bearded dragon growth 1 month - 1 year

  • Cheese had a rough start but has bounced back really well! Looking back, I should’ve definitely rescued a bearded dragon because they are one of the most neglected reptiles in the hobby. However, that wasn’t a viable option for me at the time. My next one will definitely be a rescue if I decide to get a second!
    More Information Below
    ---------------
    Always purchase dragons who are older than 3 months. If you buy them too young they’ll have a difficult time coping with stress and may possibly go off food for too long and it causes more issues than there should be.
    Bearded dragons should also be kept together until 3 months old to develop basic hunting skills and sibling rivalry. Most dragons who are sold/separated too young also tend to have eating issues opposed to dragons who are kept together until 3 months old. Dragons are SOLITARY however and NEED to be separated after 3 months or it can develop into other issues like stress, dominance issues and sometimes even death depending on how severe attacks may be. It’s not a good idea to house adults together as they are naturally solitary animals.

    This is exactly what i'm going through. I bought my dragon at PetSmart 6 weeks ago. He won't eat unless I hand feed him. Very weak. I keep upgrading the lighting and the heat and trying everything I can hoping that it will help. They couldn't tell me the age of the dragon at the store but looking at your video I realize how young he is. Anyhow, your video gave me hope that if I hang in there long enough I can get him big and healthy.

      My first beardie was from PetSmart I had her for a year and three months and she was very sick and wasn't doing good at all. I had to have her put to sleep back in April. I was so upset. I vowed never get another reptile from PetSmart or Petco. My new baby beardie is very happy and healthy. Just keep an eye on them there health can go down hill very fast.

    My dragon, Bruce, was 8 weeks old when I got him. The little dude was eating like a pig from day one. He loves attention and will tap on the glass closest to my bed until I get up and let him out. All beardies have different personalities I guess. He's 5 months old and 16 inches already.

      Stimy Mcdongal i know this comment is over a year old but I want to inform you just incase you haven’t been, “fancy” is just an umbrella term for any bearded dragon outside the average one. They are considered morphs, my beardie is a citrus tiger and he is a yellowish orange, so unfortunately he will not turn red and may stay a little more to the yellow orange side for me.

      I really hope so. I feel like my four month old (I suspect he's a male) isn't growing very fast though he is always gaining weight and gets longer. My last baby passed away after never growing so I'm a little paranoid watching Oliver. It's hard when they grow slower since you always see them you don't see much of a difference.

    My baby girl Phoenix is now about 6-7 months old. Was beardie sitting for a friend who went out of town and ended up being able to keep her when she was about maybe a month old; shewas the runt of the bunch at the store, my friend said. She was very small and grew slower than others, I knew nothing about bearded dragons until I educated myself on caretaking. I fell in love with her as soon as i had her. She’s healthy and happy but stubborn w greens lol. I didn’t know that she shouldn’t have been sold but I’m glad she ended up in my home. She’s very loved here ❤️

We brought him to the vet multiple times with no improvement. I have a new one now named Picasso and I got him at 4 months at a better place and he’s very healthy and happy! Can’t wait for him to stop growing as crickets get expensive with the amount he eats! Definitely important to get beardies at a proper age! PS Cheese is such a cute name!

      Sorry for your loss! Unfortunately, a lot of the reptiles in chain stores like Petsmart or Petco are kept poorly. I wish you the best of luck with Picasso! I ended up spending a fortune on feeder bugs too as I'm not in the US and insects are so expensive here.

I’m pretty sure neither of them could have been older than 2 weeks at the time I bought them, but they are doing great. Both very sociable & eating well. I do understand why people recommend only buying BDs that are a little older though 💯

  • @PogonaCraze
    @PogonaCraze 6 років тому +1

    I wouldn't say don't buy one under 3 months old. Just as long as they are 6-8 inches, they should be fine. I got mine at 6 inches, she reached 12 inches withing a couple months. 4 more months later, she's now 17.5 inches long and very healthy. Just depends on what they eat, environment, etc. Each dragon will grow differently so don't be alarmed, but yes some pet stores will sell them under 6 inches which I think is against the law. Great video! :)

    • @ker_h23
      @ker_h23  6 років тому

      It’s best to keep hatchlings together until they are 3 months old because it encourages them to hunt and eat (classic sibling rivalry). I’ve seen a lot of the times from people who buy young dragons at chain pet stores, the dragons usually tend to have a harder time eating vegetables because they either refuse it or they don’t know it is food. Babies when kept together will try to outcompete each other and will try to eat anything and everything!
      Getting the larger ones is always better though as it shows the dragon is more dominant and you’ll usually run into the least problems with them as they’ll have an easier time transitioning to their new home and accepting new food.

  • @itsNazsare
    @itsNazsare 5 років тому

    I love this!! I just got one for my daughter for Christmas and was concerned with the grey pattern underneath the dragon. I see cheese had similar markings! Is this normal ? He’s still a baby

    • @ker_h23
      @ker_h23  5 років тому +1

      The grey spots indicates stress. I find that babies tend to have it a lot more often than adults. If you just got one, I’d recommend leaving it alone for a week or a even two without trying to hold it or play with it to let it settle in. What I’ve found is that beardies hate change, and will seem down and mopey after significant change. They’ll come around eventually, and the grey (stress marks) will disappear! Bearded dragons typically have white underbellies.

    • @itsNazsare
      @itsNazsare 5 років тому

      Kehrue thank you!! Yes they come and go! But I have been leaving him be. I’ll come and sit and talk to him when I feed him but other then that I just leave him alone. Today when I gave him a bath he was completely white underneath so I’ll just take it day by day. Thanks so much!

      Do you have a tube UVB (Reptisun T5/T8 or Arcadia 12%/14%)?
      What’s the basking temperature like (Air temp)?
      Have you gotten a fecal exam done for the dragon?

      Buzzcargo, thankyou so very much for replying, I have recently figured out that my bearded dragons temperature seems extremely high ( over 90 degrees Fahrenheit). No I haven’t taken lex to the vet before. Lex is 14 and a 1/2 inches long, but her head seems extremely small.

    • @ker_h23
      @ker_h23  6 років тому

      The basking spot should be 104-110F measured with a digital thermometer. Without proper heat they can’t digest food that well.
      Do you have a UVB light? Without UVB they may also not grow. I’d recommend taking her to the vet for a checkup and a fecal exam to make sure she doesn’t have any parasites or anything! Those can also cause growth issues.

      Buzzcargo thank you! Yes I do have a uvb light I realized I was reading the thermometer wrong her temperature is 103 so that is not bad correct? Also I will look into the exam. And thank you for all the help.

    We seem to be in the same spot you were. We got our beardie a little over a week ago, and we also didn't know about pet stores selling them too young. He won't hardly eat. My husband took him to a vet and they said he looks okay and gave some advice on what to feed. But he still isn't eating... Anyway, you saying that it took a long time to get yours on track gives me hope that he will still survive though. Could you give me more info on what exactly you did to care for him and feed him during those first few months? How much would you say he was eating?

    I had almost the exact same experience with my petsmart purchased beardie (Leonardo). He was so unhealthy for the first three months I had him, but with constant care and vet trips he rebounded completely. He is now a happy and healthy one year old bearded dragon. I couldn’t agree with you more though, I will not be purchasing any animals (especially reptiles) from petsmart ever again.

      Andrew Bove that’s so lucky. I’m really happy for u 😊 my very first beardie (that I got when I was like... idk, 8?) was so cute! Because after many years of waiting for my parents to go finally agree to get one... the only memory I really had with him was when he crunched his crickets and was like a mini dog when he dug in the sand... I still look into his cage, on his favourite stop (on a fake log) where my new beardie now sits. He got dehydrated after only a few days of keeping him. Before that horrible day of his death, the last words I got to say was: Norbert, I love u. Just thinking back to that is heartbreaking. 😞😞😭😭😭😭 I miss him so much! If only I knew what a healthy beardie was ment to look like... fat, chubby, and tiny eyes. As my beardie had big bulgy eyes, he was very skinny and was extremely week that he could hardly eat sometimes. The vets just couldn’t do anything... I guess they’re not to blame. But when I grow up, ima be a vet to save many more beloved animals lives, mammals, rodents, birds, and of course... Reptiles, in memory of Norbert. 😔😣😭😭😭😢😢😥

    Just got my first beardie recently and like you, didn't know that you should get them a little older. She's almost 2 months now and seems to be doing well, but I cannot get her to eat her greens. I know if she had her siblings with her she probably would've learned by now. Going to keep trying until she gets it, but at the very least she eats insects like a champ.

    Yes I got my beardy from petsmart a couple days ago. He does not have appetite at all however I’ve been misting his cage, and giving him water orally as well. I’ve tried worms, crickets , however I’m gonna get him a supplement that should bring his appetite up. I’ve been holding him though and he definitely likes it now then in the very beginning. He falls asleep in my hand and watches me all the time 😂❤️

    Omg this all makes since , pet smart doesn’t know anything An they swear the earliest they get bearded dragons is at 2 months witch is bs because they look like mini hatchlings I got mine an mine was the biggest of the 3 they had but he still looked way to young I say about a month maybe a month in half he’s barley growing but still small they told me to feed him only 3 crickets a day but I noticed he was starving an everyone I talked to said he needs way more so I started giving him way more an he was going crazy for them poor lil guy he’s doing better now but everything they told me was wrong So i just did all my own research an he’s much happier now , I have had him since feb 9th & he is about 7 in a half inch .

      Pet stores don’t get told the age of any animals sent to them and have no control over it, so anyone saying they know is probably guessing. Just my experience working in one. We have definitely had animals come in to us that we know are too young, but the breeders really don’t care.

      Sophiam Morales I got my bearded dragon and he’s about 6 months old and when we got him they told us 5 crickets a day, one day I feed him 7 and he eat them with ease we feed him more and each day and he still ate them like it was nothing, pet stores do not know anything about them, later we learned 10-15 crickets a day.

    i got mine march 27th!!! i am pretty sure its a boy, but its name is syrax!! the people from petsmart said that it was 0-3 months but for as small as he is i'd say maybe a mont or two months, he is starting to eat vegtables and he loves crickets but not a fan of worms, he is getting bigger, but ive noticed that this week he has been turning a dull color, but i am unsure why.
