Taking a look at the Gerber Balance, another good example of a minimalist toolset. The pliers, scissors, and 4 drivers are all very useful, the non-locking combo edge blade is the weak point. It has tweezers in a handle scale like a Swiss knife, which is handy. I like this multitool, but I don't necessarily like the current Amazon price, since once you go past $35, there are other better multitools one can get, still overall this is one of Gerber's better executed multitools.

This is no longer in production, this was part of GERBER's "experimental" phase prior to the release of the Diesel. Several of their MT's are no longer in production from that era which is a shame because they made an automatic, they made one that acted as a tripod for your phone to take pics, they even made a mini-suspension! This one looks decent if you work inside doing light duty tasks, or if you use multiple screwdrivers frequently. This one with some upgrades though would have been a winner I think because like you said, from a minimalist POV this looks almost perfect.
Ty for the review. Great job! Don't think I'll get a "Balance" thought. It just doesn't seem like I would use it. (I use almost every tool on my surge several times a week.) Glad for your info. and opinion about it.

One of the best overall values for a multi-tools is the Gerber Suspension for $20 from Home Depot or $27 from Amazon. You can buy it online or in the Store at Home Depot. If you get one. let me know what you think...Abe Azar

I agree on all points! It's cool, but I think I would rather have the Sidekick you showed or even the Juice S2
The non-locking blade does make it good for UK legal carry. As for the knife, I don't think it's a problem really. Most people who carry multi-tools tend to carry some kind of pocket knife as well. Which will be a better knife than you get on a multi-tool anyway.
Nice overview of a tool I picked up a while ago from REI ($20!). I didn't really need it, so it went into a drawer and I forgot about it. Just "found" it recently, and being curious about what others thought... I found your video. After watching it, I'm glad I picked this up, and will (finally) put it into service. Thanks!
Thank you for your thoughts in your video when it comes to this Gerber! I ordered a Leatherman Surge, Juice CS4, Juice S2, and i think it comes later on today. Gerber Balance, I think it looks nice with other color then just plain metallic or black, so nice different touch there.
Gerber should add locks, remove the blade and scissors, add 2 blade exchangers for a perfect minimal but useful companion for a dedicated knife or as a legal stand alone travel tool.

That's an interesting MT that I'd never heard of. With the driver fully extended it looks like a predecessor to the Center Drive. I don't care to have one as it seems to use odd sized (less than 1/4") proprietary bits and I doubt the effectiveness of the pliers.

got a Gerber MT ad before watching a Gerber Mt video.
Major weakness is the fact the tools don't lock in place. Screwdrivers that don't lock are knuckle busters. To me non-locking is a deal breaker. Too bad because it looks like a nice tool.
Are those bits the standard 1/4 inch size? It looks like maybe they are not standard.

WeAllJuggleKnives Seems I missed it. I am currently in the hospital. oh yeah you did day it. must've drifted off. I am very ill. still had my notebook brougt, so I can edit. did 3 English videos since Saturday. 2 of them could be interesting for you too. would mean the world to me if you'd check them out. but remember just a phone to film and notebook to edit. but I think I made the best of it

oh yeah.. these days noboy is watching TV anymore. As you can imagine in the hospital there are older folks but still.. in the evening it's tablets as far as the eye can see. Only a handful are still watching TV. Although only in the common room coz at least in this station they've removed them from the rooms. I had 'em when I was in surgery. But now of course I am full of energy so I am making videos daily. Although of course I only have a finite amount of stuff with me. Right now I am rendering a video about hand spinners. I am quite happy with the outcome. I really enjoy watching videos too here at the hospital.. you have so much time free.....
