"What is happening??" Yup, pretty much sums up everyone's reaction to this. I would like to see what you think of the actual stage play (I haven't seen it either and have no idea if it's better) though, but maybe wait a bit until this is not in your head when you watch it!
One of my favourite musicals of all time is actually by a small company production, Starkid, have you heard of them? They started out with a musical parody of Harry Potter, but the best musical they've made to this day (in my opinion) is Twisted, a parody on the great musical Wicked, Disney's Aladdin and Disney itself as a corporation, highly recommend! (beware explicit language)
ending November on a nightmare fueling horror movie. three other recommendations for absolutely beautiful animated musical movies: Prince of Egypt, Last Unicorn, Anastasia
There is a filmed stage version of Cars that is wonderful. This monstrosity almost killed musical movies. Basic plot, Old Deuteronomy chooses to be reborn (9 lives n all that) hence the intros to all the cats😊
Cats is one of those musicals where I've never understood its seemingly universal popularity, it's complete shit IMO. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals are pretty hit or miss for me, although I think Jesus Christ Superstar is pretty great. The real undisputed master of the musical is Stephen Sondheim, who's probably most famous for writing the lyrics for West Side Story and for the music and lyrics for Sweeney Todd, but basically all of his work is worthwhile to some degree. His lyrics are clever without being self-conscious and complex without being complicated, and his music is just so dense and brilliantly layered. As an entry point I'd recommend his musical Into the Woods, but definitely not the completely awful Disney movie adaptation. There's an official recording of the Original Broadway Cast that aired on PBS originally, which you can find for free on UA-cam, and it's just incredible. If you need a palette cleanser after this movie, I highly recommend you check it out.
It's there for the music theatre kids to find their favorite solo and make it their entire personality. Don't have to learn too much plot. A lot of parking it and belting. People don't need to follow along with a story. It's like a Jukebox musical.
I love Cats, but it was absolutely NOT intended to be a film, let alone a film with horrifying CGI 😭 it's simply a kid's book of little poems made into a show of cats talking to the audience, introducing themselves and having fun with amazing songs and dance performances, not this travesty
I saw the stage play and thought that was poor, but then I was forced to endure this drivel. While the original has some great songs, the versions in this movie are poor, so even the music doesn’t redeem it. The best part of the whole experience was the jokes that came after its release. As Ricky Gervais put it, “This is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs.”😂
This musical takes the worst things about poetry and musical theatre and smooshes it together in a pretentious plotless mess. Add some horrible cgi and gestalt human-cat monstrosities, and cast some truly unlikeable performers along with some misplaced legends and heinous attempts at music: Cats!
“It’s a song. Of course it is.” really sums up the whole experience well.

I believe it was based around a book by TS Elliots called Old Possums book os Practical Cats.

I believe there was no talking dialog in the stage musical
I haven't seen the film itself but I've seen three video essays on it.

I wasn't a huge fan of it, but I did do Anastasia on the channel
Cats is my absolute favourite musical and this movie is just horrific. I can’t even enjoy it in a “so bad it’s good” way
Holy molly

Ironically, innefable is when you cannot think of the word for something
More than that, it's when something just exceeds what any words can express

Although I actually like the stage Cats, I agree about Sondheim - we should ask Adam to react to the Broadway version of Into the Woods
