Excellent review as always! Was considering treating myself with one next payday, but I think I'll continue holding out to buy a Q3. Also why are so many devices getting rid of aux ports? Gah!
Awesome video! I already have a Quest 3 but I have some friends that are interested in VR and It's good to understand the differences so I can recommend them to people.
im definitely gonna get my hands on this, ive made a giant mistake when entering the vr world by purchasing a quest 1 LOL and when i searched up the quest 2 or 3 i was shocked of how much better they are, i will 100% be buying the quest 3s as it looks and sounds like it is very good for new vr players
No buy the quest 3. Save up that little extra, trust me it makes such a difference. Especially from the quest 1, it'll be like playing the PlayStation 1 and then upgrading to the 5.
Hey Jay, just FYI, I used your affiliate link to purchase. I've been subbed for years and this was my way of giving back to you and your team. You guys & gals do a great job providing honest reviews while covering the broader trends in the industry. I got into VR in 2016 with a Vive and still own a Q1, Q2, and Q3. I decided to pick up the Q3 for the following reasons. First, I was going to buy Arkham Shadow ($50) anyways--so that brings the price down to $250. Second, I've already had to send in a Q3 controller for replacement and have long considered just buying a spare replacement set since I use my Quest daily--replacements cost $75 each or $150 for a pair--so that brings the price down to $100. Finally, using your affiliate link gave me $30 in store credit--that brings the cost for the spare headset down to $70. I'm not a young guy and have ample disposable income so I could buy something like a Pimax, but I'm just so happy with the Quest ecosystem that buying a 3S makes far more sense given my situation. Anyway, I just wanted to share my appreciation for your channel along with my reasoning for buying the 3S. It's a tremendous value and will make an excellent backup/loaner headset for me. If someone is just getting into VR, the 3S is a great product capable of doing everything my Quest 3 does but at a killer price.
i always say that stuff to myself when i buy stuff lol. "so it gives me a free game, minus that, it's on sale, minus that..." makes a big purchase seem a lot more stomachable.
@@joogled1839 Yeah, it's def. a way to justify buying something. But I got it and I'm honestly pretty happy with the 3S. I use my headsets so much that I actually wore out the battery on my Quest 2--it won't charge to 100% and a battery strap is only marginally helpful. The 3S won't replace my Q3, but it provides flexibility (and spare controllers). And I already had a spare Kiwi battery strap along with a spare charging dock & batteries for the controllers so my 3S is already tricked out & comfortable. The 3S is a really nice headset--for somebody like me (who uses VR for hours every day) it was a no-brainer at $299.
Brilliant video Jay. Very well explained. Its good to see that the 3s is a great headset, many people who buy this are going to be happy with their purchase
Being able to play in the dark seems pretty cool, but that's about the only feature I would like on Quest 3, and also you can just turn on the lights(in 99% of cases)
Excellent and thorough review (as always!) I think the most important point you made was if u are interested in VR, spend the extra money and get the Quest 3. Yes, the 3S is cheaper and it really is for a novice who just wants to experience VR. But for someone who wants to really enjoy the VR experience, the Quest 3 is the answer. I myself was this close getting the 3S, but decided to “splurge” so that the person who will be playing along with me will have the same great headset that I’m also using. VR can be an expensive hobby, might as well make it the best experience it can be (Quest 3). I also think we see how fantastic Jay’s reviews are….we all need to SUBSCRIBE to this great channel!!!!
I feel somewhat mixed about the 3S. It's good that the price point has come down. And yet I sense that some people will be disappointed once they realize what they're missing out on by not buying the Q3. I would never want to trade the optics of the 3 for those of the 2 again. Maybe somehow getting the 3 price down to 400$ would have been better?
Gonna be picking up a Quest 3 very soon now that the price has dropped. I've been meaning to upgrade for a while, and I'm going from the original HTC Vive to the Q3 as my new dedicated PCVR headset. This is gonna be a huge jump for me, super excited.
I talk about that more in depth near the end of the video. I think you'll appreciate the upgrade, the mixed reality, and the access to all new games. It doesn't feel like quite the generational leap the 3 does but if you haven't had a 3 you won't be missing much either.
@@jaybratt Hey, this is a weird question, but can you tell me if the 3s breathable interface is compatible with the quest 2? it looks like the glasses spacer and the facial interface pins look the same from quest 2. if possible can we have a youtube short? thank you! :)

Probably not worth the £200 difference, but they do make everything look better. If you've never had the pancake lenses then I guess the quest 3s is the better choice, but the second you try pancake lenses, you won't be able to go back

The 3S would be a great first headset but I worry you'll always wish you had gone for the 3. The 3 is still the top and we've seen them getting cheaper so maybe this holiday you can score one for close to the price of the bigger 3S?
@@jaybratt yeah thats probably what i will do because i kinda want a higher resolution and pancake lenses (also the aux port) tho the price of the 3s is tempting. also thanks for putting a lot of work into your videos and posting quite consistently

@@Crossandthree-1568 Oh, I forgot it has better lenses now too, and real IPD adjustment. But wait, the Quest 1 had a real IPD adjuster, and OLED panels. Maybe I'm just crazy for expecting full upgrades (Quest 1, to 2, to Pro, to 3) without the "side-grades", or going backwards. Just seeing that someone else isn't as hyped really shouldn't change how you feel about it personally, or ruin your fun.
My Quest 3 512GB arrives on Thursday. I already have the BOBO S3 Pro with the white cat ears waiting, lol. The next accessory I'm trying to figure out is a facial interface. Unfortunately, I can't get an Oblik because I don't have an iPhone to own/borrow, and the price is a bit too high for me. I was wondering if there are any other facial interfaces that work well with the Quest 3 and BOBO S3 Pro?
The difference to the regular 2: color for pass through, better processor (same processor as regular 3) 20$ cheaper and no rings on handles. To the 3: same processor, lower fov, the 3 has higher resolution and use pancake lens
Great review I have seen in other videos you give different takes on the aux cord where you mention that the audio coming from the quest stock speakers is higher than other solutions because the aux port is not strong enough to power the speakers? So bluetooth would be the go to solution?
I cant wait to get mine ! its a HUGE upgrade compared to the improvised cardboard vr I had previously and I really cant wait to be able to actually enjoy games much better !
Not really on standalone. The quest line is mobile vr gaming. Psvr1 has still higher graphics and more stable frame rate especially with a ps4 pro. See hitman 3 on quest 3 versus hitman 3 on psvr1 to get an idea !!
@@hardtoget4567 The PSVR specs say it's "960 x RGB x 1080" per eye and the Quest 3 says it's 2064 x 2208 per eye. I played Resident Evil 7 on PSVR. It was great but it was blurry compared the games I've seen on the quest.
Just getting into VR, haven't purchased yet. I don't have a PC for VR, and don't plan on doing so. Looking at possibly purchasing the 3s or 3 as a standalone device for myself and the kids (part recreation, part education--earth quest etc). Is it worth buying now for a standalone device, and will the free/cheap apps with a few exclusive games be enough? Thanks. Wonderful content btw. All comments appreciated
Will the BOBOVR q2 head strap work on the q3 ? If not, in your honest opinion, for the q3, price me a setup with BOBOVR battery pack(s), hand controller straps, & if any other options, please & TIA
If you need streaming services like Disney+ or Amazon Prime the quest 3 and 3s are bad choices... Because the only streaming services that works in watchable quality on meta VR headsets is Netflix, but just the display definitely the q3
I have some soundcore Aerofit pro headphones that work really well with my quest 3. If there is any latency I can't really tell. They're really comfortable they're open ear and they last all day. I will use them at work and then get off and connect them to my quest 3 and I will have plenty of battery left. So hopefully they will work with my quest 3S when it comes tomorrow.
From what I know the Pico 4 has pancake lenses and a better resolution. I don't think you should upgrade unless you really want access to the Quest exclusive games. If you're not interested in those or you're using it only for PCVR then you've got a better headset arguably.
Was initially gonna get a quest3s because it's a cheaper upgrade with some features I'd really get use out of like the dedicated pass through button and the apparently better low light gaming which is very nice given my quest two always screams at me about the lighting in my living room, but honestly this video is tipping me over into just saving up for the 512gb quest 3 or even the 128gb version second hand. Now I just need an in person demo of a quest 3 and see if pancake lenses are actually as good as everyone says
3s is amazing with the s3 pro and normal facial interface. Still blind. So had to use a magnifier on my cell to look through the lenses to setup, but worth it.
I've never been able to get any generation of Quest to drink more than 17w of charge at a time when measuring it, and has always needed at least 12-15w stable draw from any external puck source to keep stable passthrough (power charging, not visual) power trickling back in while using it. Which makes many USB pucks useless, like the Goal Zero flip 36 (10.5w out), but the Venture 35 delivers Q3 another 3 hours @ 18watts out
If the passthrough cameras are remotely as good as the Quest 3, I gotta disagree with you: that alone is worth the upgrade, especially if you're not so much a gamer but a tech enthusiast. I didn't think the Quest 3 was worth getting initially until I 1) got a more comfortable head strap and 2) really started leaning into the productivity and entertainment aspect. Just being able to bring windows with you around the room and have everything wherever you want it is what Apple was trying to sell but in way too expensive a package. I didn't realize it at first, but mixed reality productivity is the future. I almost never go into VR, honestly, except occasionally for a change of scenery, but otherwise, I love watching videos on this thing or doing work at my desk with big ole monitors. And now that you can have 7 windows at a time, it's kinda incredible. I wasn't a believer at first but as someone who has bought both of the other standalone Quests only for them to pick up dust within 2 weeks each time, this one I look forward to using every single day. Just makes work a whole lot more enjoyable and somehow less stressful. So if the passthrough is good, get the 3S - it's like night and day from the 2.
I have a question what if I buy the quest 3/3s from a local store in a country that isn’t supported by horizon worlds would i still get the batman game and quest + for free with it ? I know this is a weird and pretty specific question to ask but i want to know to decide if I’ll get one or not btw keep it up definitely top tear vr content
guy i have the money to buy the 3s as my first VR headset but everyone is talking about the fresnel lenses and how bad it is so do i wait a couple months to get the extra $200 to get a 3 or i just buy the 3s now?🤔
hey, sorry for a somewhat off-topic question but i couldn't get an answer on reddit i'm looking for a vr video player, but specifically one that would allow me to lock the video to the center of the *view* so i can move around and the video stays visible i know skybox has some sort of follow but in a review i saw it seemed very delayed so i'd like to know if i can set it to no delay or which other player to use
also having passthrough would be cool, but even just a black background is good, as long as it can stay in view because most times i want it to stay in physical space normally, but in bed i want to see the screen regardless of what comfy but weird position i'm contorted into
i hope you redo tests with the same software because there could have been lot of optimizations since the last time you tested that could help the headset last longer or maybe less.
Ive been looking into buying a quest 3s ive had the quest 2 for 1 to 2 years but there are many cons with the quest 3s and i cant really afford a 3 so should i buy the 3s or should i not?
if you can't make the extra $100 USD to pay for the quest 3 any time soon and feel like you need an upgrade, get a quest 3s. i don't think it's a huge leap from the quest 2 VISUALLY. you'll see better performance but that resolution and those lenses are just eh.
My choice was easy. Back in October 2023, I had a Quest 1, so Meta was not going to support it anymore, and I knew what I would be getting with a Quest 2. I felt the Quest 3 made more sense because of what was said about the pancake lenses, and I knew the resolution was better and I would at least be doubling my memory of 64 GB on my Quest 1, if I got the 128 GB Quest 3. That's just comparing to the Quest 2 for everything else I said, and I had a Quest 1, so it was a no-brainer for me to get a Quest 3. Then my daughter tells me she is getting me the headset and feels I should have the 512 GB model, and I was like, wow! She didn't have to do that, but she knows I don't have much money. I have already used up 128 GB, so that was the right decision. Hope I didn't confuse anyone. By the way, that was a great unboxing of the Quest 3s, Jay. Thanks so much for sharing this information. Really love your content. Very helpful. Take care 😊❤
The difference is that fresnel lenses have concentric rings etched into the glass and are thicker whilst pancake lenses do not have those etchings and are thinner. Fresnel lenses cause more distortion and what is referred to as "god rays". God-rays make the image look a bit like it is glowing. All of that said, don't be dissuaded by the 3S cost-cutting features. Yes, it's true the Q3 has superior image quality, but that doesn't mean the 3S is inherently bad. When you're in a game you'll hardly notice. I've owned a ton of headsets (including Q1, Q2, and Q3) and if you're considering the 3S as your first headset it is a great choice. You'll have a blast with it. If you're an adult with disposable income allowing you to buy more expensive stuff then the Q3 provides a more premium experience. But for most people who are buying their first VR kit and aren't sure if they'll like it just get a 3S. If it turns out that you really dig VR then buy the premium version of the next generation. I'm strongly considering buying a 3S despite owning the Q3 and Q2 because of the low cost. I've had to switch back to the Q2 previously (when my Q3 controllers were being repaired) and I'd much rather have a spare 3S for a variety of reasons.
Its basically the same size as the quest 3, why are you not taking the face cushion part into consideration? that is part of the headset, as in you cant really use it without it.
In Australia the quest 3s 128 is $499 and the quest 3 is $799 aud. Do you think the price difference is too far apart that it will take too long to save?
Depends on how much money you make / spend and are reasonably able to save. Everyone can afford to spend a different amount of money so it depends on how it is for you
australian here. i was on the fence about the quest 3 and 3s, the sale is worth it. arkham shadow and quest+ have bad price scaling here, so you're saving a fair amount by just buying it now rather than getting the cheaper headset and then buying the games you were going to get anyways. i ended up buying a quest 3 for the full and best feature set they had to offer and i dont regret it at all coming from the quest 1.
if YOU bought it, it's your property and you're allowed to not share it. if your parents or someone bought it for you as a gift to share, then nothing you can do about it, just buy your own.
Yes it would be, the quest 3s is really good. Its better than the quest 2, its cheaper and has better internals. Its not as good as the quest 3, but the quest 3 just has better resolution, lenses and it has some depth sensors on the front.
How much storage space do the games on quest usually take? I wonder if 128gb is enough. If the games are under 20gb then 128gb is fine because I usually don't play more than 4 games at the same time anyway

Buy a second hand Quest 3 for about the same price as a new 3S.
@@dtz1000 definitely a good idea because im planning to get a new facial interface and head strap, the problem is it is hard to find them
I like the Quest 3 mic.
Awesome video as always! Looks like you've slimmed down! Whatever you're doing, keep it up!
what are the three ipd settings on the 3s?
58, 63, 68
Great Comprehensive Video! My 3S arrives tomorrow for MrTass Accessory testing ;)
Time to get to building!! Luckily a lot of 3 stuff still works the same for it
Id say the 3s is a quest 2.8
More like 2.65
2.4 and that's being generous. It's really just a Quest 2 with a new SoC.
@@Wooskii1bro why are you saying this it’s going to have downsides to it😭 if your not going to buy it dont buy bro, don’t ruin other people experience 😂😂😂
@@Wooskii1 no you should not be saying any since you’re not buying it
10:33 FROM THE SCREEN TO THE RING TO THE PEN TO THE KING WHERE MY CROWN THAT MY BLING
You could use no interface at all
the stock quest 3 interface is honestly fine. unless you NEED silicone/"leather" one, just keep the normal one.
The difference to the regular 2: color for pass through, better processor (same processor as regular 3)
20$ cheaper and no rings on handles.
To the 3: same processor, lower fov, the 3 has higher resolution and use pancake lens
Mine should be coming Thursday I’m so excited!!
do you have any suggested ir blasters for the quest 3
mad excited for all the people getting one for Christmas more peeps to play in vr with
So, buy the quest 3 NOT the 3s? I am confused, you didn’t say which one to buy instead of the 3S
Great review I have seen in other videos you give different takes on the aux cord where you mention that the audio coming from the quest stock speakers is higher than other solutions because the aux port is not strong enough to power the speakers? So bluetooth would be the go to solution?
And this is why you're the goat 💯...thx u
i like to know if the 3s work with steam vr games?
Another banger video!!
Im wishing for a vr for christmas, i dont know if my parents could afford an s3, how do i convince them?
I meant quest 3
ask for a quest 3s
The S3 was surprisingly light as well when I wore it
Im super excited!
so for someone coming off of the totally dated PSVR1, how does the 3s feel in comparison?
You going to review the open air facegaurd?
A quick question the quest 3s Will be able to play the quest 3 games that quest 2 cant
I cant wait to get mine ! its a HUGE upgrade compared to the improvised cardboard vr I had previously and I really cant wait to be able to actually enjoy games much better !
Your vr experience ⬆️📈📈📈📈
@CrImnalLiminal true, I end up playing vrc every days for hours lol
@@SpeedyGwen im gonna too
With multiple cameras to create some optical parallax, depth sensors aren’t necessary with the right software.
So I'm going from the og PSVR to the Quest 3s. I have to assume I'm going to see a big difference between the two atleast I hope.?
100% The resolution is almost double in comparison.
It was great but it was blurry compared the games I've seen on the quest.
does it come fully charged?
I would turn it on and set it up and while it’s updating charge it
they often discharge in shipping and storage. my quest 3 came with 70% battery on the headset and 100% on the controllers.
All comments appreciated
great review!
Will the BOBOVR q2 head strap work on the q3 ? If not, in your honest opinion, for the q3, price me a setup with BOBOVR battery pack(s), hand controller straps, & if any other options, please & TIA
What is best for watching movies en tv shows most of the time.
Quest 3, 100%, it's enough to really enjoy UA-cam videos and 4k movies, just enough, i can't recommend less than that for movies
Same circuitry on Q3/Q3S so they should.
@@teleotto Yeah after I left that comment I was like duh Sidney they will work lol now Will I have latency issues that's the question
Is the Bluetooth problem hardware or software problem
As someone who uses katanas for training, seeing you slam it into the scabbard hurt the depths of my soul
I've got pico 4
Do I need quest 3s?
Like would it be a gamechanger for me?
From what I know the Pico 4 has pancake lenses and a better resolution. I don't think you should upgrade unless you really want access to the Quest exclusive games. If you're not interested in those or you're using it only for PCVR then you've got a better headset arguably.
the pico's only real caveat is the bytedance surveillance and just a worse ecosystem and use of mixed reality.
That depends on the kind of games you play. If you want to play asgard's wrath 2, resist, and others yea but beyond it's few exclusives then no.
So had to use a magnifier on my cell to look through the lenses to setup, but worth it.
is a used quest 2 for $110 worth it for cheap 1st VR headset?
I've never been able to get any generation of Quest to drink more than 17w of charge at a time when measuring it, and has always needed at least 12-15w stable draw from any external puck source to keep stable passthrough (power charging, not visual) power trickling back in while using it. Which makes many USB pucks useless, like the Goal Zero flip 36 (10.5w out), but the Venture 35 delivers Q3 another 3 hours @ 18watts out
Wouldn't a simple usb to audio adapter give headphone capabilities like it does on the Pico 4?
I have a question what if I buy the quest 3/3s from a local store in a country that isn’t supported by horizon worlds would i still get
the batman game and quest + for free with it ?
I know this is a weird and pretty specific question to ask but i want to know to decide if I’ll get one or not
btw keep it up definitely top tear vr content
Does the deutschlsnd version come with Europe brick?
I haven't seen an EU unboxing but yeah it definitely should. Historically they always have.
Ja, es ist von der EU vorgeschrieben
I hope its worth it because mine arrives today
guy i have the money to buy the 3s as my first VR headset but everyone is talking about the fresnel lenses and how bad it is so do i wait a couple months to get the extra $200 to get a 3 or i just buy the 3s now?🤔
You better save $499 for meta quest 3
Buy 3s because you will need to buy games and other stuff
hey, sorry for a somewhat off-topic question but i couldn't get an answer on reddit
i'm looking for a vr video player, but specifically one that would allow me to lock the video to the center of the *view* so i can move around and the video stays visible
i know skybox has some sort of follow but in a review i saw it seemed very delayed so i'd like to know if i can set it to no delay or which other player to use
also having passthrough would be cool, but even just a black background is good, as long as it can stay in view
because most times i want it to stay in physical space normally, but in bed i want to see the screen regardless of what comfy but weird position i'm contorted into
@@aonodensetsu i think meta is working in this as an actual update, aren't they? like windows following you? or is this already out?
i hope you redo tests with the same software because there could have been lot of optimizations since the last time you tested that could help the headset last longer or maybe less.
I don't know english but it's cool
What headset strap is a I need that
What is the difference between the Pancake and the Fresnel lens?
Smaller FOV, smaller sweet spot and slightly more distortion. It’s worse in almost every division but that doesn’t mean it’s not usable!
Thank you! 😊
Does the quest 3s have one LCD panel or dual panel?
It has a single LCD panel just like the Quest 2.

It's your Quest. Let him buy his own one.

would it be worth it if I upgraded from a quest 1?
Yes it would be, the quest 3s is really good. Its better than the quest 2, its cheaper and has better internals. Its not as good as the quest 3, but the quest 3 just has better resolution, lenses and it has some depth sensors on the front.
It would have made so much more sense if they released the 3s last year and the 3 this year and called it the quest 3 and 4
No it wouldn't have
How much storage space do the games on quest usually take? I wonder if 128gb is enough. If the games are under 20gb then 128gb is fine because I usually don't play more than 4 games at the same time anyway
Well 128 is just fine if you are the only one playing on the headset. But keep in mind games like asgard's wrath are like 34 gigs
