Are Sour Strips by Maxx Chewning just Repackaged Sour Belts?

  • I heard about Sour Strips online and that they are actual Sour Candy. I was curious. (Could they really be THAT sour?? I had to know.) So naturally, I ordered Sour Strips made by Maxx Chewning online to give them a try and surprise everybody with a segment called "What did I order from the Internet?"-- It's great. And you'll be lucky if we ever create another episode.
Back to the Sour Strips... I found a few things to be odd about their origins and ingredients...A lot of Red Flags were raised. I started to compare them to the sour belts sold in our candy store and was quite surprised by what I found! Next was to do a taste test to determine if they were even worth consuming. Sour Strips are in fact delicious and an actual sour candy, but I still have many questions about how they are made, where they are made, and more. Tune in to see what sort of super scientific studies I conducted and what my conclusion is!

@bluur why would I have taken the time to research the dude? I was literally handed this candy and told to make a video about it. I didn’t look him up, I didn’t read his Wikipedia page, nothing. This was unbiased and based purely on the fact that it’s the same candy we sell in our store.
I wasn’t trying to win anyone over by bragging on the guy. I was just making a video. A completely unscripted video. Unrehearsed. Not practiced video. It’s absolutely amazing to me the amount of people that are basically screaming at me to let me know I should have researched him. Why? This is my channel. Last I checked I can make a video about whatever I want.

@@SteGenCandy because not doing proper research on the brand and it’s owner and making negative accusations and claims is called name defamation, brand defamation and slander. Not to mention the fact that after making false claims about him and his business you instantly promoted yours.
Now before anyone goes and tries to make the accusation, no where in this comment did I state, hint not suggest that he is or isn’t the creator of the candy specifically. I simply stated that the fact that you not doing your research before recording and publicly posting your review maybe wasn’t the best idea. Especially after admitting that you didn’t do any research in your comment thread and were pretty negative towards him and his brand in your video. Just my personal opinion on a observation.

I've been a Maxx viewer from the start, there are videos of him explaining the journey of finding the right manufacturer that would tweak the flavor to his desire, the videos are all there to watch. The same way his friend Christien Guzman started (partnered) a sports drink company (3D Energy), they don't have a manufacturing plant, they contract with a company. The same way they both do their sports clothing business, they contract a manufacturer, they don't have clothing plants.

Much to my surprise when i went to the site to look to see if they were caffeinated (which wouldve been a sell to me lmao) i see that they are just normal sour belt type candy? Literally nothing separating them other than claims that theyre more sour which seem to be debunked by a lot of people. Granted if im in the mood for a candy im fine buying it like I will order regular old sour belts but I think the way these have been marketed is disingenuous, and the comments section here is a bit of a mess of bro-y type people explaining candy to a CANDY STORE owner/employee. I consider myself a sour belt/strip aficionado. My daughter bought some of these the other day and I tried them. I was BLOWN away at how good they were. I've been buying these types of strips for years in various brands and candy stores like yours. I don't know why, but these just taste better. It was really, really noticeable, so much so that I immediately got on Amazon to find the brand and buy more. I had never seen the marketing people are referring to either so it was like a blind taste test. I mean, I just grabbed one thinking they were like any other but it surprised the hell out of me how good they were. So maybe they are made in the same plant (maybe not) and maybe they have the same ingredients but maybe the ingredient amounts vary and possibly this brand does a better job with keeping them fresh through their packaging or shipping. Whatever the reason, these are the best sour strips you can buy. Period. However, that doesn't mean the ones you sell are different, just that you did a great job picking the right manufacturer of sour strips, if they are identical.

    • @Pdj79
      @Pdj79 2 роки тому +3

They taste better because they are packed in their zip lock bag as soon as they reach the packaging facility. The ones you can buy in bulk at a candy store have been sitting in those plastic bins for days/weeks, are constantly in contact with the air, and are futzed around with by anyone digging out a tongful at a time. The sugar/citric acid is being knocked off and collecting in the bottom of the bin it sits in (seriously, look for one that is almost empty and check out how much sugar/citric acid is just sitting there). Sour Strips and Sour Power Belts are both made by the same company....Dorval. Dorval is located in Holland.....which is The Netherlands.
I will admit, the marketing is fantastic and I was taken in during the Dark Times (lockdown) but the prices are outrageous when you know the truth. A 3-pack of 1 flavor (the smallest order you can make) is $19.99. That gets you 3-3.7oz packs, or 11.1oz. Candy Nation dot Com (where I get mine) sells 3lb (48oz) bags for $19.35. Let that sink in.

They produce the strips and sell at wholesale, and a different company packages them and sells them. Nothing wrong with it at all, but once you know you can get it cheaper, there's really no incentive to keep purchasing the branded version.
As for the packaging, I bet they probably found a company to design and produce the bags and then they do the packaging themselves.

I saw this ad on Instagram. In general I'm skeptical of ads especially Instagram ads. I wanted to see a review. I wanted to see if these candies were actually sour, I got the impression from the marketing that they are supposedly really sour but most importantly unique and new!
Based on what I've seen on the comments they said he didn't make the candy. Maybe I wasn't paying attention enough but I did get the impression they were made by him and were unique from other sour candy, based on the marketing. Glad I could help! One look at the ingredient list / Nutrition Facts and it was pretty clear this was not a unique candy.
As far as reviews of sour candy go...It’s difficult to take a review of sour candy as unbiased or factual- there’s no way anyone could possibly perceive sour candy the same way you do. Unless they share your tastebuds... in which case, that’s weird and you should probably be in a Ripley’s Believe it or Not book. 🤣 A lot of people are paid by companies to help sell certain products so there is usually a decent amount of bias in product reviews. I can guarantee you that no one paid me a single cent to make this video- we just did it for fun. Had no idea it would break so many people and bring out all the hate! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

I don't understand the dislikes. That's literally what all companies do. Christian Guzman and all these guys also buy their clothing outsourced from china and just slap their brands on the stuff and repackage it.
It's cool to know where things come from. If people choose to support the person selling the item by buying their products, Then that's dope!
If people always wanted to buy someone's item, BUT like to save money. Why not buy straight from the source lol
Anyways. As i continue to watch as im typing, now im 100% sure the dislikes come from the part where you said "this guy Maxx claims he made this sour candy" etc etc. Sounds haterish lol but im hoping that wasn't your intention.
Got a like from me regardless. I do think that Maxx is killing it with the marketing
Like they say, you don't have to reinvent the wheel, just make it better. Ill be buying straight from the source now and bypassing you both lol. Just like i buy dumbbells from china and resell them for thousands 😅. Thanks for the candy knowledge!

How does that statement sound "haterish". That statement is literally the whole point of this video to test if that theory is true. Those dislikes are simply from people who bought the candy and made that they got scammed. They don't want to believe they been bamboozled.

    • @JonBondgsr

@@SourStrawberrys you need to learn to listen to someone's tone and sarcasm. The delivery of this video and her perspective totally came off as if she was jealous or felt she had got scammed. Way more interesting then saying, look these are the same candies. But definitely came off as aloof and derisive.

    • @SourStrawberrys
      @SourStrawberrys 3 роки тому +2

@@JonBondgsr I think you need take your own advice and listen to ones tone, because you're one of the few who picked up "jealousy". It was pretty odvious this was just an informative video of her believing there was a company ripping people off. Her intentions were good when it came to informing other people. And if you paid attention and "listened" to the video, you would see she isn't really a customer of theirs. She works at a candy store of her own. She didn't feel she was "scammed" as she intentially bought the candy just to review and compare to hers. She already had a suspension it was a just the same candy repackaged but she wanted to test that theory. She feels like they could be taking advantage other people who may not know by charging more for candy they can get cheaper elsewhere. And she is actually right about it. This is just repackaged candy. And although the guy didn't say he was the one who made the candy, it is kind of misleading to not make it perfectly clear that they are just repackaging candy you can order yourself so there won't be any misunderstanding. Because me not knowing the guy's YT channel and just seeing the Instagram ad, I actually thought the candy was made by their company. There is nothing on the ad that would have me to believe any differently.

Actual Candy's (LLC) first product was Sour Strips. A private label brand made by one of the largest manufacturers of extruded ribbon candy, in the Netherlands. The recipe is not identical to sour belts. The concentrations of the different flavorings are unique to Sour Strips. At $14 a pound, they are also expensive. Sour Strips is no longer located on Wright Road. They moved to a bigger warehouse facility on Pike Drive in Missouri City, TX. In two years Sour Strips has sold over 8M bags. the product launch two years ago was only 21,000 bags and they sold out in one hour. Maxx Chewning's other company is Ever Forward apparel. Sour belts may be ubiquitous, but Sour Strips are unique and heavily marketed on SM. Sour Strips are also the fastest selling sugar product at Target stores, (all of them), in the USA in 2021. Surprised you didn't measure the dimensions and weight of a Sour Strip and compare them directly to Sour Belts.

How much more do the Sour Strips cost per pound compared to a pound of regular sour belts? If the cost/mark-up is a lot, you can just buy a 2oz bottle of food-grade Malic acid powder for around $5 on eBay and just sprinkle it on any candy you want...enough of it to where the Malic acid will start to eat the surface of your tongue. If you want something the sourest, you can just eat a mix of Malic acid and sugar...or just pure Malic acid and just bypass the whole candy part of it.

As a longtime follower of Maxx, here's my quick take on this.
You did a great job explaining that he didn't actually manufacture the candy, but rather bought it and rebranded it. I've had the candy. It's not bad. But more than anything, it's been his marketing skills that have gotten the brand where it is. Seems extremely likely they're the same thing. The content of this video is good in that regard.
Any backlash that you received is clearly because of how condescending you were throughout the entire video. I totally get it, maybe it was just for added effect and to stir the pot a little, but you can't be surprised about the feedback (as you mentioned you were in several comments). You could have easily just said "hey guys I'm pretty sure this is the same candy and here's why." But you decided to mock Maxx, and ultimately his supporters, multiple times.
You can't attack someone and then wonder why people react negatively.

Before you reply with "Ugh why aren't you agreeing, why spread hate", take a second. No really, please take a second. Is you're reply improving you or making you feel worse. My guess is the latter and its because you're stuck believing that you're right and everyone else is just a hater. They aren't. You're video is complaining about a small company that is using industry wide methods of supply. How else is the candy manufacturer meant to grow. Not all companies are going to become as big as Haribo. But they do want to grow and expand and develop.
So people like Max Chewning come along and say "OK if you supply me with the sour belts, and this other company supplies me with packaging with my logo on it, and then I use my editor and social media guys to market it, then we all win". So the sour candy manufacturer is happy, the packaging company is happy, the customer is happy with the product. And the better the marketing, the more successful the business venture becomes. That means, more employees, better pay for those employees, more investment to be made into the product overall, security in the product, wider recognition of the product etc. To not do this is to rely on the product alone. To hope that the product is so amazingly, overwhelmingly popular that people will seek it out without advertisement. What Max is doing is not only good, correct and in line with all other labelled products, its also something that takes a lot of effort and supports multiple businesses profits.
I get it, you made a video with your honest opinion and want to stick to your guns and hold it, but seriously you're point is not in line with how private packaging principles work. If people did it they way you're saying, most products wouldn't be successful and would go out of business, meaning the sweet manufacturer, the packaging supplier and any freelance works on the marketing side of this loose business and sales.
It would make more sense to complain about how Haribo use their vast profits and personal manufacturing plants to reduce the industry prices, pricing more independent suppliers out.
If you feel the urge to reply saying I'm just a hater, please re read the above.
TLDR: This method of packaging products supports business, its not deceptive, its just how things work to make a marketable product.

My guess is you'll realize she is right and you are willfully misinterpreting because your stuck wrongfully believing that you're right and she's just a hater. Your comment is complaining about a small candy store that found that she already sells the same candy for a fraction of the price and you're pretending it's an industry wide thing to take something and literally slap a label on it and charge 4x the price of the original product and you've convinced yourself that doing exactly that is somehow extremely common and that consumers wouldn't want to be aware. Perhaps what you're thinking of is how people work with candy makers to make new products or mass manufacture their products, which is true as it's how they grow, it's smart thinking. Pretending that repackaging old products is not the same as that though. Is he adding value? sure, but is it worth it to a lot of people? Maybe, but pretending that making a video about it is somehow wrong is just deluded thinking...
You even went through an entire paragraph to say that he in fact is just repackaging candy and putting a new label on it... Yeah, and she tried the candy and found this to be the case. Then you complained about Haribo using their own manufacturing and pricing to push out small manufacturers... Max literally got distribution in a major retail chain... not a small business. Which good for him, but don't pretend like you care about independent suppliers and small businesses while going after a small business on the internet and you defending somebody working with a big business. Again that's not a bad thing but you're clearly just trying to defend the guy while also not recognizing the reality. This video is true, that's a fact, there is nothing wrong with what Max is doing either, he added a different type of value. But to a candy store owner what do you think they are going to do if they realize the candy they are trying is literally what they already sell but just with a fun package and 4x the price, do you really think she should pretend that they are different products when they in fact are not??
If you feel the urge to reply saying I'm wrong, I'm not, so please reread the above.

@Kristofor Long Twice read, yet unfortunately Kristofor you're still wrong. I'm going to write a reply and explain further, but I rarely comment on videos so don't expect a lengthy conversation after this one.
The repackaging sales method (or private labelling) is how a supplier/manufacturer of a product can enhance their sales. Its not misleading, just a different sales tactic, that is provably good for the manufacturer. It ensures them regular sales on a larger scale. They can order their ingredients at a lower cost due to buying more at a time. They can save on shipping and storage costs.
The fact that Max has offered a way of selling Thousands of Packets to Thousands of Stores means the Manufacturer is selling Millions more products. It keeps them in business. It protects their business.
So the question on my mind is, Is this Candy Shop buying from the manufacturer directly, or from a middle man who buys from the manufacturer in large quantities?
If its the manufacturer then how long will it take to generate a million packets sold? Can they support the manufacturer to a degree that they would stay in business without people like Max?
      or
If its from the middle man, then how is that helping the manufacturer, who is having to sell at a low cost to allow her to sell the product at 4 times less? What if the middle man/the manufacturer/the ingredients supplier increase their prices? Can she still sell the product at twice the current price?
The fact that Max sells the product at a higher price means she can still get sales, if he sold it for the same price, her sales would tank! Whereas Max can sell the products on say a 50% price, increasing sales and still be making himself and anyone in the chain of supply the money they need to stay in business.
Besides all the above, you have no idea if Max has spoken to the manufacturer in order to have custom product made for Sour Stripes, or if he intends to in the future. Maybe they didn't always make pink lemonade flavour (as an example). If he can say "I will sell 1 million packets of pink lemonade stripes a month", the manufacture can justify making that part of their production line. Its the same as a company like Heinz producing the store brand Ketchup, but maybe for Walmart they add a little bit of hot sauce to the recipe and sticking a Walmart Ketchup label on the bottle. Not branded as Heinz. Slightly different but essentially the same product with a different label. It's not even misleading, because it states all this on the back of the packet!
Any way you want to look at this, what Max has done for his supplier is a good thing, it's a very common practise within the food industry, and hating on him because "its the same product" is just realising the reality that buying on a small scale with no intent to grow bigger than a single shop isn't really supporting your 3rd party suppliers. It would be far more ethical to stick to the handmade chocolates and promote you're business based on those, and thank your lucky stars that you can pump up your range with additional products at a competitive price point, given that you're buying at such a lower volume.
She's right that its the same product manufacturer (Shocking that there aren't hundreds of sour strip manufacturers). The comparison between them is fairly unnecessary once that's understood. But the issue she's raising is not really an issue and can only be considered an issue if Max or Sour Stripes decide to take the "Packaged in/Made in" section off the packet.
If you feel the urge to plagiarise my argument again, feel free, its very flattering! But please realise that the comment I made is to explain, not counter, and whilst you were criticizing me, yours appears to be trying to counter me as apposed to expanding on any new information.
Just taking a second.... no really taking a second to think was she right.... Umm No, sorry still wrong.
(Btw, not from America, never tried Sour Stripes of any kind, only seen Max once in another video and happened to wonder who his supplier is and this video popped up. Didn't expect to have to explain supply chains to UA-cam, but guess you guys need it so there you go)

@@AKA-kp3gd, I wasn’t plagiarizing your argument, I was mocking your argument because it’s ridiculous and completely unnecessary. Though it’s clear you wouldn’t get that based on your initial comments.
You still contend that she was wrong… yet your entire comment was further detailing how she was right…. You are such a fanboy you just can’t see it. You pretending you need to explain things is kind of funny though, keep on making a bunch of straw man arguments to pretend you are winning. Unfortunately you simply repeating the lie that you think I’m wrong does not make it so. Your entire diatribe about private label packaging isn’t disputed, this entire video laid out the fact that this is what Max is doing, the fact that you laid it all out actually makes this kind of hilarious. "She’s wrong! here is how he’s repackaging candy that already exists at a substantial markup” just as she said..…. You realize you’re ridiculous right? You say that I don’t know if Max spoke with them about changing the products… They are the same, their ingredients are literally the same, they were made in the same place and taste exactly the same.. Do you want to ask him... had you watched the video before making assumptions to defend a guy you’ve never met you might know that. You pretend she’s hating on him in order to justify your ridiculous defense and going after this channel, yes you are pretending, she ended up trying them and asking the questions, how you choose to misinterpret things isn’t her problem, it’s yours. Though after seeing how childish his fans are I'm starting to wonder. You’re aware this is UA-cam right? You think people will care to watch a video where they realize the candy they are trying is literally the same then go on about how supply chains work which would just further detail how it likely is exactly the same yet add absolutely nothing to the video? (exactly like your comments) It really doesn’t need to be explained, but some fanboy like yourself needs to pretend it does.
I like how your talking about ethics by making the argument that a candy store owner shouldn’t make an entertaining video about how a candy she might be considering carrying in her store is actually a candy she already carries in her store at 1/4 of the price.
I don’t expect you to respond as you have literally just stated the same thing she said in the video. You were just way less entertaining.

Max has been transparent on his channel about his candy from the start. He’s never tried to market the strips as something he is making on his own. The premise of this video would be the same as being mad to learn that snickers and Twix are made by the same company and complaining about it.
