- 6 ALARM INFERNO! MAPLEWOOD, NJ CAUGHT ON CAMERA! EARLY CLOSE UP FOOTAGE! Avalon Apartment complex, under construction Springfield Ave and Boyden Ave Maplewood, NJ 6th Alarm Fire Feb 4th 2017
Hey Ron, I really like your thought process & techniques. Rather then capturing the same old shots, you try to bring on new compositions & reactions to the heat & flames. I really liked your brief shot reflecting off the nearby windows & the communication tower's reaction to the high heat & flames. Throughout the event you continued to look for new angles and unique compositions that separates you from the lookie-loos & phone camera junkies.
I've enjoyed your work for the last few years & will be doing so for years to come. When you film it, I will come. Cheers!
Thank you very much pal, much appreciated!! :)
tornadochaser66 I couldn't agree more with what the comment. It's nice to see more than one angle throughout the video. And one shot showed the adjacent building smoking from the heat, just amazing. You've earned a sub today!
Thanks my friend I really appreciate your kind comments
OUTSTANDING FOOTAGE, OUTSTANDING! THE BEST ONE I THINK OF ALL OF US! GREAT VIDEO! ;o)
Thanks Bro! You have great footage as well my friend! :)
THEMAJESTIRIUM1 I thought I heard your voice towards the end of the video !
Its all a matter of getting the engine and truck companies positioned given the array of power lines that woule block hose streams and the tower ladder when they fall. This is not an easy fire to fight since these guys had to get themselves positioned to make sure this fire can be contained. While it looks like a long time to get water on it any stram of water would steam immediately and only exacerbate the whole operation. Conflagrations are very frustrating to the first arriving units since they too want immediate water on the fire but in this case, lots of water, heavy pipes, and additional alarms of firefighters are needed.
Modern day construction and material. Built to burn fast and hot.
FallAparticle Board
I would have to check into their money situation and investigate with the Police and insurance company.
There is a reason fire sprinklers were invented. But they still should just make buildings out of concrete IMO. They would be much safer from natural disasters and fires.
There wasn't enough water in the Hudson River to put that fire out, but they sure did take their time putting water on it.
tomeejr the power was still on in the lines across the front
Our City Administrator Cesar Correa is from Maplewood, NJ and he couldn't believe the Avalon complex burned. Has any cause been determined?
The radiant heat must have been horrible!
Another great video TC.Why did it take so long to start getting water on the fire, did they have a supply problem?
I believe they may have water problems I though I heard something on the radio about that
Wow these are always crazy fires in these under construction wood buildings. With no sprinkler systems in-built, it's just always going to be a bonfire I reckon. Sad to see this sort of thing happen.
You know people ask me why I live in a camper trailer, this is one of the reasons , other is I got tired of dealing with landlords and the high prices they charge
Elizabeth Cherry ok hillbilly
Just remeber this is a six alarm job. That means each alarm response typically runs 3 engines, 1 or 2 truck companies, Rapid Intervention Teams, 2-3 Chief Officers, and EMS. Mutual aid are struck meaning response times from other townships or fire districts will take longer. These trucks when they arrive must go to a staging area where these pieces will be deployed at the will of the incident commanders (Battalion Chiefs). Still these guys did the best they could do for the major fire they encountered.
Christopher Weir Maybe "Avalon" should be held responsible and pay for the damages?
Amazing how heavily involved the building was when the first units arrived. I am thinking that no one called in an alarm at first.
merci pour tout l'équipe 👍👍👍🔝🔝🔝🔝
de rien
Just Watching this fire from my computer I could feel the heat from this how did this start and is Maplewood in North Jersey. or Central Jersey?
North Jersey not far from Newark NJ GARDEN STATE PARKWAY EXITS 143-141
good old avalon guess they did not learn from edgewater. same thing 2 yrs later, how did that building on left no go up from heat alone? any way great video
Ron, Awesome early close up coverage of this conflagration on a freezing cold night. I didn't realize the school caught fire too until watching your video. I also enjoy reading the comments by the You Tube arm chair fire fighters criticizing different fire department's operations. This was one hell of a fire on a sub freezing night so water problems are common during these type of incidents. I'm now a subscriber of your channel and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. Please stay safe and keep up the good work.
Thsnk you very much Tommy D appreciate you commets!
I don't understand city building codes that allow structures like this to not have firewalls.
gfandwrr1 I
Superb footage. Did you arrive pretty early into the incident?.
Yes, We were in Newark about 10mins away
tornadochaser66 cool
Great Catch!! Beautiful video!!
Thsnk you
Another Avalon fire - wow. Incredible footage.
Thanks pal
Kevin Canessa Jr. hey Avalon, thanks for the bonfire, but we were expecting an apartment building!
Avalon should take up making match heads instead of houses.
Yet ANOTHER apartment under construction burnt down? Jeeez ... what is up with all these fires lately?
It's called money and politics.
Good video 👍👍👍
Merci beaucoup
Damn Ron, you get the best footage. be safe out there.
Thanks Doug, yeah We were in Newark on Bergen St on the initial dispatch, 10mins away!
Do you know how is caught on fire?
As you can tell from my profile icon, I have LE experience. With that said, I have zero clue on firefighting techniques or city planning, so please excuse my ignorance. A couple questions...1) All those wires: doesn't underground wiring make more sense? Or is it cost vs. pros/cons? Also, does underground wiring come with different hazards? 2) At what point do responders consider to let it burn? Obviously it's new construction, and at some point it's a total loss (whether through flame, smoke, or water damage). At what point is the decision made to protect surrounding structures with the amount of resources on scene? 3) In the video it appears to be two separate buildings. This to me suggests arson. I know it does not affect the fight at the time, but thoughts?
Are these guys volunteers? If full time firemen they need more training. It took them at least 7 mins of video to even get one line working then it stopped (perhaps it belonged to another unit? Or perhaps they were just acting as a pump to the high ladder jet unit in which case it took the two teams over 11 mins of video time to get their line on the fire. I think there needs to be an enquiry into the efficiency of these guys or am I missing something? I did note that their supply line went some way down the road and perhaps took some time to get it set up? Likewise they should have been keeping the fire from spreading to adjacent properties as the fire site was a gonner anyway thanks to building standards in US. Sorry guys you did not measure up against your firemen brothers elsewhere or as I say am I missing some technical point somewhere as you are not always aware just watching a video. Must agree with Steve - why did they use their "water" on the main structure which had no chance of survival and concentrate on adjacent buildings which appear to have survived no thanks to the firefighters. The last unit could have been put up the side road to attack the rear of the building to protect the exposures to the rear. They seemed to take a forever becoming involved at all!! Coverage of fire first class tornadochaser66 Keep up the great work filming brave firefighters
You're not kidding . The place would burn to the ground before they got organized
The adjacent building was an empty concrete parking deck. What are you talking about and the first lines were in a courtyard a block away where the fire originated. Let’s see you roll up on this keyboard Fire chief and see how you measure up.
Could they get a few more power lines to have to work around. Damn!
Lucky the power lines didn't fall on those guys.....Wow !!!! They were popping in the beginning, but seemed to be ok after awhile. Glad all the guys (& Gals) are ok. Stay Safe and GREAT Video. (I'll bet it got just a lil bit warm?)
Thanks! yes it was very cold that nite, but the fire definitely keep me toasty!
So this property is owned/managed by the same company that experienced the fire in 2015?
You win, you most likely got the best view, I know for sure that everyone else is at the other end. In all fairness all of you did a wonderful job doing these videos. Each time I see this though is there are so many homeless people that needs a place to live, it just unbelievable it just thanks to God that no one got killed
Thank you very much! They were new construction unoccupied as far as I know!
Wow I leave at the end of summer last year to California and this happens in my home town.
When watching this and other videos like it, it makes me wonder if firemen really do want to put out the fire or not. It’s not like time is a issue or anything and water doesn’t put a fire out.
What cities responded to help Maplewood on this job ?
I'm guessing Irvington , Union , South Orange and possibly the NFD ?
im 6 years late LOL but i was driivng home in maplewood with friends and i saw. Nutley, Newark, Union, South Orange (Always helps Maplewood in tough times) West Orange, Millburn, Middlesex (If im not mistaken) East Orange, Irvington, Elizabeth, Bridgewater (i think) and I think Montclair. There were other departments but i couldnt tell what they were. All in all the whole street was littered with fire trucks parked up on the main street and even near quick chek and side streets.
Nobody thought to protect the wooden power poles in order to prevent the massive jumble of power lines overhead from becoming a massive jumble of power lines on the ground?
Great shot Ronny!
Thanks pal! :)
Your breath sounds like the one from JJ! :-)) Nice on scene inferno video!
Thanks bro
looks really close to a movie scene...but so real....
I didn't recognize this fire at first , but towards the end I sure did , this was just one s!all part of a much , much bigger fire , the Avalon apartment complex , at least a 10 alarm fire with plenty of extras .
There's a couple of other videos of this very fire , it has to be one of the biggest structure fires in history .
It's hard to believe the building codes were so insufficient , a four story all wood construction multi family residence is unheard of anywhere else , where I live it would have to be concrete block walls , pre stressed concrete slab floors and concrete block walls between each apartment unit . This place was made of match sticks waiting for a spark .
awesome video
+Kirk Wilson thanks Kirk
why no lines on the exposure,
Definitely water supply and pressure problems in my opinion.
Surround and watch it burn down.
It's killing me to see the school on fire and they're doing seemingly nothing!!!
It is Not a School and it’s Not on fire!! I believe it was a reflection in the window! It is a county building I believe but the fire never reached it
Is it just me, or did the folks at Avalon not learn a goddammed thing from the Edgewater, NJ fire they had?
Holy fuck thats a big inferno holy shit
Are they just gonna watch it or are they gonna put some water on it?
I have no memory of this. I'm pretty sure I live nearby here.
This is sad. A family of three died in this fire. Did anyone know them personally?
There wasn't any body living in these buildings and no fatalities you must be thinking of another fire
Holy crap! Was anyone hurt??
Hi nice guy, greetings from Munich Germany 😊 This fire is, I think, more like the entrance to hell there! Madre de Dios, what a huge and big fire it was! You also must have feel the heat of this fire on the place you took this video, or? Tell me a little bit about it! For now, I wish you a wonderful day with a lot of this gorgeous and fascinating fire chasing videos and take care of you and stay safe and sound, everydays😊😊😊😊😊💞💞💞💞💞
Thank you Sarah
new buildings mate
Yes sir correct! Unoccupied
holy inferno,batman--that's one heck of a fire there, great footage!!!
Thank you James
tornadochaser66 :)
It must be so hot.
better build a House with Stone and Cement not with Wood!!! and put the powerlines into the ground
23:12 Is That Snow Or Ashes
Embers blowing
If I may ask was this a factory of some kind that fire is really melting that building down to nothing Jesus. I hope no one was Injured of killed.
Apartments new construction unoccupied. No serious injuries
What Caused the fire? Their was a fire in South Jersey Gloucester County In Franklin township Last year Back in July a Lumber Company over 200 Fire fighters fought that fire
so fire
All night wienie roast!
not attempt to hose down the school
It a NJ Transit building not a school! But looks like one though!
I thought it was at first! Lol
It's probably built much better than any school considering it's built with taxpayer money for the state.
Its not a school it a NJ Transit building
still there wasn't much attempt to hose it down
mutual units
Yeah and lots of them to
HOT hot hot thanks for sharing.
Thank you and you're welcome pal
shes goin fast and HOT
The firemen do not seem to be in a hurry. Is not their building that burns down there, so ... They could have stayed at home at the same time, it can also burn without fire brigade. So sad. Nice vid, great! Thump up
By the time they arrived there it was already a lost cause, so what's the rush?
Defensive tactics were their only option at the time.
city dillweeds saved another ashpile
i hope this will happen on my school!
