The Giff are definitely my favorite in the set, especially the armored one, but I've always been partial to great swords. Fun lore fact: the Fyr actually started out as a Ravenloft creature, they developed in city sewers feeding off the nightmares of the population until large enough to hunt their prey by night
Thanks to dragon shield for your sponsorship! You look like you have an awesome product, and you can't do better than advertise your products through the Gallant Goblin! I try to let you guys know that the audience here does notice the supporters of this channel and we do buy the products that are so lovingly and professionally displayed by both Grady and Theo!
The Gaj brings back memories of the first time I read The Verdant Passage, chapter 1 was the scariest shhhhiiiiii...... reading what the Gaj did to Rikus. I'm glad it finally has a mini, and shocked they actually made a Braxat 🙌 When is the straight up Dark Sun set coming? With a Premium Borys Dragon figurine blowing out a cone of hot sand for $300? I'd buy it 🙏
Great review as usual Theo. The Spelljammer release could definitely have done with more content, even sacrificing a lot of the ship info for more lore. That said, I loved the three book setup and hope to see more of it later. Also, why on Earth are we getting *three* Prince Xendil miniatures…
I got both the awesome new Dragon Shield products. They are awesome. Im from Norway and I immediately brought them on one of the 3 national games/ hobby sites which is packed with D&D, P.F and even US candy! Got to try Twinkies of all things! The G.M/P.C boxes Kiinda make the D&D class folie and token class set boxes obselete. Or not really, the first have room for 10 char.sheets and the token box can hold misc items, dices and well the tokens. BTW there is possible to order Dragon Shield game master screens too, shorter but taller? Anyway. Im not much of a D.M BUT I use the G.M box to store all my minis. Not enough though * cough*
That’s awesome! As far as I know they don’t offer the GM screens separately, but we’ll try to stay on top of their new TTRPG products! Hehe, as for US candy, I think you can do better than Twinkies! 😂 -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblinGreat too hear! Will you cover the new Copper and Topaz adult dragons too as a headsup or after release? Blame Zombieland, poor Talahassee ( Woody Harrlesson ) only ONE Twinkie survived in the movie 😆 I had to try Twinkie ONCE at least with dark coffee to compensate!
I’m so keen on all of these, hopefully they add some more Spelljammer PCs to the Nolzur’s line too. I hope Spelljammer does well enough to get some more for it.
I also imagine the Gaj uses its mind probing ability to get information useful to itself, like maybe finding out where it can find more prey, as Gaj are somewhat intelligent
I hope we see more Spelljammer too! The OG Spelljammer releases beyond the original box set really fleshed out some of the issues and lacking bits in the old stuff. These minis are pretty cool.
The Giant Space Hamster, The Ulithiarid, B'rohg & Beholder are no doubt the best. Too few in there to use in regular campaigns to justify getting a brick. Maybe shake a box or 2 and see if there is a dense heavy one for the hamster or beholder.
Thanks again for another great video! From the humor to the minis themselves Theo and Grady y'all killed it! Trav is loving the spelljammer set and possibly likes this set more then I do the fizbans set! Hope all is well and catch y'all in the discord
I wish the Reigar were detailed more in the 5E book, and we had gotten more minis of them. See, in 2E they are ridiculously powerful, piloting sentient ships they created (that exists in 5E too and is in the Ship Scale sets), and using what is basically a Wonderous Figurine (they call it Shakti) which works as a weapon, a flying animal and built-in space armor. If that's not enough, they also have Helots - who are basically identical but golem-like clones of that specific Reigar, and also have adopted a green-haired Human-like amazon race called the Lakshu who fight for them in return for their own personalized Shaktis and Helot clones. So I can kinda get why this mini is a Common, so you can use the rest as Helot clones of him. :)
Great review Theo. Love the genuine excitement you guys show in your videos. These full set reviews are also amazing inspiration for future encounters I'd like to run. Question though; I thought this set would include a flying version of the elderbrain dragon, is this one still coming? Would like to pick that one up as it's going to be the BBEG in my homegame ;) If not then I'll pick up the grounded version instead. Cheers!
The flying pose Elder Brain Dragon was one I was looking forward to as well, but I think it’s in Ship Scale from the look so that might not suit your needs. I have the landed one but hope the other still comes out, my idea was to use the Ship Scale fighting a ship then have it land on the ship, so using both minis on both scales. There was also a Ship Scale Kindori shown that’s not in any of the preorder sets. Hopefully these are just delayed and will come out later.
I contacted Wizkids about it. The flying elder brain was delayed from this set and they don’t have anything to announce about it at the moment. 🤷🏻♂️ I wonder if it might be upscaled and added to the adult dragon line. -Theo
Thankyou so much for getting that info. I hope it and the Ship Scale Kindori, which they heavily lent into as a big part of the Spelljammer Aesthetic, will still come out in a future Ship Scale Set. I definitely still want a Ship Scale Flying Elder Brain Dragon, it’s an excellent Big Bad for a ship encounter boss fight. Upscaled would be cool too, though I love my current landed pose one, definitely a favourite miniature in my collection. Perhaps the flying pose in normal scale might be a great Nolzur’s unpainted version? I’d definitely buy that, or prepainted. I’m hoping that the Ship Scale range is successful, I’d love to see more in that including more Dragons, big space monsters (like the Asteroid Spider from the free monsters digital release or a Space Kraken such as mentioned in the book), terrain, and unpainted individual release of the most popular ships. The classic design Nautiloid and the smaller version Nautiloid from the Frost Maiden adventure might be excellent additions (though the latter would need stats) and 2nd edition has a lot of great ships they could still add with digital release stats or be in an expansion book.
"They don't ea people, they just eat brains" very funny! Now i eed an eye monger and a murder planet. Plus the gnome and the giant space hamster is a girl-player magnet. Great review.
Love the Dohwar, and funnily, they even pre-date Ferengi as the 2E book came out before TNG took Ferengi into the more "comical greedy capitalist" direction from trying to take them seriously. I am glad the base set has them at Common rarity and Uncommon with the Space Swine, so you can create a "Deathsquealer" squadron more easily. :) Agreed, wish we had gotten more lore on the Ssurrans. Here is hoping they plan on doing a whole Dark Sun book in the future where we can get that. A lot of creatures in the book - and this set - like the Ssurran, Gaj, Braxat, B'rogh come from Dark Sun instead of Spelljammer. Which is a pity, as the old 2E Spelljammer book has soooo many more weird creatures we could have gotten minis of. I did not get why the Hadooze were controversial due to their look... they existed like this in 2E already and nobody minded that. In fact, they were used in a non-D&D space RPG first before taken over to Spelljammer. Granted the lore is brand new and unnecessary - I rather wish they used the 2E lore, where they were a race discovered by the Elves, who soon learned to value them as allies and that led to the race quickly spreading through wildspace as "deck apes", seeing as they are incredibly good as sailors. I wonder if the Murder Comet and the Eyemonger were meant to be Ship Scale minis that ended up in this set? I agree, Commodore Crux is amazing. :D I do hope we get more pre-painted Giff minis maybe in the Premium line so people can use them as their PCs. I love the lore behind the Zodar, that their armor is really exoskeleton, and that they only ever speak 3 times in their lives... so when they do, that is important. Hehe I see what you did there with the "they like to eat people!" bit, but well, both the Braxat and Gaj are from Dark Sun and the point of that setting is that everything wants to eat you. Both creatures are also kinda worse than death fates, as they are intelligent and like to torture their prey a lot before eating, the Gaj especially being a cruel thing because it drains the thought and will to live from its prey... While Braxat are just big bullies that like to prolong suffering as much as their can. I wish we had gotten an Uncommon Giant Space Hamster, maybe with optional Hamster wheel. :D In 2E, they were a decidedly Gnomish creation, and they even had tons of variants like fire-breathing or two-headed versions. Gnome ships often actually were powered by these wheels. :D
Mel was my favourite looked like a teifling rouge that many would design their own pc like so it would likely get the most use out of this set personally other then her I’d like to get my hands on the mind flayer, umber hulk, or neh thalggu as they are or at least look like the typical creatures I use in my campaigns many of these creatures look like they could fit not only in space but also in the feywild or other but overall it is a decent set as some might not see any use even in a spelljammer campaign
There is a Giff box somewhere with 2 more Giff miniatures. Any idea how to get that? I doubt we will see this race released again so I want to get em all.
Hopefully this won't be the only Spelljammer material but who knows I guess. I think part of the problem is that AD&D ended up with lots of books of each setting and perhaps didn't sell as much. Definitely 5E has erred on the side of putting out less books in quantity or depth versus older editions but I suspect that they felt that older editions had too many books.
I will go for them aswell on the aftermarket, it's so sad aswell that they recycled some dark sun monsters giving like 2 sentences random background and in the case of braxat removing the best ability they had in combat (psionic teleporting).
Disappointed by WotC’s products lately-including the lack of lore, as you noticed. Spelljammer without ship-to-ship combat rules, more player-facing content but not DM aides, etc. Fortunately, I’m enjoying your lore and side comments as you go through each mini. Thank you for what you do!
All the ones we review in this video are in the booster boxes/bricks. We have separate videos for the promos and the premium figures who aren't in the booster boxes. -Theo
Gotta agree with you, the official Spelljammer book is really lacking. I recommend reading the 2E original material for lore about the nature of Wildspace, the various races inhabiting it, how travel works, as it is much more detailed. I do hope however that WotC releases some new Spelljammer adventures in the coming years with more creatures, especially because the current bestiary was hijacked in part to include Dark Sun monsters.
Thanks Theo, one thing that stood out to me. Lots of cat hairs in the rotation, or was it thin plastic? It could have been a mixture of both. As for a quality notation, wizkids seems to be backsliding. Those paint jobs are not great. This whole set turned out to be a skip for me.
I believe they are tiny strands of plastic, but it’s hard to be sure. We don’t really notice them until we review the video at the end. They are extremely tiny at you probably wouldn’t notice them in person. -Theo

Why is D&D stingy with the lore? Because whenever they come up with lore, someone on Twitter will fly into some moral panic about how it appropriates or perpetuates or normalizes, etc.
Only when it’s done wrong. They did a good job with Radiant Citadel, and Paizo does a great job with all their lores books as well. I don’t think Wizards is stingy with lore because they’re afraid of criticism. I think they just have their page count and release schedule and probably see a risk in releasing too much. -Theo
@@TheGallantGoblin Well, maybe it's the boomer in me, but doing it wrong sometimes seems to amount to somebody somewhere tossing out the verdict "problematic". Show the struggle against evil ideas, don't simply excise the idea.
Some other companies are going a bit that way too (Games Workshop’s current edition codexes for example). I think they are relying on public Wikis making older lore available to save on their page count.
