  • Infant mammals have a problem coping with lactose, so they have to be fed a special animal formula, or soy baby formula, that is low in lactose
I found some baby wild rats abandoned in our compost bin which I'm hand-rearing, and hope to have as tame pets.
I'm going to load some progress videos as they mature, so you can see whether they make good pets or not

Oh, so cute! Rat Babies are the cutest and sweetest available. Rats are wonderful sweet little animals. I get the mother´s feelings when I see rat pups and rats. I love rats, all rats. What kind of you to take care of these poor defenseless rat babies, who presumably have lost their parents.

Thank you for your posting. I fed a litter I found in the compost diluted kefir with butter, they survived 36 hrs. Don't know if they had had the colostrum, still had their umbilical cords. I'm grateful the Lord took them, as chances of them making good pets may not have been good. God bless.

So lovely that you did this! Once they get to about two weeks old, when the eyes open, you can begin weaning. For hand weaning, I would recommend a mix of the animal milk, but also mash up some bread and cat food, blend it all up, and feed for a couple of days, then make a slightly thicker mash, and put this on a flat lid, so the rat can approach and eat it, again, cat food, bread, the milk, then slowly introduce other foods such as fruits, grains and insects, which will build them up.

Of the four rats I retrieved from our compost bin, one died very soon after. Another died about a week or so later. She went off her feeds and urine output dropped off. We found her dead one morning. They tend to guzzle the feeds so quickly, and then fall asleep, I wonder whether some goes in to their lungs.
The other two remain alive and well. You can see them in my more recent videos
I'm not sure which rat is shown in this video. At that age they all looked the same!

I've just found a wild baby rat very similar in size to this one orphaned because next door has been laying bait. I'm going to look for more. I have 1ml with cannula....how much and how often do I feed? I'm using kitten milk as low in lactose. Is there anything better I could be using that I can get from the supermarket?

+Ellaova Feed them at least four to five times a day, more frequently if you can manage.
No more than 1 ml, but they stop suckling when they're full. Don't force feed them or they'll aspirate the liquid into their lungs

I too was just given what I believe is a newborn baby rat, having a hard time getting her to take formula....she barely has any hair but is striving. Just seen a video where the woman was feeding off of a small paintbrush...have to try this next....on the search for a small syringe like shown in the video
