In preparation for the 2017 Mississippi River Challenge, I sewed a spray skirt for the canoe. I feel a skirt is a must for a canoe expedition. Follow along as I show you how to make your own. MYOG!

Great video. Thsi was made 5 years ago. How has it held up? Why did you choose 1.9,,silcone rip stopy nyloin? Have you tried other materials? It would be great if you included the materials you used and perhaps where you found them. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for making this video with so much detailed information on the process of making the spray skirt and things you found that worked well. I'm going to attempt to make one of these with a camouflage ripstop nylon for hunting from my canoe and this video explained everything perfectly. I haven't used a sewing machine in over 20 years so this should be interesting. Greetings from Satellite Beach, Florida.

When sewing the ripstop, practice a seam on a scrap piece of material. It takes a little getting used to as its weight and feel are very different from other materials. Good luck, it will come out great.

Very informative, was thinking of doing something similar with canvas and neoprene. Video shooting style was really spastic/jerky though.

I've watched your excellent video several times now and played around with prototype spray decks on my self made solo sailing canoe last summer, but with no tight skirt, a mast opening and foredeck battens.
I'm experimenting a bit with some Polyester/PVC material and using the full lacing that's already there.
I appreciate the procedure you demonstrated and will definitely follow your lead.
    Thanks,
    ~M

By first cutting the fabric into a 15' x 44" rectangle I was able to enlarge the leftovers into a useful size scrap, instead of cutting narrow strips off both sides. This allows for 6" extra at each end and 8" extra width for hemming the sides. I've decide to use dome fasteners every 9" instead of velcro so the hem will better support the dome fasteners. Since I'm using PVC instead of nylon, I'm able to glue the hem with HH-66 and avoid most of the sewing. I'll hand stitch the ends and glue PVC reinforcements into them. Instead of a skirt, for now, I'm planning on using a fibreglass sail batten to give a slight arch to the cover just ahead of the single cockpit. Will let you know how it turns out.

Would be nice to have the fabric details listed somewhere

What about using the self adhesive and stick the Velcro on the fabric first, then cut, then sew. Would that work out more easily for a experienced yet novice seamstress?

That sounds like a fantastic idea.

@@TimMuhichOutdoors the one drawback that just crossed my mind is that the adhesive may gunk up the sewing machine needle. Try a sample piece first perhaps?

I imagine the self adhesive Velcro would peel right off in the heat of the sun. Did you run into this problem?

A couple of questions for you. I'm contemplating a skirt for my canoe which has a wood outwale. Your aluminum gunwales lie almost flush with the side of the canoe, mine juts out 3/4". Will this design work?
Also, I'm lacing my canoe. If this design will work for me, should the lacing be just under the gunwales, with the Velcro placed below the laces? My initial thought is that, but I've been wrong before, and this is my first canoe. I have no experienced with any of this.
Lastly, what material do you recommend. Yours seems pretty thin. I would like mine to last many seasons as its my only canoe and I don't want to have to do this every season or 2.
Thank you, for this excellent video.

I have not put a skirt on a boat with wooden gunwales, however I do not see why it would not. You would just have to decide where to place your velcro (or other attachment material) so that the force of the tight skirt pulls along the velcro, not pulling it apart. Good luck with your build. They make a ton of difference.

@@TimMuhichOutdoors thank you! Did you decide if the self adhesive Velcro worked well enough? Or do you recommend an after market adhesive? Also, was the 1 inch strip wide enough?

    • @TimMuhichOutdoors
      @TimMuhichOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

@@jonathaneguy I have used both. If you want it to stay on for one long trip, the self adhesive is fine, just make sure you clean the surface really well first. If you want it to last forever, use epoxy.

Is there any particular advantage of this design compared to a spraydeck with round coamings sewn in for individual sprayskirts and covers?

Where did you get your self adhesive velcro? Did you use an industrial grade, or standard?

    • @TimMuhichOutdoors

Garrett Isenhart I got it from Seattle Fabric. It does not need to be extra strong, just make sure the surface is clean and it will hold.

cathlyn205 while trying to go lightweight, I have made the mistake of getting too thin in the past. This ripstop nylon is very waterproof, it’s only drawback is it is not very chafe resistant.

Tim Muhich Outdoors. I am concerned for you. A possible safety issue is getting tangled in the skirt during a capsize.! It seems like three people with the shock cord tightened around themselves and linked by the skirt could get tangled pretty horribly with a possibly fatal result during a capsize. Also, the velcro seems like it could be difficult to disengage during a capsize; and seems like it could trap you because it is too firmly engaged around the canoe. This skirt you've made (while nice) is fundamentally different than a solo person/ kayak style spray skirt and exponentially more dangerous because of those differences.
I'm familiar with the Mississippi and know that it is generally slow and peaceful so that is good, but accidents/ weather/ careless individuals could happen anywhere. I hope your travel companions and yourself are safely home after the challenge, and that you will consider addressing these things before going out like that again.
Otherwise Great video! I've never seen anyone do this before. I like where your going with this idea, its really cool to put a spray skirt on a canoe.

RJ Sparling. Thanks for you concern. We all made out without any problems related to the skirt. Canoe skirts or spray covers have been used for a long time, and are the standard for much expedition canoeing. The skirt is very different from one you will find on a kayak. The Velcro must hold. Many people actually use snaps or clips to hold the skirt on. The skirt stays in place on deck, and you slip out in the event of a capsize. Through tests we have conducted, we find it works very well, and I have never felt any resistance in leaving the boat. For more information, or written instructions read “Expedition Canoeing” by Cliff Jacobson. I highly recommend it. With how well they keep water out preventing swamping, I would not dream of heading any distance from shore or doing any crossings without one. Give canoeing a try. With a good boat and a nice skirt you may find it far more enjoyable than kayaking. Much easier on the body.

Sparling is correct, this is not safe.
In the Ally sprayskirt the part you crawl into loosens during a capsize. Just like in a kayak.
I asked a professional sprayskirt maker once about making a sprayskirt without that, and he downright refused.
