Eh-eh-o eh-o [4x]
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settles around us
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
If you close your eyes
Eh-eh-o eh-o [4x]
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
If you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
Eh-eh-o eh-o [4x]

I mean its about Mount Vevillius Erupting in 79 or 69AD (Can't remember what year i think it was 79?) It was for the Romans like god had just reigned his fury down on them
Honestly, one of my personal favorites as a child, knowing that this was 8 years makes even me, a 17 year old feel, well, old
I'm 16,9

I am, honestly, the same. I remember first hearing this song when my cousin played it on his keyboard, then showed me the music video on youtube. Memories of better times. Still, the future must hold at least some good things, right? PMA!

I love it how this is about Pompeii, but it feels more symbolic for depression and "closing your eyes" sounds more like just killing yourself. Even if I try to take it literally, it sounds more like the fall of Berlin in 1945, or the months fighting in Stalingrad.
this was the deepest thing i ve ever seen
Yes 👍
The one battle in the American revolution
I hate to break it to you but that’s actually not it. It’s takes place in 79AD and it’s about Mount Vesuvius erupting at Pompeii. I would recommend you looking it up

When I was kid I literally used to not have a tv and had a radio and I used to hear my parents arguing and every time this song played I closed my eyes and felt better ❤️
It happens. People arguing is nothing new. I hope you are in a better place physically, mentally and emotionally
I have really bad times, but i can smile through my tears, while listening to this music. ❤
You don’t always have to smile through pain or sadness sometimes you just have to let it out

i had a family in my fourth period reading class in eighth grade. the teacher saved my life more times than i can count on both hands, and i couldn't thank her enough. i knew time was running out when the calendar flipped to the fourth term, and i refused to accept it would end soon. "and the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love." none of us wanted to admit in nine weeks, we'd all be apart. we promised to keep in touch, but we never did. even though we're all only freshmen in high school now and that was only last year, christ i miss it. now, we're all in an honors english class together and, when the teacher is preaching religion and her homophobic ways, we all look at each other and sigh, wishing to go back to all that ended on may 27th, 2021.
"but if you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?"
and how i wish nothing did.
Its 2019...in may...and I'm still here listening to this. This song will never get old!!! ❤

I hate it when he says "close" cos he can't pronounce it, he goes Kluze like some foreign word. Just weird
This is a song that will never get old this song reminds me of my dad we would sing it together when i was little xx
This song is so good and still is alive because even if it is getting a dislike from a rude person, or going through a revolution or pandemic, it still applies, thats what makes it amazing..
Returning to this song in 2021 brings back so much nostalgia of the good days with friends, this one is truly going down in the records as one of the greatest songs of it’s time

Every time I listen to this song it reminds me of memories, literally about anything I did as child and what I still do. Sometimes this song makes me wanna cry, 'cause I miss being a child😢🥺
This is one of the songs that I grew up listening to at a point where I made an emotional connection to music without fully internalizing the lyrics, or even necessarily knowing what the lyrics said. It’s a clever song to straight up sing about Pompeii but in a way that we are still discussing it’s potential symbolism to this day. It was a surreal experience to internalize and feel the lyrics for the first real time today (as I haven’t listened to it in years at this point) while also have that wash of nostalgic comfort flood over me, that feeling which is independent of the lyrics and is just the emotional impact the sound of the song itself still has on me. Anyway if you read this far, have a cookie 🍪
thank you :)
In my high school, they would play music between classes. I remember this song. One time, it accidentally played in the middle of a class instead. In my world history class, I had this awesome teacher who was in class and apparently as soon as he said the word pope, this song randomly played. He was like "God? Is that you?" 😂😂
Yes finally found this song from my childhood again😅

the love is never gone.
Had to come back and listen to this song. When I was younger me and my older brother went on a 10 hour car trip across the country, we were jamming out to songs but it’s always been this song that links back to that memory. I don’t know what is about this song to make it link to that trip but it’s amazing❤️
Why is this giving me that one racecar game vibes... *this is giving me nostalgia to*
Rip to all the people who died on 9/11 this is what the song means when the smoke and all that comes down and through the hills and all that because that's what the meaning is
nope it’s based off the town that a volcano had distroyed
The song is about Pompeii. It's literally in the title but I can see how some of the lyrics can be seen as having something to do with 9/11
Moron. This song is about The Roman City getting erupted by Volcano
i woke up and i was randomly thinking about this song
Aboudi brought me here, great song!
I want this playing at my funeral
This songs doesn't just remind me of the eruption, it also reminds me the tragic attack in 9/11...

You have a Wattpad account, so do I. I'm actually writing something based on what happened in Pompeii, but this one is more like a Disney movie, it's called Geronomio.
when i search this is up it showed a wall falling on a family i was like what hell is this this is so cruel
This song will never get old
Still listening to this song.
This song will always remind me of 9/11 and the many lives that were lost that day. 20 years later but it’s still devastating
It’s not. It’s about Pompeii, if you don’t know what Pompeii is, google it.

This song will never get old :) and I will always love it 😀
I remember when I was 9 and how this was my brother’s favourite song but now he’s in heaven. Today I’m 17 and I’m succeeding through high school. I’d just like point out to spend time with your loved ones because you never know what could happen. I learnt this lesson the hard way.
I want the old times back😭😭😭😭😭
0:48 the iconic part
The fact this song goes with so many different events in history is crazy
9/11
fun fact! the chanting in the back is latin, theyre saying "eheu", or "alas!/oh no!" fitting for a song about the fall of pompeii
I like that this has a plain color background. That makes it easier to read the text.👍🏻
I’ve listened to this song a lot. But, still had to look up “when the walls came tumbling down”
I found it, in the end, by typing in :
"but if you close your eyes"

this came out when the days were golden 🥺
Fo many still wondering what the meaning of this song is, its basically this. Back in A.D. 79 there was the acient roman city of Pompeii which was overlooked by the volcano, Mt. Vesuvius. On October 24, the people of the town were doing their normal buisness when the volcano erupted. There is no word in Latin for volcano and many never seen an eruption to begin with, so they were basically dumbstrucked by the massive cloud of ash coming towards them. After a few hours, many people had left the doopmed city, but alot believed that they could wait it out, but sadly those who remained in the city dies when a pyroclastic flow killed them. Just figured i would let eceryone know. Great song though.
FUTURE GENERATIONS ARE STILL LISTENING TO THIS SONG 😎✌️✨🥺
