I think people forgot Croatia 🇭🇷 actually scored a LOT of points. 547 points is more than what was given too Måneskin, Duncan Lawrence, Netta and Jamala - all winners. This year, their was a very high consentration of points in the top in the both juries and televoting. ”Rim Tim Tagi Dim” was a winner entry, but because the juries points this time were almost all going to Switzerland, it was just outrun. But Baby Lasagna also actually had more jury points (210) than say Måneskin (206).

Well deserved - Rim Tim Tagi Dim is a catchier song than Zitti e buoni. The latter may have more complex lyrics, but it’s not like Eurovision audiences voted for those, at least not for non-English songs. Zitti e buoni was certainly a good winner for San Remo, where everyone understands those lyrics. But musically, the chorus is much more repetitive than Rim Tim Tagi Dim.

The points this year are distorted by the disqualification of the Netherlands - a fact that didn't happen when Maneskin and the other winners you mention participated. Croatia would never have gotten the amount of televote points if the Netherlands had indeed competed in the final. So your analysis that Croatia was more popular than previous winners is wrong, sadly.

@@patboywalton2277 But it was only a comparison of points received. The OG did not mention actual popularity. Anyway, sure, Croatia would take a hit if The Netherlands stayed in. But other artists would have lost points as well. I actually put Joost in the same list as Nemo in terms of sound as Baby Lasagna is a little more straightforward rock. I say he would have given all the stand out acts a stir.

I might sound like a doomer. But my post eurovision depression is replaced by the worry about the future of Eurovision. As a Dutchman it kind of feels like the beginning of the end. At least for my country's participation.
I'm worried whether good and creative artists with a comfortable carreer might look at this year's edition and think: "nah I'll pass." I'm thinking about Marina Satti as an example. I mean, Silvester Belt literally said on twitter his Grand Final performance was traumatizing for him.

Croatia has so much to be proud of here because he gave an amazing show that won the televote and the hearts of people across the world. At the same time I'm super thrilled for Nemo. The code is a beautiful song with so much deep meaning and they are a wonderful ambassador for the contest. I had said going into the final there were about 6 countries I could see winning and would be very deserving of the win. You mean by pure points, which is easier recent years because the voting system changed a lot. The current system has the highest chance to get points yet (still highest points per set plus independet set of jury and public points plus the exponential weight model for favorites plus rest of the world vote) and in the current form (with the rest of the world vote) is only for the second year now. Also, it depends on how many countries are competing (there were years when less than 10 countries competed). E.g., you just can't compare this year with 73 sets of points with a maximum of 876 points (two sets per country plus rest of the world vote) with a year with less than 10 sets (that's why there are winners with less than 20 points). When it comes to percentage of maximum points "Rim Tim Tagi Dim" still made it into the top 50 ("The Code" of course as well) , which is still a big success.

As a portuguese, we just learned a lot from our nearly 60 years of failing Eurovision.
You can’t possibly please everyone’s tastes, might as well send something WE are proud of. Some of the songs we sent over the last 60+ years are an intrinsic part of Portuguese culture, even though they were overlooked at ESC. And the acts some hardcore Eurovision fans might remember doesn’t make us skip a beat.
No shade in that though. It’s our history and our culture that we choose to share, even if people don’t like it and we don’t win is perfectly fine.
Honestly organizing can be a nightmare of it’s own, we’re good skipping that part, even if that means we won’t share Mena with the world again 😂

Italy always does its thing, and Europe rewards it every year. Portugal and Albania also always do their thing, but that’s usually a bit off from the tastes of the rest of Europe. Perhaps we’re just more used to “the Italian thing”, given how omnipresent it is due to opera etc.

@@metalvisionsongcontest7055 yeah like I said, you can’t please everyone 😊

I actually wish more countries would do the same, just send something that culturally represent them to an extent.
I usually appreciate the fact that Italy always sings in Italian, for example. I enjoyed Greece very much for the same reason and the obviously cultural sounds mixing with the more current ones.
I think the diversity of sounds these entries bring, even if they aren’t for everybody’s tastes, are a plus in the contest, but that’s me, not everyone has to feel the same. It’s perfectly fine 😊

Idk if you’ve heard, but Slimane’s voice apparently cracked during jury show performance. I guess Murphy’s law, since by that point vocally he was flawless every single time😥 But nevertheless he was deservedly awarded a lot of pts from both public and televote💙🤍❤️

Slimane was amazing! I‘m one of the very few people who really disliked voila (sorry 🙈) but I loooove slimane! ❤
However.. Jury is not only awarding the voice.. if you objectively (as juries should) for example compare composition, the swiss song is way more diverse and complex or compare the lyrics..
I think if you have to break it down into the different criterias like a jury member you‘ll objectively most likely end up putting the code higher up, no matter if you like the song more or not..
      they judge more „technicalities“..
while the public is there for the „emotional“ voting..
      anyway slimane did great!

    • @santabarbara2105
      @santabarbara2105 20 днів тому +3

I still think Slimane‘s technique is without equal at this contest. It is his voice that makes the song so deeply emotional. Nemo couldn’t make it so valuable like Slimane did. And I liked slimane choreo and outfit more. Regarding Voila you should listen Slimane cover. I not think at my old ages I take all I see that easy. I couldn‘t close my mouth while I watched Slimane. Really entertaining I found croatia, like one who grew up with deep purple, blackmore and gillan for example, pink floyd or metalica. The young ones hardly know good music. Like a grand mother which cried at Gillan screams in seventieths last century, i dont‘t think I should learn something new from you, I heard enough up to now to make a good choice when I listen some music. Slimane was the best and should win. Thanks!

I agree. It wasn't expected that Croatia actually did so well with juries, ahead of so many jury-friendly songs. What i think Croatia's result hurt the most, were two facts. One was that all potential jury-winners were a bit underwhelming in the jury final, so Switzerland really stood out there. Also i do think the solidarity voters, expecially for Israel, took a decent amount of potential points that Croatia could have gotten with peaceful circumstances, because in every single country where Croatia came 2nd or 3rd in the public vote, Israel or Ukraine won it.

In my opinion, dropping the juries in the semi finals is a big factor in the jury - televote discussion. It puts less jury-songs in the final, giving the juries less songs to choose from than the public. The songs with jury appeal that get through to the final make a big jump in the eventual ranking. We've seen that last year with Gustaph and Alika and this year with Iolanda and Nemo. Both Nemo and Loreen didn't win their semi.
So I would say: bring back the juries in the semis. Then the jury vote in the final will probably be a tighter race with several songs at the top, just like the televote.

There's a detail I think a lot of people have forgotten about. I forget when this happened, but didn't the EBU adjust the ranking values so that it was more of an exponential curve instead of a linear system? That's probably what's making the points cluster around the top. What if you used an exponential curve for the televote and a linear one for the juries? That would allow you to keep a 50/50 system on paper, but it gives the public more power through the back door.

@@usertherucanioWe can discuss decisions for days. It ended the way it did. But you can't deny the fact that the song was written by 6 authors. 25-30 top experts from former ESC vacs participated in everything, from singers to as many as 12 members of former ESC juries. When I look at all these data, this song is especially mediocre. You can say as much as you want, but the truth is that the one who wrote and composed completely copied part of the Queen of the Night aria. We are not all illiterate in classical music. And everything is fine as long as the jury is looking at it. But I can't justify myself to the individual judges, not only for the RIM TIM song, but also for some other songs that were not given points, meaning 0 or too low marks... This means that regardless of the value of the song, it falls in people's eyes when you see how much the team worked for a year on that song with people from ESC. What can we expect from the jury but to reward the efforts of their colleagues who, according to them, did a great job. The problem of the jury and their voting has long been questioned. I have been following 45 years and I have seen various illogicalities in their assessment, especially dividing points between myself and individual countries for years. We didn't need to watch the jury because we knew who would vote for whom. The exceptions were the miracle of songs that even the jury could not defeat thanks to the audience.

Helene Fischer going to Eurovision is just the new version of the eternal question, “When are you gonna send Rammstein?” Just like in the UK, these artists will always be afraid that Eurovision will tank their careers.
In reality, it’s the other way round, but this leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy: Famous artists from the Big Five usually only show up to Eurovision once their careers are already in decline (Bonnie Tyler, No Angels, Cascada etc.) - and there’s a reason for that. Then, they get a bad result at Eurovision, and blame the competition for their declining career. When in fact, their declining career predicted their bad result at Eurovision.
I don’t know how long Helene Fischer will be able to maintain her current level of success, given that a lot of the appeal of her shows is based on acrobatics etc. If she goes to Eurovision one day, but at an age when she’s no longer able to pull off such a show, her and Germany will be in for a rude awakening.
Meanwhile, a lot of countries in Eastern Europe see Eurovision as their yearly one-shot opportunity to stand in the spotlight, so they send their *currently* most successful artists. This year’s example is Dons for Latvia, who finally ended their non-qualification streak - even though his success within Latvia is probably in part based on him singing in Latvian. And yet, even in not-quite correct English (“It’s killing me slow”), he was able to appeal to an audience outside of Latvia.

Disagree. If you send a great song, you will be in the final. It’s unfair that a song that is supposed to be 20th with people’s vote, gets their way into the top 10 and the ones that public loves more are mid table cause of some random jury’s personal taste. A handful of people can’t be as important as millions. And to add - malta isnt in the finals because they didn’t deliver a good song for years now let’s be real

I think you don't understand the implications of expanding the jury. If the jury is trying to be objective, they as a collective will nearly always reach the same conclusion as to who was the best (like Switzerland this year). Expanding the jury to 20 people creates an even larger consensus. Nemo would've had 400 points from the jury if the juries were 20 jurors each. It is a good idea on paper, but not in practice, because every juror going against the majority will be drowned out even harder

The thing with jury vs public vote is that the jury gets to rank their top ten and give points to each of them. With the public vote, we have 20 votes, if we can afford them (I always vote once, not more). We obviously vote for our favourite, not our top ten. That means good songs get zero points, because they aren't anyones number one, even if they are in the top 10. I voted for Ireland, but my other favourites were Lithuania, Ukraine, Armenia, the UK, Norway and Estonia and Switzerland. France was ok, so was Slovenia. I strongly disliked Croatia. But my vote went to Ireland. I think, rather than going from 50:50 voting, it would be more interesting to make it possible to vote for a top 10. Now, it's impossible to, even with full 20 points, to vote according to your ranking, and that kinda sucks.
I'm glad Switzerland won, even if it wasn't my favourite song. The song was personal, professional, artistic and catchy. It sucks for Nemo that their win came on the most difficult ESC year ever. They deserved to win because they were the best overall package, not because they were, literally, Switzerland.
I'm from Finland, and although many of us here were upset last year, because we didn't win "because of the jury votes", this year I'm relieved we have the jury. I have faith that if, one day, we have a universally pleasing song, it'll get high scores from both the public and the jury.

They should be applauded. Both the jury and the audience alike. That's the only thing they hit on. I don't like it either, and there were better songs. You are amazed at that, and the audience and the jury have a unique criteria view of that song. I can't help but wonder that in 45.46 years of following the ESC, I've never seen so many 12s unanimously, unilaterally awarded to one song. How to explain the favorite of the day, 58% of bookmakers, no 13% and 1 jury, 5 in televote, and BL 1 audience 3... out of so many juries, he didn't get a single point. That never happened either. One Abba, Logan, Toto did not get so many 12 and they were winners. The best winners from the Eurovision Song Contest. As well as the impossibility of voting, interruption for Croatia by phone and SMS. This should be checked especially Sms from Greece. And why was it interrupted only towards Croatia. Not congested lines but broken lines. Voting suspended. Many are talking about it. One thing is known, the whole world sings it, it's a hit and it will be listened to, sung and danced for a long time, unlike Nema, the only thing you can do is sit like in a theater. You can't sing it. This was proven in Malmö. Even he can't always hit the high note, let alone you who listen to him. The song is not for dancing, so you can't do that either. It means theater and nothing else than a song that is otherwise chaotic and interrupted. Well done to the jury 0 points. That's what it's worth.

I actually really appreciated that both Nebulossa and Olly used their free ticket to the final to push the boundaries with staging. No acts in either performance were explicitly inappropriate, although certainly many found them to be "too much", in part because of the specific genders of the people involved. If you're going to be in the finals as an automatic qualifier, I appreciate being boldly queer and flamboyant with your staging more than playing it safe.
