  • In this video I review making my new to me Food Plot Grain Drill. This was a 10' John Deere Van Brunt grain drill I decided to cut down and make into a smaller version for getting into food plots. Could easily sell the other side of the grain drill for a good profit.
    I wish I could afford a RTP Genesis 3 or a Woods Super Seeder but not in the cards at the moment. Anyways if you are looking to build a drill I figured I would share.
    Also later in the video talk about my plan and journey after signing up for the National Deer Associations Deer Steward 1 online course. Ultimately my goal would be to go onto the next level, but need to walk before I run.
    Enjoy

    1. Glad to see you’re back.
    2. Love the improv…I can’t afford a no till drill!
    3. I’ve done exactly the same thing for about 5 years. Works great in fall. Summer plots are totally dependent on rain. I call it Faux Till. Hope you get timely rains!

    You can get an AG wheel hub that will fit the trailer spindles if you want to use the AG wheel.
    Your drill has the lift mechanism that runs by the ground drive, which is what you want for a side x side. The JD drills as an option can come instead with a long lever handle to raise the row units, or a hydraulic cylinder for same, which are fine with a tractor, but not with a SxS.

    Nice project. I built the same unit from my old JD Van Brunt and it works great. It was missing a few cups and disks so I had to consolidate parts to one five and a half foot drill, moving the left axle and tire in. I now have one useable drill with stored spare parts.
    You’ll find this unit gives you excellent seed distribution so you don’t waste valuable seed with correct depth for quick germination. Seed rate calibration is still critical. Also critical to vacuum seed out after every use! You’ll be amazed out quickly seed sprouts and plugs your unit. Drip some diesel on seed gears at end of season for preservation.
    Good luck. Dave.

      Awesome Dave and thank you for the tips! I’m excited to see how it works but and the germination rates. Best of luck this year and thanks again for the storage and diesel tip!

    It's nice to finally understand how these machines get split. Just yesterday I wondered why I hadn't seen a new video of yours in a while. Thought maybe I had missed a few lately. Sometimes other priorities take over and the next thing you know, a couple months have gone by since the last video. It happens. Glad to see you plan to keep some new ones coming.

      Thanks for the kind comments Brett. Yeah life just got crazy this winter. Although my boys are young we signed them up for some winter sports and next thing ya know months went by. Hoping to get back on track! Hope all is well and thanks for watching!

    Good job on the planter. I’m looking to make one around 5-6 feet wide for hidey hole plots. NDA Deer Steward course is a really great program. I completed it two years ago. Well worth the time and money. Actually from what I learned it has saved my time and money while improving my food plots.

    It will work. We overseeded about 15 acres of pasture last 2 years that is covered in grass and is heavy clay soil. We had a great stand of winter wheat for grazing

    A drill is my ultimate goal, food plot tool wise, but pretty sure I'll end up buying.
    Great job though and looking forward to the follow-up.

    I did the same project last year. Mine was a steel wheel IH that I cut down to 5 feet. I had already taken small seed box off for a roller seeder years ago so I just mixed everything into the grain box and it worked just fine. Forgot to raise it turning around and was surprised to see plants coming up even on the hard clay 4 wheeler trail. Plan to make a 2 row corn/bean planter out of left over parts from other half.

      Nice! I plan on just mixing everything in the large box as well. Best of luck this year!

    I use a chinese seeder not a no till, I just wait for some rain to soften the ground and don't till the ground. Seems to work ok.

    I will be splitting a case drill this summer curious if an issue arrises if your dummy tire from dust cap to top of tred is different from drive tire will cause issues? Basically tires need to have exact height?

    • @LoinFarmer
      @LoinFarmer  2 роки тому

      I think you want to try and get as close as you can but if it’s .5 to 3/4” in different I don’t think it’ll make a difference. The row units ride in spring which adjust essentially to the ground height. Hope that makes scenes

      @@LoinFarmer yes think so, spreaders are pressure sensitive so they should basically equalize through out the drill

    I don’t understand why not make both sides a drive wheel you have the parts on the other half so that way you have two drive wheel ?

    • @LoinFarmer
      @LoinFarmer  2 роки тому

      Brent if I pulled the drive wheel off the other unit that unit would be left with no wheels on it. That’s why if you want to make 2 drills out of one, you’ll have to make a follow wheel
