Hate to say it, but when we grew up, we got to make a fort in the hay, but we didn't get to run all over it, because of what you see happening on your stacked hay pile. Breaking up hay bales was a big No No, and a big lesson is it becoming unstable. It will just get worse the pile the longer it gets played on, sorry to be the bad news lady, just experience.
I agree bay bales were off limits. My uncle would get so mad at us if we messy up the hay bales! Sometimes those kids don’t really care about it …. Easy way for them and they are happy they want to play.

If not sure if you know about this but square bales can spontaneously combust when they’re stacked. Unless that hay is aged and super dry, the moisture in the hay creates heat like your compost pile and the whole thing will go up like a match. Your hay needs to be stacked properly with room for air flow and you don’t want to be stacking it under your house unless it’s well aged. Very serious fire hazard!
There seems to be a lot of things that have had to be redone because they weren’t properly planned at the start. It’s an expensive way to do it, and it increases your risk of mistakes being made because so much keeps changing and it doesn’t always get communicated.
Pam here….for all the research they did…there is a lack of knowledge very apparent and they keep getting distracted by ‘shiny’ things. Triple redundancy for heating?? The wood boiler system have been such a nemesis for them…WHY keep that? They had an opportunity to really simplify systems with solar and battery backup. Would have kept walk in cooler/freezer going. Now they are going to have that massive maze of freezers and fridges all over again. I see all these ‘contractors’ coming through and leading them around like a cow with a nose ring…selling them this and selling them that….so much grifting happening and this family is way overspending and over complicating every system and room design. In the end it is so messy, discombobulated and difficult and time consuming to maintain it all. The gal who came and tried to help them ‘organize and downsize’ was even a bit overtaken.
With the hay bales being so loose - be careful letting the kids play in them. They can be crushed or buried by them. For next time have them baled tighter. Plus you are losing alot of good ediable hay for your animals because of the loose bales . Don't knnow much you paid, but as a farmer, every penny counts especially with Christmas coming up.
Well... they are no more real farmers... They are rich content creators and books authors. If you look at that house remodelling and future kitchen, they have no problem to pay for more hay. Still it is a great loss of good animal food and they shouldn't manipulate with it so dangerously.
Is it normal or unavoidable for customer to go back and forth so much on plans or decide things last minute in the build? Is it just part of house building? If I were building a house I would want to firm up as much as possible to avoid delays for the crew. My background is in engineering and I haven't had to build my own house before but it still seems like a lot of crucial decisions are being made on the fly.
You need to stop and consider moisture/condensation management in this house before you progress. You’re setting yourself up to have issues with condensation not being able to escape out of your house, which will cause a lot of issues.
We bought a house that's 93 years old, I had zero insulation in it! Our fuel oil bill monthly was between $800 and $1,000. We added spray foam to the walls, an our heating bills whenever you feel or fuel oil about every 2 months. Last winter was our first winter what the insulation, pretty sure this winter it will have paid for itself. We're in northeast Pennsylvania
We resided our 120 yr. old house . It was insulated with newspaper(we redid it with 2 " foam board & vertical metal). Were in central Wi. it gets -25. Most everyone has 2 heat sources up here we have a inside wood furnace & propane furnace. Thanks, for sharing the reno :)
As fun as it is, those kids are gonna ruin those loose hay bales. You will waste a lot. I was concerned about how loosely baled it was when you first picked it up. We have a very high ceiling with a reverse direction fan. Clockwise for winter and counterclockwise for summer. It circulates your heat on low.

My husband is a contractor and you won’t be disappointed in the spray foam. We haven’t had anyone who regrets having it put in. It’s in and you won’t have to worry about it ever again. Other than good windows, it will be the best money spent on the cool and heat of your home. Costs more upfront, but it will pay for itself in the long run. So, overtime, you come out at the same price with a better quality.
Spray foam: YES!! I'm in the cold north, yes it's an investment but we did spray foam roof and 3" with R-15 batt over on walls. It's a great way to keep the house more thermally stable compared to the outside condition. Cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter!
Hey Justin I would highly recommend spray foaming everything. It's going to help the heating and cooling stay inside and insulating between bedrooms really helps with sound insulation.
I would talk to your HVAC guy about extending what is already a long line set. You will definitely require more refrigerant to charge it properly and you may lose some efficiency.
Homes are struggling to get insured with the spray foam in the uk . It’s damaging the wood (not allowing it to breath) also when and if the roof needs replacing or fixing it’s impossible because it’s all stuck together . I would reconsider, kingspan is a favourite

Definitely think about the mess aspect when deciding where to place the wood stove. I grew up in a tiny cabin and we had to walk across the whole house to feed the fire or clean out ashes. It left us with either wet shoes in the winter walking across the floor, or come in, set the wood down, take shoes off, pick wood up and carry on. On the spray foam topic: it can be good but I’ve known people whom have had issues with moisture getting into the insulation and molding. Sheet insulation you can simply remove and replace. Spray foam required them to tear out all of their walls and completely redo them. I’ve heard too many stories like this to use spray foam myself.

It’s 40 and below from now on the weather says so it’s gonna definitely be a strong one. Difference in northern and southern winters is that you it winter storms are strictly ice. Not to mention they’re usually with odd patterns so the day before it may be 65 degrees and then we get heavy precipitation with single digits the next day. Causing the roads to ice over instead of pack with snow. I come from NH and now live in Tennessee. I’ll take 7 months of winter up north over 7 days of winter down here

I'm sure you already know but anytime you store hay where it's not getting adequate air flow, it may build heat. that's if it wasn't fully dried when baled. Just keep an eye on the temp

Definitely spray foam the ceiling and all exterior walls. We built in 2012 and saw return in 4.5 yrs in electric bills. Over the past two years when Electricity skyrocketed - other house built the same time were paying 2x what we were paying.

Watch Joe from northern seclusion. He has a wood boiler and he understands it and he can explain how it works. Justin doesn’t have a good understanding on how the boiler operates. My guess, the reason is, whenever anything is explained, Justin is so busy interrupting and asking questions that he is not a good listener. Every time they go into the remodel and talk to professionals, everyone is talking at once, just like in this video, nobody is listening. This house won’t be done a year from now.

We spray foamed our house and compared to a coworker with a similar size house and same size family we were saving a significant amount of money on our heating and cooling bill comparatively. Well worth the extra cost up front.
These contractors must have great memories, because things change by the minute yet nothing seems to be written down or recorded. Its just strange that an architect was not hired to map EVERYTHING OUT. Another youtube family is building a custom home for their 11 kids, but from day one the builder had an architect on the team and they had multiple meetings, walks on the property to determine where things would be, and I believe they had a meeting to see the mock - up computer generation of the house with the property. Now I realize Rhodes are working with an existing building, but just perplexed how many changes being made on the fly. I hope the final product comes together with out any problems in terms of design and the actual functioning of the house. These on the fly changes often lead to REDO. Still I wish them the best they have worked incredibly hard to get to this place in their lives.
You are LITERALLY watching a video of the plans being recorded, and I’m sure they have tons of clips that were edited out of the Final Cut that they could easily save and send to the contractors. Problem solved. And they have 5 kids, not 11. This is an inherited family farmhouse that they’ve been living in for years, in relatively the same way it’s been for decades. Now they’re fixing it up to be the way that works for their family. These people have a huge operation going, and they manage it all perfectly well without your comments and I’m sure this renovation will be no different so stop pretending you have all the facts or that they’re not doing their due diligence just because they didn’t share their building plans with you.
hang the heat pump on straps and then pour and then have it on blocks - way less labor but he is right to pout entire back - you will sort out details and get it just the way you like it - try to diy most but of course you need help - it is a work in progress and you can remain flexible - work more with the contractors who do the best work and will work with you
Pam here….my head is spinning from all the ‘complicated’ systems. We just installed solar panels, battery banks going in about another 5months. Keep it simple. Easy. Make more energy that you could use. All the noisy gas powered generators?? Gas takes so much infrastructure to get to you….’if it all goes crazy’ your solar hums along all by its lonesome…with very little human input and energy
I have a vocabulary question 😅 I hear a lot of American homesteaders talk about “redundancy”, but as a Canadian, that word to me means “unnecessary” or “not required”. But, I think the way you use it, you mean it as “back up” for things? So redundancy, maybe meaning not necessary but good if your main sources fail etc. lol it’s been making me scratch my head so had to voice it! 😂
One thing to consider is that spray foam is very very flammable. Especially with the kids playing with hay under the house (there's a reason why it's recommended to keep a hay barn 200 ft from your house), that's something to consider. You should insulate, but rock wool is much less flammable. Also be careful with them playing in it. I know someone who's broken their back from a hay bale. If it's baled and carefully stacked, it's more stable nif it's unbaled and not properly stacked, it's a much higher risk of injury. Yeah, kids should be able to play and learn to analyze risk, but at some point there's some serious injuries possible.
1000% spray foam , we own a contracting company up in Canada. We wouldnt do anything else. It protects your house from rodents too. It makes a massive difference .
Hi Justin I just wanted to ask you a question I'm a country girl that's been involved in baling hay all my life pretty much we were never allowed to bail hay as Loosely as that's been bailed because we were shorting our customers and we would have never gotten paid I don't understand just because you're in a different state why it's okay for that to be bailed so loosely yeah it's great the kids can lift it but you're being shorted hay you're paying for. Your animals will be going through it alot faster and you may not have enough for the winter. I saw someone post about the kids climbing on it and breaking them down. LOL I loved watching them playing on tne hay and ALL my granskids play on the bales ! When they are baled tight like they should be you dont usually have any of that breaking down or at least we dont. Just concerned about the amount of hay you will end up with !! You just might like to talk to them they did do spray foam, but they also did concrete floors so you might just get some heads up on some things that you might need and not need. When I was growing up our neighbour lost a child that got buried in the hay stack. I have never in my life such a mess of a hay stack. I’m sorry but not a good plan to make it into a playground for the kids. Experience is scary

Keeping it Dutch installed a radiant heat fireplace that includes an oven. Or, what about a rocket stove heat source. Both are very efficient according to those that have them
noo dont spray foam. it hides issues causes rot by not allowing the wood to breath. look it up so many roof repair people builders swear against it once its on it doesnt come off so if you need to check for leak locations or anything with the roof care you carnt

Watch Joe from northern seclusion. He has a wood boiler and he understands it and he can explain how it works. Justin doesn’t have a good understanding on how the boiler operates. My guess, the reason is, whenever anything is explained, Justin is so busy interrupting and asking questions that he is not a good listener. Every time they go into the remodel and talk to professionals, everyone is talking at once, just like in this video, nobody is listening. This house won’t be done a year from now.

We spray foamed our house and compared to a coworker with a similar size house and same size family we were saving a significant amount of money on our heating and cooling bill comparatively. Well worth the extra cost up front.
At this point, Josiah will be able to get a job as a heavy machine operator and make great $$$ for it!

These contractors must have great memories, because things change by the minute yet nothing seems to be written down or recorded.
Its just strange that an architect was not hired to map EVERYTHING OUT. Another youtube family is building a custom home for their 11 kids, but from day one the builder had an architect on the team and they had multiple meetings, walks on the property to determine where things would be, and I believe they had a meeting to see the mock - up computer generation of the house with the property.
Now I realize Rhodes are working with an existing building, but just perplexed how many changes being made on the fly.
I hope the final product comes together with out any problems in terms of design and the actual functioning of the house.
These on the fly changes often lead to REDO.
Still I wish them the best they have worked incredibly hard to get to this place in their lives.
You are LITERALLY watching a video of the plans being recorded, and I’m sure they have tons of clips that were edited out of the Final Cut that they could easily save and send to the contractors. Problem solved. And they have 5 kids, not 11. This is an inherited family farmhouse that they’ve been living in for years, in relatively the same way it’s been for decades. Now they’re fixing it up to be the way that works for their family. These people have a huge operation going, and they manage it all perfectly well without your comments and I’m sure this renovation will be no different so stop pretending you have all the facts or that they’re not doing their due diligence just because they didn’t share their building plans with you.

Pam here….my head is spinning from all the ‘complicated’ systems. We just installed solar panels, battery banks going in about another 5months. Keep it simple. Easy. Make more energy that you could use. All the noisy gas powered generators?? Gas takes so much infrastructure to get to you….’if it all goes crazy’ your solar hums along all by its lonesome…with very little human input and energy
I have a vocabulary question 😅 I hear a lot of American homesteaders talk about “redundancy”, but as a Canadian, that word to me means “unnecessary” or “not required”. But, I think the way you use it, you mean it as “back up” for things? So redundancy, maybe meaning not necessary but good if your main sources fail etc. lol it’s been making me scratch my head so had to voice it! 😂
One thing to consider is that spray foam is very very flammable. Especially with the kids playing with hay under the house (there's a reason why it's recommended to keep a hay barn 200 ft from your house), that's something to consider. You should insulate, but rock wool is much less flammable.
Also be careful with them playing in it. I know someone who's broken their back from a hay bale. If it's baled and carefully stacked, it's more stable nif it's unbaled and not properly stacked, it's a much higher risk of injury. Yeah, kids should be able to play and learn to analyze risk, but at some point there's some serious injuries possible.

We wouldnt do anything else. It protects your house from rodents too. It makes a massive difference .
We did flash and bat. A light spray foam then regular insulation. Less expensive than all foam. Boy is it worth it!
Hi Justin I just wanted to ask you a question I'm a country girl that's been involved in baling hay all my life pretty much we were never allowed to bail hay as Loosely as that's been bailed because we were shorting our customers and we would have never gotten paid I don't understand just because you're in a different state why it's okay for that to be bailed so loosely yeah it's great the kids can lift it but you're being shorted hay you're paying for. Your animals will be going through it alot faster and you may not have enough for the winter. I saw someone post about the kids climbing on it and breaking them down. LOL I loved watching them playing on tne hay and ALL my granskids play on the bales ! When they are baled tight like they should be you dont usually have any of that breaking down or at least we dont. Just concerned about the amount of hay you will end up with !! You just might like to talk to them they did do spray foam, but they also did concrete floors so you might just get some heads up on some things that you might need and not need. They’re truly wonderful people and they’re your neighbors not too far away, good luck I enjoy your videos
When I was growing up our neighbour lost a child that got buried in the hay stack. I have never in my life such a mess of a hay stack. I’m sorry but not a good plan to make it into a playground for the kids. Experience is scary
have you considered hemp instead of sprayfoam in the walls, floors and roof? it is also fire resistance and create so good indoor climate 😊

Keeping it Dutch installed a radiant heat fireplace that includes an oven. Or, what about a rocket stove heat source. Both are very efficient according to those that have them
Ceiling fans, at a slow speed can be helpful for air circulation.
noo dont spray foam. it hides issues causes rot by not allowing the wood to breath. look it up so many roof repair people builders swear against it once its on it doesnt come off so if you need to check for leak locations or anything with the roof care you carnt
