in the beer garden, smoking. They bought heaps of booze just before closing. I asked them to please finish their drinks and leave because I had to clean up and go home. They laughed and said "It's our Friday night!" I said "That's great for you, but it's actually Tuesday night, I've been here for 12 hours and I want to go home"
    They just stared at me.
Worst part was there was a pub about a 10 minute walk down the road that was still open where they could have continued their party. Fucking jerks.

I work at a grocery store, not a restaurant, but I think my customer from hell story still fits.
context: whenever someone doesn't want the extra couple of coins in their change when they pay with cash, we put those coins on the register next to the card scanner just in case someone ever comes up a couple cents short.
actual story: there's this one customer who always comes in, and he works at another nearby store. what he does is he buys something cheap like a single jug of water, and then gives the cashier a couple of bottle deposit slips (which give you money if you recycle bottles and cans). this already pretty much cuts the price in half, and on top of that, he'll want to pay cash
where this gets interesting is that when he pays cash, he starts by grabbing every last one of the coins I mentioned earlier (which are for people in need), and then pays for the rest with change of his own (which means he's effectively paying with nothing but change, and is also technically stealing from poor people). this man is literally more stingy than Mr. Krabs
if this wasn't bad enough already, he's also extremely creepy to my female colleagues, to the point where they've said they want to run and hide in the break room whenever he shows up. a couple weeks ago, he even asked one of them (who is 16 or 17) if she was married (and this dude is probably in his mid 30s)
this dude comes in almost every day, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day, and it's at the point where next time he harasses an employee, he's getting banned from the store.

I would explicitly state to them if they don't order before 10 minutes is up (because I already told you multiple times the kitchen will be closed) I will be choosing their desserts. Lol old lady came up to the table and basically said because we were all adults and they had a baby in their group they needed us to hurry up. The manager threatened to kick her out but not before my Aunt looks this broad in the face and says. "It's my Nephew's 25th birthday and if you wanna enjoy your next one I would suggest minding your business". She can be a savage sometimes, that was 7 years ago. Good times. 🤣🤣

No 48 would have gotten all the coffee shop employees to go to the wallyworld, and found out what section she worked at, then, while looking directly at her, all would deliberately trash the entire area, and then ban her from the coffee place. Or report her to wallworld corporate as not projecting a good impression of the chain while in uniform, which would get her at least a reprimand. Then still ban her.

Story 11: not in a restaurant but a supermarket, but we had that happen! Customer was a serial waffledong to everyone over everything. Didn't know who he was? (like, for example, you started the previous day and hadn't memorised the regulars yet?), angry looks, sarcastic comments, pointing to his hat (also about 30% of our customers wore stuff advertising various cafes and the like. Less than 5% of those people worked at the places in question.). Offer boxes as you were instructed to in training the previous day? Get an expression like you'd offered to befoul his groceries before he growled "bags". Have the same thing repeat a week later because you're still new?
The a week when you're helping a colleague when he comes in... they weigh two similar but usually different items (think washed potatoes vs earth potatoes). They usually cost different amounts even though they're so similar, since one has more time into it. But "don't you know they cost the same today?! You should know that because *I* put them in the same produce bag". He spent about five minutes yelling at her because his receipt was one line longer and "didn't we know he had to store those for 7 years?!". Nevermind that we were trained to weigh these things separately for stock control.
When he finally sold off the business that meant he frequented our store, the whole place celebrated. He was so disliked that even the parking attendants, who were fairly casual about letting people jump into certain spaces if they knew they weren't restaurants (but also knew they would be quick, and/or the rest of those spots were open). Nope. they saw him coming and would send him to the casual lot.
I learnt he asked about job openings while I was away on a month of holiday. I never saw him again even though he had still been coming in every week or so as a casual customer.

Couple years ago at my first job at Cracker Barrel I worked as a server and most of the time I dealt with pretty difficult people, like most servers, but this one couple made me almost walk out one night. Little context I used to wear this big heart pin on my apron with the trans pride colors and most people would bring it up asking if it's for me or if I was just showing pride when it was June. I would always tell them that it was for myself. Well this one night I was going about my usual business of tending to customers when I got this one couple. It started off pretty normal until it was time to give them their check. When I went to their table to drop it off they had asked me about the pin asking what it meant and if it was for me or for a friend. At first I thought it was going to go the usual way of me saying that the pin is for myself and that I like to be prideful everyday. But no this couple decided to try and get all religious and trying to say "It's just Satan trying to corrupt you!" or something along those lines. They practically kept me at their table as they went on a whole tirade trying to convince me to not be trans. As soon as they got up to leave, after "praying" for me, I went back towards the kitchen shaking in anger and just waited for them to actually leave to start my cleaning duties as I really wanted to just walk out.

If you are like one of the customers described in any of these stories, DO NOT come to my restaurant for any reason. As the AGM, I very firmly believe that the customer is NOT always right. If you come in and act a fool, I'll have you removed by the necessary authorities and will press any and all charges I can possibly shoot for as hard as I possibly can. I'll pay for any attorney or court fees out of my own paycheck. You will not treat my employees this way, ever. If we've made a mistake or something was forgotten, or something isn't what you expected or you just don't like it as much as you thought you would, that's absolutely fine, we'll make it right for you without judgement from us at all. Provided you approach us in the correct manner, and talk with us as if we were human beings too, just like you. If you aren't satisfied with something, we WILL make it right. If you are going to act like an entitled child you'll get NOTHING but a new shiny pair of connected bracelets courtesy of Buffalo's finest.

A lot of these waiters and waitresses are making 3-5$ an hour, if you don't tip them they simply can't pay their bills and have to work 2 extra jobs. They maybe rude just because of their mood. I am not saying that this celebrity wasn't being rude in this story. But I am not gonna judge someone over one bad interactions somebody had with them.

That doesnt excuse you taking your anger and frustration out on an innocent person. If you cant do that then stay home and cook and serve your own food. The most messed up part is these same people would be so upset if someone treated them the way they treat other 😂. Oh the irony of it all makes me hate people.

As someone who works in a restaurant in the USA, we hate it just as much as you there's no reason the employer can't pay them a full wage, but idk if you realize how low it actually is. Most waiters and waitresses make 3-5$ an hour. If you don't tip them which most people don't, that's 120-200 dollars a week full time. That's why most of them work 2-3 jobs. If you're in the US and can't tip when eating out, get fast food. Even 10% is better than nothing.

This is very tangential but I really dislike when people go gluten-free just because it's trendy or the latest fad diet or whatever. First of all, you're denying yourself good food and possibly contributing to an unhealthy relationship with food. (I've been there. It might not feel like a big deal, but eating disorders can really sneak up on you.) And, secondly, the trendiness of gluten-free diets actually can make things worse for folks with celiac or a gluten allergy. Before it was a trend, gluten-free foods were usually made with those sensitivities in mind, so care was taken to avoid cross-contamination and trace amounts. But once it got trendy, the market was flooded with products taking advantage of the trend, which often are made on the same equipment that makes the gluten versions, risking cross-contamination.

Idk if you realize dude, but most waiters and waitresses make 3-5$ an hour, if you can't tip don't eat out they rely on tips to pay the bills and for daycare etc. as someone who works in a restaurant, yes we all think they should just pay waiters and waitresses a full paycheck, but by not tipping the only person you're screwing over is the waiter/waitress. On a 40 hour work week, if they make no tips thats 120-200 dollars a week. That is not doable and why most of them work 2-3 jobs.

No it's not ridiculous, I don't think you've worked in a restaurant. As someone who works in a restaurant we completely agree with you, they absolutely can pay a full wage, but they will not ever give it to you. They make THREE TO FIVE dollars an hour, if you don't tip they can't pay their bills. If you can't tip the only person you hurt is your waiter because the restaurant makes money from your food. If you can't tip them get fast food, or petition the government to make it a law to not have to tip. No one likes tips we don't make the rules.
