Your experience has been the same as I had, the mini-blowers/vacuums have always left me wanting for more power. For doing small vacuum jobs, I really like the Black and Decker lithium dustbusters, as for replacing canned air, I havent found anything that can direct as much air via a tiny straw like canned air does, but if that isnt a requirement, I really like the Xpower A-2, its pretty compact and puts out a LOT of airflow depending on the nozzle used, as far as I can tell its just a cheaper version of the Datavac blower ($50 vs $100)
