Musically Detuning Oscillators is Amazing // OB-X8 Taught Me This Modulation

  • Head to www.squarespac... to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using promo code: RICKYTINEZ // This synth patch tutorial is fairly simple once it click. You need to have that Aha moment and then it'll be a breeze. Essentially, you're setting your oscillator up a fifth (7 semi-tones) and that's where your oscillator will always return to. From there, you can utilize your Mod Envelope to push it up exactly 1 octave! That way when you let go of the keyboard it falls from the musical octave, down to another musical note the fifth. Hope that makes sense! I love exploring synthesis and especially exploring OB-X8 Sounds now that i've had it. Sound design on the OB-X8 is straightforward but always in a sweet spot.

    Very cool patch 😊
    The way I hear it:
When it goes up it is a fifth - and when it goes down, it goes down a fourth (probably the one you were looking for).
So the new note is the same (an octave above and below but the distance/intervals are different.
    Hope that made sense.
    Love your stuff!

Solid point at the end about learning new techniques on focused gear like OB-X8, then bringing that knowledge to more flexible gear like the Peak. That's a big part of why I like the Pro 3, and why I'd like to get a Peak or Hydrasynth... They're so flexible that, whenever I see new gear videos, instead of getting GAS, I can just go try the new ideas on my existing gear. Basically, when new gear comes out, it makes my brain bigger instead of making my wallet smaller.

Peak would be a better solution than a HS. I have had my eye on a PEAK since release but they seem too expensive here.
Had a HS and it just did not play well with my other analogs.
Great routing and FX ran in parallel or series, just the engine that did very little for me.
Sounds too pristine to me. PEAK can sound the same but it gets tamed with that analog filter and nice delay + verb imo.

I've created a patch where osc 2 comes in slowly with filter env an octace up, but only on sustained notes. Short notes (16th) only osc 1 hearable. Apply to any Bach Prelude and fugue, so you have movement only in long (accented= important) notes. Then add glide to taste ;-)

This synth is a bit overpriced for what you get (particularly compared to Polybrute, Summit, or possibly even Prologue) and they could have (should have) put more knob per function on the panel without impacting the ergonomics or evidently all important "classic" design aesthetic. I know OB-X did not have it, but having SEM sweep through VCF type also would have been brilliant. (Missing 2nd set of outs at this price is also just dumb - thank you Summit) None of that changes how great the sounds are one can get out of it; just a missed opportunity for absolute perfection vs. just really great IMHO.

Yea this is an interesting synth. You can get close to it's sound with other synthesizers for sure. Which then makes you ask what am i paying for? Great video/idea. A few years back, I discovered something similar on my Rev2 which I then abused to get a track out of. In my case, I set the oscillators I think a 4th apart instead of a fifth and then I modulated the mix between them with an envelope. So, you can do that one on anything where you can modulate the mixer. In my way, you don't get all the pitches in between the oscillators because you're not actually modulating the frequency, only the mix between two sets of frequencies. It's a different sound with it's own pros and cons, but a similar idea. I believe I used it as the main chord sound for this track.

@@henryhill92 Yes and no. Since you raised it though, the OB-X8 has quite a bright tone and not a lot of heft - both things you can achieve on much cheaper digital synths. Based on the sounds, I’d say there’s a pretty big Emperor’s New Synth factor to this new (and expensive) synth. No reason you can’t make such sounds on an expensive synth, if you want to - but it does seem rather wasteful when you can get the same bright, thin (compared to a lot of other, not inexpensive but not as expensive, analog synths) tones on much cheaper digital units.
