I know some teachers need a complete break from school stuff during summer), but thinking ahead actually DEstresses me (so does sleeping in EVERY SINGLE DAY!). I love knowing I won’t be cramming all my planning in that first week! Thank you SO much for the game plan, though….after 21 years of teaching I can still get caught up in the minutiae and get derailed by tasks not really time-sensitive. Thank you for your awesomeness!! Time to go tackle #1 - clean out my email! 🤪.
YES NIKKI! That was always me too! I'm happy this resonated with you and you found it helpful even as a veteran teacher! 🥰 Thank you so much for watching and commenting 🖤 P.S. Hopefully your email has been tackled or is in the process of being tackled!

The information you provide, your energy and genuine desire to help people has won me over! Thank you so much for all the advice you gave, and I’ll be buying from your store soon! 😊
Absolutely! But, some teachers ENJOY getting little things done over the summer to make their lives easier when they go back to school so these are simple ideas that can mostly be done from the couch for those that make that choice! 👍🏼
I have taught for over 30+ years. In the past, I didn't do any school related things during the summer. But when school started, I always felt overwhelmed. For the last 5 years or so, I have prepped things during the summer. I don't feel as overwhelmed by all the things that need to be done. Do you! Relax or do some work. It's your choice!
In a perfect world, that's what should be done. In actuality, we use that time to attend PDs/learning opportunities, organizing materials, decluttering, spending time with family and taking care of things around the house that went neglected through the school year, etc. Some are able to sleep in (but most can't bc we still wake up early), relax a little, etc. Thanks for the consideration, though.
I'm a teacher. I rest, recharge AND do small tasks that will help me during the school year. All 3 of these make me happy. Like everything else in life, it's not one size fits all. What teachers SHOULD do over the summer is whatever each individual teacher feels like doing.
I’m doing a little bit each day- less than an hour. I’ve created a PECS board and completed spelling file folders. I have a list of reading centers to laminate but doing a little each day.
As long as I can sleep late and get 7-8 hours of sleep, I am OK with doing some things over the summer. Here are some of mine 1) SUB PLANS - If I know I'm going to be gone, I make specific ones, but these are generics that can be used at any time of the year. These were a God send when I got really sick last year. I started with 3 for each class, then bumped it up to six the following year. This year I am going to try to get it up to eight. 2) Copying - I take one afternoon during the summer and go in and print out a bunch of my worksheets and then go make copies. I bring my lap top so I can work on something else while I do it, but OMG does this safe so much time. I started doing this when I got my room assignment a couple of years ago and I am so far from the copy machine. I usually wait until mid-August to do this so I have a better idea of how many I will have in each class. 3) I try to clean out one shelf/file cabinet drawer every year. Not just straighten it, but do a deep dive and make myself get rid of things. 4) Go in and set up my classroom before we have to report back. It seems like 80% of those work days now seem to be spent in meetings and trainings, which means that there is very little time to actually get your room set up.
Thanks for the helpful ideas, Michelle! I am balancing a blend of productivity and relaxation this summer. Between short trips to visit family members and completing house projects, I have been working on some state and county PD, reading teaching books, setting up my planbook and calendar for next year, and laminating Math toolkit sheets. I agree that every teacher has a different situation during the summer and should do as much or as little teaching work during the summer that is best for them. Whatever floats your boat, as they say! Have a great week and thanks for all you do! 💜
Thank YOU so much, as always, for watching and commenting Mandy 🖤🥰 I am so happy to hear that you're blending both productive work and relaxation... I think that's PERFECT! Everything you described sounds like the perfect combo for summer... a little of this and a little of that. You're so right that every teacher has to do what works best for them! I hope you have a great week as well and thank YOU right back for all your support and encouragement! 🖤🖤🖤
Hi Michèle! Thank you so much for this motivating video. I‘m a 5th-grade teacher in Switzerland in my 30th year. That means a lot of experience, but time is changing and I love to learn from the younger generation (especially the part with technology and digital organization). Thank you so much! Greetings from 🇨🇭
Hi Andrea! Oh my gosh... thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment and for following along! I'm so happy you've been able to learn from me and I really appreciate your support 🖤🥰
As a summer baby the half birthday thing is GENIUS!!! Thanks for finding a way to celebrate us summer babies who dont get to bring cupcakes to school!!
My brain CANNOT rest during the summer and I get great ideas for the next year that I can't stop thinking about until I do something about them! Once the school year starts, I'm too exhausted to be creative. It's now or never 😂
Thank you so much. I've waited a little late...but I have about 15 days before school starts. I'm also using your digital anchor chart and poster printing. I am definitely subscribing. You are very insiteful.
This is so helpful! I've been watching you for years and am starting my first year of full time teaching in first grade this August! I appreciate all of the effort you've put into your content over the years, it's definitely helped me feel more prepared.
Aww, thank you so much for saying that Rachel! 🥰 A BIG congratulations to you on getting your first teaching job... that's so exciting and I'm so happy for you! 🖤 I hope you have a great experience and I'm so thrilled my content could help you feel more prepared! 🎉 Best of luck to you!
Thank you again for the ideas! I used your videos last year to organize my library with your book labels and it was a success! I do not have small children at home and get very bored during the summer so I appreciate these tips. You are amazing!
Aww, yay! I'm so happy this was helpful for you and that you were able to use my videos last year to organize your library 🥰 I totally understand... I was typically bored during the summer too so I enjoyed having little tasks I could complete to keep me busy.
So I just found your channel and TPT resources and I have to say that you are a lifesaver!!! I am a new teacher and I am watching all of your videos while I plan for the next school year. I just can’t thank you enough.
Michelle these are really great ideas. There are about five weeks until the beginning of the school year in our district and this is the perfect time to begin thinking about possible units for the first month or two as well as tips for differentiation which has always been a struggle for me. I like the idea of picking up a PD book and browsing for ideas. Usually I will wait until a couple of weeks before the beginning of the school year and then I feel overwhelmed. I think I will do it differently this year. Also thanks for the template for the back to school letter!
Hi Janice and thank you so much for watching and commenting! 🖤 I completely agree that this is the perfect time for you! I always enjoyed sprinkling some work throughout the summer and then being able to take the last week or two before going back to school to relax and recharge FULLY before the craziness of the year begins. Please let me know how it goes for you and I wish you nothing but the best! 🖤🥰
I just found your channel and wanted to say thank you for all your content. I appreciate the great idea and your bubbly personality. Have a great school year and keep up the good work!
This is awesome!! I have 3 weeks left of summer but am already in that back to school mindset, also I saw you did marathons, that is great! I am training for my 2nd, that along with my 4th grade class makes this fall jam packed! Thanks for all the helpful content!
I just finished my second “first year” of teaching. I taught for 5 years and then took an 18 year “break” and was a children’s pastor and foster parent. This past year I taught grade 1 for almost the whole year. Because it was a temp contract, I had to move my entire classroom home. I inherited some things from another Grade 1 teacher so my plan for this summer is to go through all my teaching stuff and get it all organized for next year. I don’t have a contract right now but I’m hoping to teach Grade 1 again next year. So I’m going to plan as if I am. I love all of your ideas so I’m going to try to do some of those as well. I found you about 3 years ago from your “How to Create a Google Site” video and have watched every video and used your products since then!! All the teachers in my school were always so impressed that everything I used was so cohesive in the look! So I’d send them to your TPT store and videos!! LOL Thanks for everything that you do to support teachers!! It has made my life so much easier!!
Hi Christen and thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment 🖤 I can only imagine how challenging it would be to come back to the profession after an 18 year break so many kudos to you! I think that sounds like a great plan... unfortunately grade levels change and sometimes it's at the last minute but if you have to adjust, I have no doubt that you'll be able to manage it. I'm so happy you found me and have been following along for all those years since the first video of mine that you discovered 🥰 You're so sweet... thank you! 🖤 I wish you nothing but the best of luck with this school year ahead!
Im a teacher (assistant teacher) In Japan. It’s different than America’s school system. I have to work over the summer, but I unfortunately cannot do half the things in this video. But In the future, I am definitely going to implement a lot of your tips and tricks for my own classroom.
I would love to see a video of top ways for teachers to use AI to help and streamline planning, grading, assessments, and more. Your tech videos are always so good. 😊
You hit the nail on the head about screenshots, bookmarks, saves to FB and Instagram. How do I put everything in one spot? Any ideas to organize it all? I get so frustrated when I find something good I had saved and didn't see it until after I've taught the unit. Thanks!
This is so motivating. I’ve been in a rut going back and forth about my tutoring website for next year because of what I’ve got going on (marathon training). I’ve got about eight weeks before I need to make a final decision. I am fine tuning my website right now (love your ideas). PD books also help (going to order the math books you recommended from your last video)!
Aww, I'm so happy you enjoyed it Russell! I hope your training is going well and you're able to commit to the race! Thanks as always for watching and commenting! 🎉
Thank you so much Erik! I really appreciate that! Yes, Ember has been getting plenty of exercise (but we also have to limit it because it's so hot outside) 🥰
Wow, what great ideas! I am definitely team get ahead for next year during the summer (while still enjoying my summer break). Some of these things I already do, but you did give me some new ideas and reminders! I was already planning on completely redesigning my classroom website and I totally forgot you had a tutorial on that! I will be going back and rewatching that one! I've only been on vacation for a week now, but it's never too early to start prepping for September! I do have one question that is completely off topic Where did you get that shirt? I LOVE it! I also want you to know that all of your fitness posts on Instagram have inspired me to get in better shape. I will be heading to the gym today! Thanks for always inspiring me in all areas of life! Have a great week!
Hey, hey Valeríe! 🥰 As always, thank you so much for taking the time to watch AND comment! I'm happy we are on the same team when it comes to how we spend our summers 😉😂 Hopefully the class website video is helpful for you as you go back and rewatch! Funny enough... this shirt is literally a basic black t-shirt from Amazon 😂 Here's the link: amzn.to/3Nyooqp You would think I have enough black t-shirts but apparently I can never have enough! Also, I'm SO proud of you!!!! You go lady! I hope you have a great week too! 🎉
I turn off my teacher brain until the 4th of July. It gives me balance and rest for a few weeks before jumping back in again. Good ideas here, I have been doing most for a while and it really does help to get a head start. I do PD reading during the school year though, as I am required to do so to maintain my pay scale column.
I think that's a great plan! I know every teacher is different with how much they want to work on during the summer. Plus, school years all end at different times so some teachers are already getting ready for back to school around this time!
One thing that helps me is creating your Google Classrooms. This only works if you know what you are teaching for sure. I add my welcome packet, Google Classroom information, create my main topics, and add the rubrics and reference sheets that I know we will be using. I have remote learning/blizzard bag expectations laid out. I also add the links to the websites we use and other helpful sites. It saves so much time. Plus, whenever you are explaining Google Classroom to your students and parents and you have things in there and loaded, it makes you look more professional.
Yes, yes, yes! That's a fantastic tip for all the teachers using Google Classroom! If you make a copy of your previous class, it will already have all your assignments/materials saved as drafts which is a HUGE time saver! Obviously you can only do that if you're teaching the same class, as you mentioned, but it's definitely worth looking into if you can! Thanks for taking the time to share 🖤
Nice ideas! I appreciate the idea of getting ahead on a few things over the summer. I have personally been too busy and not made working on school projects a priority, but I want to improve in this area.
I love this idea, so I was trying to do it, but my screen looks different than yours in google slides and google docs. I tried on my Macbook Air and on my husbands desktop Mac and neither look like yours. I couldn't figure out how to outline the letters in google slide since you have options there that I don't see. Is there an update I can do?
I purchased an iPad Pro and have the mini on it’s way. Do you have a video on digital planning for PreK. teachers and also best note taking apps? Also is the paper like screen protector necessary to take notes? I’m still actually getting used to my 12.9 pro
great video as i spend my summer revamping the essential knowledge for biology and designing my first interactive notebook:). thank you for the template hints and i will try to clean out the email this weekend:)
Let me put it this way. Teachers should do in the summer similar to what I would tell a student and that is think of one of the things that would get you in trouble at school and use the summer to do it. When I was a school student on summer break back when there were good shows on television I would try to use that time to watch them when I had the space to do it. - Dwight
Oh my gosh... that seems so early to me but we always went to school until toward the end of June. You must get out pretty early! But, I hope you have a great rest of your summer and enjoy the start of the next school year!
Hi Kiersten! First of all, take a deep breath... everything will be okay 🖤 This will be a new season of your life but you will be able to navigate it and adapt as you go so don't freak out! If you haven't already, I'd highly suggest grabbing a copy of my book, First Class Teaching, because it's the book I WISH I had as a new teacher. Here's the link: amzn.to/44b4jxt Hopefully that's helpful for you and BEST of luck to you! 🖤
I literally hate those meet the teacher letters. I refuse to do them. I don't feel it is necessary for the parents or students to know everything or literally anything about me. When I was in school I didn't know my teachers outside of school and it didn't traumatize me. I think we share way too much with each other. When I did this years and years ago it made the students think we were friends and could ask me personal questions about myself and I thought it was disrespectful.. So I stopped doing it because I am their teacher not their friend. I give them my cell phone number and my planning time. That's all they need.
I just don’t see how you keeping giving teacher advice, when you are NOT even a teacher! You obviously are only doing this for money not because you care about the teachers or teaching profession!!!
Can I add something to the list? Make 3-5 days of emergency sub plans - just in case!
I know some teachers need a complete break from school stuff during summer), but thinking ahead actually DEstresses me (so does sleeping in EVERY SINGLE DAY!). I love knowing I won’t be cramming all my planning in that first week!

Rest and take a break from work, that what should be done by teachers. Recharge for the next year.

I bring my lap top so I can work on something else while I do it, but OMG does this safe so much time. I usually wait until mid-August to do this so I have a better idea of how many I will have in each class.
3) I try to clean out one shelf/file cabinet drawer every year. Not just straighten it, but do a deep dive and make myself get rid of things.

Today is day two of my summer break!
I’m definitely going to do some of the things you mentioned.
Oh my gosh... you must get out super late (or teach summer school)! I hope you're able to find lots of time to relax and rejuvenate after a long year!
@@PocketfulofPrimary I live in Ontario and our last day of school was June 29!
Thank you so much Michelle. Highly appreciated 😊
Thank YOU so much for watching and commenting 🖤
Thanks for the wonderful ideas! You are so resourceful and helpful to all teachers.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting Jillian! 🥰
Nice ideas! I appreciate the idea of getting ahead on a few things over the summer. I have personally been too busy and not made working on school projects a priority, but I want to improve in this area.
Some seasons are like that! If you can't work on school at all, that's perfectly fine! Your summer is YOURS! Don't feel guilty at all!
This is helping my first-year teacher antsy-ness. Thank you!
Can you do a video on lessons for an observation and any tips.
So, so, so love this!!!!
Michelle do you organize your worksheets digitally or in binders?
Great information, per usual! Thanks, Michelle!
I'm so happy it was helpful for you! 🎉 Thank you so much for watching and commenting 🖤
LOVE the tips! Took all the notes! Thank you!! :)
Aww, thank you so much for the kind comment Taylor! I appreciate you watching and commenting! 🖤
Just what I needed! Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting 🖤
I purchased an iPad Pro and have the mini on it’s way. Do you have a video on digital planning for PreK. teachers and also best note taking apps? Also is the paper like screen protector necessary to take notes? I’m still actually getting used to my 12.9 pro
great video as i spend my summer revamping the essential knowledge for biology and designing my first interactive notebook:). thank you for the template hints and i will try to clean out the email this weekend:)
Ahh, summer sounds like the perfect time to do that! Thank you so much for watching and commenting and hopefully it was helpful for you 🖤
Great ideas & freebies. Thanks!
You're very welcome! Thank you so much for watching and commenting 🖤
I can't find the birthday cups. I went to your amazon store and I don't see them
Waaaaaait- I wanna know how to do that cute email signature you have!
I don't know why I never thought to make a video on that... I'll definitely make one! Thanks for the idea! 🥰
This was great several ideas even as a veteran teacher.
Aww, thank you so much Joy! I appreciate you watching and commenting with your kind feedback 🖤
Thanx girl ❤
Thank you so much for watching and commenting 🖤
Very helpful. Thanks
You're very welcome! I appreciate you watching and commenting 🥰
Let me put it this way.
Teachers should do in the summer similar to what I would tell a student and that is think of one of the things that would get you in trouble at school and use the summer to do it.
When I was a school student on summer break back when there were good shows on television I would try to use that time to watch them when I had the space to do it.

Thank you so much for watching and commenting as always Dwight! 🖤
Email templates = yes. Work hard once, then repeat. Edit as needed.
Hey Michelle we start back to school July 25th in south Carolina tell me if that is crazy
Oh my gosh... that seems so early to me but we always went to school until toward the end of June. You must get out pretty early! But, I hope you have a great rest of your summer and enjoy the start of the next school year!
Wow. I’m in the UK and I don’t start my school holidays until 21st July 😩
I love all of these! Can you share how you made your email signature? Were you able to do it in gmail? Thank you!
Perfect tips!
Aww, thank you so much Victoria! 🥰
Can you do a similar video as this one but for paraprofessional 😊😅
I've never been a paraprofessional so unfortunately I wouldn't be the best person to make that video. Sorry!
@@PocketfulofPrimary That’s okay, thank you for replying
How did you add your picture and info to the bottom of your email 😫 I need a tutorial please!
Hi Michelle, can you please link the handbook that you show with your meet the teacher letter? I can’t find it on your tpt store.
Never mind! I did a deep dive into your UA-cam channel and found it!
Hey Erik! I'm happy you were able to find it! It isn't my template but it's a fantastic product!
I love your videos!
Aww, thank you so much Marcy! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
MICHELLE
I’m a first year teacher who starts august 8! They’re saying my school should be finished being built august 1st…
I’m freaking out. 😅😅
Here's the link:

Hopefully that's helpful for you and BEST of luck to you! 🖤
@@PocketfulofPrimary thank you so much 💜 I’ve been watching your content since my freshman year of college. Crazy to think I’m here now
I literally hate those meet the teacher letters.
💕🙌
I just don’t see how you keeping giving teacher advice, when you are NOT even a teacher! You obviously are only doing this for money not because you care about the teachers or teaching profession!!!
Hiii 😂🎉 You should pin my comment :))
