Just my opinion but I loved my 03 Fatboy. (I had the anniversary wheels so I can't speak to the wind deflection) but I found myself trying to turn it into a Heritage because I needed to haul stuff around with me. I had a windshield, auxilliary lights, saddle bags, touring style seat. The more I thought about it, the reason I love the Fatboy is the stripped down look. Anyway I had issues with it and the $$ made me look around and I now have a Road King which I LOVE and it fits my purpose perfectly. I still really like the Fatboy and will eventually get another older one to enjoy it for what it was meant to be and give it a home beside my Road King.
I just recently purchased a 1993 FatBoy, I drove it 157 miles to get home. I drove on I25 from Pueblo, CO to Walsenburg, this part of the interstate has VERY gusty winds areas. I never had any issue with the wind, except that I could really feel it. Once I got onto hwy 160, a two lane road, to Alamosa, the trucks passing me did not upset me , although there were a couple that nearly took me off my seat😬 By the way, I am 66 y/o female, my last Harley softail custom was 30 years ago and I have not riden a bike for 28 years!🙂💐
@@lionheart5078 Maybe. It's got a fair amount of torque, so there is a bit of a learning curve, but if you're careful and stick to riding around your neighborhood or in a parking lot until you feel more comfortable, you'll probably be fine. I started on a V Star 1100. I spent about 3 weeks just riding around my neighborhood before I took it out on the road, and was fine. The Fatboy is a little heavier than that, and has a bigger engine 1100 cc vs 1450), but if you respect the bike and don't get too crazy until you're more confident, it's definitely doable.

Your right they are pretty stable. I've been riding my '91 Fatboy for more than 15 years. Only one wind problem riding to work one day in the rain I got into a left turn. The wind caught me directly from the left side midturn. Sat the bike upright and tried to push me off the road.

If the wind is blowing so hard that a solid front wheel makes it dangerous, then you shouldn't be driving ANYTHING in it. Your body and the engine/fuel tank all present a higher crosswind drag coefficient. C(d)*D(r)*1/2V²*A(r) The 17 inch solid rim is 226.8 in² vs the reference area of the rider and fuel tank and engine of 1,296 in². The maximum coefficient of the crosswind would be at 90° to the direction of travel and with a wind velocity more than 30% above the velocity of the motorcycle. For instance: if you're driving 70 mph, the difference of the additional 226 in² will be negligible (but not zero) until a wind of 90 mph blows across your path at 60° to 120° or 240° to 300° from your direction of travel. Personally, I believe the myth was started by Kawasaki as a marketing ploy to sell their 1500cc Vulcan to riders not committed to a brand.

I only need to drive for about 10 minutes to work. Walking is an hours and a half. I was contemplating a 1991 Softail Heritage. Is this a smart idea? The bikes done 51K kms. Genuine, I'm not sure. Is a big bike like this for getting to work a smart idea? Traffic is light due to the time I start and finish so traffic isn't a huge issue. I thought I'd ride it properly on the weekends though I still just wanted it to and from work. Any thoughts?
dude i own a fatboy with the same wheels that are on this 1, i have a 2016 fatboy s and i can tell u that when u get a little bit of a windy day and u get up above 70mph u are going 2 feel it, and the higher u get the worse it gets, 1 of my boys who i ride with a lot says it looks like im in a death rattle about to dump the bike. i live not 2 far from u, so around this time of year, october-late spring you're gonna feel it when u hit the highway and get 2 flow of traffic speed. now as far as u said about the difference in the solid rim to a non solid rim, i just purchased a 2018 street glide and i don't have that problem, also my boy has a road glide and he also doesn't have that problem, my uncle has a 2003 heritage softail, spoke rims, doesn't have that issue. so the wind issue is definitely a real thing, other than that i love my fatboy, have a load of fun on it.
chris smith agree with everything. Also own a fat boy. Friends would say the same, that I look like I’m riding sideways or barley hanging on. Wind is not your friend with those wheels. Nothing some spoke wheels couldn’t fix. Got a 21 inch on the front and 18 in the back 60 spoke each. Not only did it make the bike so much lighter but solved the wind issue. Love my fat boy.
@@Racso88e i can't imagine being lighter, that bike is already light lol. i had my eye on some blacked out spoke rims but when i finally went 2 get them i could only find 1 and not a set so i never got em but i am still considering changing them. have u rode a SG yet?
chris smith if you rode my bike nothing left to the imagination. The wheels, exhaust, floor boards anything that could Be replaced with lighter more functioning parts were replaced. It is considerably lighter and maneuverability much improved. That’s too bad but There is many reputable wheel makers that can make you a very specific bitchen wheel. Those solid ones just had to go. Yes, I have been on some SG that and RG as well (side bar favorite HD ridden as of date, Lowrider S have you experienced it?) feel like completely different animals and Even heavier haha!
@@Racso88e where are u located i might take u up on that offer lol. which fatboy do u have? (i have not rode the lowrider s yet) i must say i am having a shit ton of fun on my sg, makes me feel like im on my sport bike lol, as far as the weight goes u dont really feel it once u get rolling, its only when ure backing it out. the rims i was looking 2 get 4 the fatboy was a great deal i should have jumped on them when i had the chance lol.
chris smith located in, California. My fat boy is a 2009 in denim black. You get the sense of the bigger bike and weight just sitting in it but yes, backing it up requires a bit extra manpower on those SG and RG. But I feel you, I love riding my fat boy. Although it isn’t sport bike i treat it like one. If you ever get the opportunity to ride a lowrider S, I highly recommend it. Your grin will be from ear to ear. Safe riding.
.many people knocking Harleys are jealous or closet envious. Ofcourse they arent for everyone pussies can keep there vespas scooters . They are costly yes...but if you truly love Harleys you find they are totally worth it. Depends on what you like or your riding styles. I in my opinion love them owned six and my next bike will be Harley or first gen Buell from Harley years. My 2015 Nightrod was fun fast and one of my favorites
It is unstable in heavy wind. Particularly in rain. I ride an 02 and Although I love it, it is like 2 frisbees rolling down the highway in heavy wind and rain. Sorry. But mine has the true solid rims. I am a rider of over 45 years. All types and styles. Gusty winds do catch the wheels to where the wheels move with the gusts. But only gets scary in driving winds on 2 lane highway
I know this is a old thread , but just bought a immaculate 02 fat boy .Any idea what the degree angle is ?. Mine is immaculate. But I have had it 4vweeks and don't plan on using it till April 2023
All you folks who "Have never ridden but want to" know this...HARLEY DAVIDSON Motorcycles are BIG motorcycles.ReallyBIG AMERICAN MOTORCYCLES. V-TWINS are basic 1930 tractor technology. Albeit highly refined. They also aren't like anything else.I STRONGLY advise ANY courses, schools,MSF or well, not Track days but there are Still schools for we who have (like me)50 yrs. Of experience on lots of different makes in different circumstances.Above all with Knowledge and Practice comes the real FUNFUNFUNFUN FUN,DAMMIT!! WELCOM.
Depends on the Harely and what your comparing it too. Sportster's at 120lbs heavier then any other bike with a comparable motor size isn't really a massive difference when your talking 450+lbs bikes to begin with. Fat Boy is big and heavy though, 700lbs ready to ride. But a Harley Ultra Glide and a Honda Goldwings are about even in weight and they are about as big as I can think off.
What were the best looking years of the Fatboy in your guys opinions? Maybe also the best balance of reliability and looks? Like 98-07? The new ones....are a little strange looking.
The Terminator bike. Was that 1992? I forget. My preference in the Fatboy is the original grey ghost or the Terminator bike. $7,700 buys this bike today or $20,000 for a 2019.
I bought my 2000 Fatboy with 25k miles on it a few weeks ago for $4300 and it runs like a champ. You will never catch me buying a Harley brand new. It is just a horrible financial decision
Love your videos bro! The internet fuels some really nonsensical beliefs about stuff. Similar to what you was talking about with this fat boy in the wind.
Maybe my eyes are what's kaka but as Sean is riding the handlebars look like they're kaka a little to the right. They just don't look like they're level in proportion to the rest of the bike as it cruises. Don't get me wrong I'm in the market and I would buy this one if I could but I just think it's worth checking out.
Fat Bob pre 2018 or the switch back!! Oh and HD’s aren’t made for tall people! Get the seat taken back 4 inches and up 3 inches so you’d on the bike not in the bike!
Sean, look at 8:41 and you will see why he is a "Big Man." His drive tire was on the white stop line. When he took off, he had little traction, so he "squealed" the right rear tire. Not many men can do that with a truck that has an empty cargo carrying area!!! He needs a truck to carry his ego....
That is so old and false. I used to think the same thing because I listened to people who talked out their butt. I bought my first HD over two years ago. It's a Fatboy just like the one he is riding here. It was such a good bike I ended up buying a Heritage too and while I was there the guy said he was also selling the Sportster that matches it. I bought that too.
Sorry dude, not a personal attack; "yet another" video of handlebars while the guy yaps on endlessly with his opinions. There are just so many of these videos on UA-cam. We the audience want to see the BIKE, not just the handlebars.
Not sure why so many utubers feel the need to "see what she's got" in a rural area. Its not safe. Take it out on the highway. Also, bcuz u forgot ur bible verse you couldnt quote a diff verse besides john 3:16? Tells me u don't spend any serious time reading God's word.

dude i own a fatboy with the same wheels that are on this 1, i have a 2016 fatboy s and i can tell u that when u get a little bit of a windy day and u get up above 70mph u are going 2 feel it, and the higher u get the worse it gets, 1 of my boys who i ride with a lot says it looks like im in a death rattle about to dump the bike. i live not 2 far from u, so around this time of year, october-late spring you're gonna feel it when u hit the highway and get 2 flow of traffic speed. now as far as u said about the difference in the solid rim to a non solid rim, i just purchased a 2018 street glide and i don't have that problem, also my boy has a road glide and he also doesn't have that problem, my uncle has a 2003 heritage softail, spoke rims, doesn't have that issue. so the wind issue is definitely a real thing, other than that i love my fatboy, have a load of fun on it.
chris smith agree with everything.
The wheels, exhaust, floor boards anything that could
Be replaced with lighter more functioning parts were replaced.
Rode metrics for years and saved for my Fatboy. The day I got it was the best feeling ever. Ain’t nothing like an HD in my humble opinion.
How do you feel about this as a first bike?
It's a big heavy bike but they drive nice.It depends on you.
Wouldn’t recommend it as a first bike to learn on but who wouldn’t want one?🤣
He's handlebar steering in the curves ?
turn on mono audio before watching
Terminator 2 bike
Excellent video.
What. Cost the. Bike. Doe. You have. 3wheels
Knows a lot about bikes and riding, but not much about following the posted speeds. All over the road telling us it handles just fine?
Nothing lugs as good as a Harley.
Bricklinsv1970 Like an old airplane or cigar boat I absolutely love HARLEY. Nothing else like em
Got a 1990 still goes well
Not many Grey Ghosts out there. Great bike. Is yours original? I ride a '91, first production year.
solid rims do catch winds, same as the shadow 1100 sabre
I'm pretty sure Harley's engineers considered that.
What were the best looking years of the Fatboy in your guys opinions? Maybe also the best balance of reliability and looks? Like 98-07? The new ones....are a little strange looking.
Mine is a 2003 .I reckon around that time they looked their best.
Plus 2003 has sold crank and Timken bearings.
Bike I learned to ride on was an 04 FATBOY. Fell in love and can’t stop
I might have your old bike.
John Ware no we’ve had this bike since dad bought it in 04. Lol
just funnin. i have an 04
The Terminator bike. Was that 1992? I forget. My preference in the Fatboy is the original grey ghost or the Terminator bike. $7,700 buys this bike today or $20,000 for a 2019.
keechmabreeks Harley releases bikes early. You can buy a 2019 now in 2018... Could be 1992.
I bought my 2000 Fatboy with 25k miles on it a few weeks ago for $4300 and it runs like a champ. You will never catch me buying a Harley brand new. It is just a horrible financial decision
Don't think it could be said better...."horrible financial decision".
A Perdue 4300? Jeez, you guys are lucky. In eu cheapest Fat boy yoi can get starts at 6500. And it will be old as hell and worn.
Beautiful bike
Sorry fat boy came out in 77 I bought a 77 super glide off the show room floor a fat boy was sittin right next to mine.
WE LOVE YOU SEAN!!!
Love your videos bro! The internet fuels some really nonsensical beliefs about stuff. Similar to what you was talking about with this fat boy in the wind.
Ehh not for me. Cool sleds though. Amen Brother
Did Harley ever address the cam tensioner issue? I know a lot of people lost motors because of the crappy tensioners.
Jim Bennett Harley didn't fix it. But an aftermarket company did. Good solution is to ditch the twin can and get an evo or shovelhead.
@@christopherologist and when u get ( the shovel head) ,make sure u carry a shit load of tools. Lol
one channel only.
love the fat boy iv always wanted one but just can't afford one or sadly any Harley
TTJ BigGunner give it time mate. I said the same for years. I just kept working and within a few years I own three.
Used Harley's are cheap and in great shape man! Get one!
I got my 1st one in 89 my age then .48 .I am now on my 3rd ( a fat boy ) at age 81..its never too late.( mind u I still do weights.)
Hey shawn iam casey from crowley and iam a huge fan of harley Davidson now i never had one but it would be fun riding one
It looks like Pennsylvania
Maybe my eyes are what's kaka but as Sean is riding the handlebars look like they're kaka a little to the right. They just don't look like they're level in proportion to the rest of the bike as it cruises. Don't get me wrong I'm in the market and I would buy this one if I could but I just think it's worth checking out.
Fat Bob pre 2018 or the switch back!! Oh and HD’s aren’t made for tall people! Get the seat taken back 4 inches and up 3 inches so you’d on the bike not in the bike!
Hey when you posting more of the eBay bike saga?
Sean, look at 8:41 and you will see why he is a "Big Man." His drive tire was on the white stop line. When he took off, he had little traction, so he "squealed" the right rear tire. Not many men can do that with a truck that has an empty cargo carrying area!!! He needs a truck to carry his ego....
Nope I like the choppers
"Im not a scientists" should be the official motto for the store. 😂
What’s the fix for HD can tensioners?
I prefer the road king. It's hard to beat..
Never like the looks of this bike..I'm sure it's fun to ride and sounds great... Road King for me😁
Harleys are great if you're a certified motorcycle mechanic. Otherwise, prepare to spend your retirement investments paying maintenance costs.
That’s a shame... I guess Japanese bikes for me?
That is so old and false. I used to think the same thing because I listened to people who talked out their butt.
I bought my first HD over two years ago. It's a Fatboy just like the one he is riding here. It was such a good bike I ended up buying a Heritage too and while I was there the guy said he was also selling the Sportster that matches it. I bought that too.
@@Aint_no_senators_son you must be loaded lol
@@Aint_no_senators_son Give'em a couple more years.
@@rkba4923
Horse crap. The Fatboy had 30k on it when I bought it and now it's at 45.
Don't buy into that nonsense.
Isn’t that an 09
It's an 08. I have the same bike and color
burn high beam during the day
Sorry dude, not a personal attack; "yet another" video of handlebars while the guy yaps on endlessly with his opinions. There are just so many of these videos on UA-cam. We the audience want to see the BIKE, not just the handlebars.
Amen
I think HD quit making the fat boy?
not for me . concours.
І немає тих зборів навколо будинків
Fat boy. Evo. The. Best. Sound...... This. Not
Not sure why so many utubers feel the need to "see what she's got" in a rural area. Its not safe. Take it out on the highway. Also, bcuz u forgot ur bible verse you couldnt quote a diff verse besides john 3:16? Tells me u don't spend any serious time reading God's word.
Stfu
now now, be nice, that might have been a woman, and single wheel drive on paint, that tire is going to spin, but like that bike
