LA VELODYSSE - FAMILY CYCLE TOURING THE W COAST OF FRANCE 2022

- This is the edit for the family - a reminder in years to come of what they achieved. A 750 mile cycle tour down the West coast of France to Spain on a route called La Velodysse. The EV1. An intergenerational family of six aged from 11 to 70. We dealt with a heat wave, illness, injury and wild fire route closures. Carrying all our equipment on our bikes for a six week journey.
NB This is an hour long edit for family and those who might be interested in seeing more of the route. It took a long time to edit and right now I haven't got the time to do a shorter 'public' one! I hope you enjoy it but if you are more into reels then watch the trailer! Otherwise open a beer/put on the kettle and sit down and enjoy. You could always watch it in two or more episodes.
Music from Tunetank and credited at end of film.
Really inspiring film and great to see the children enjoying themselves so much - a terrific achievement to look back on! I rode from London to Birmingham along the Grand Union Canal last summer with my 12-year-old grandson and he loved it. It's not easy finding a safe - and engaging - long distance ride which is suitable for children, but this looks ideal. Plans are already forming! Thank you for all the work you've put into this - it's greatly appreciated!
Glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes for your next cycle tour. Devon coast to coast
is a good short one.
Ian Healy thank you for making such a lovely short film, big congrats on the achievement itself and the quality of the film editing. I hope you all can enjoy more adventures again.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gift of a lifetime for Sol, Roo and Merlin to learn they can achieve anything they want in life! Such amazing young gentlemen with such a beautiful family. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
What a GREAT video and it's been a real pleasure to watch. Having stayed at a few campsites along the West coast of France with my tribe, I recognized a few of the places on your film. Great effort by all of your family and this is something they'll treasure for years to come. By the way, you all personify what I would call a 'typical and somewhat eccentric English family' and you have done England proud. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
My brother and I bike trek/camp in the U.S. so I totally appreciate every day as an evolution of grit, planning, morale management, personal satisfaction, surprises, companionship/teamwork, and joy. I saw all of that in this charming, engaging video. Brava to all of you!
My wife and I really enjoyed viewing this great video. What a wonderful achievement by you and your amazing family, Well done😊
Well done to you all for a great achievement, really
well put together film too. I enjoyed watching it.
Good for all of you. And the third generation making it with no fuss, bravo. Such a good memory
Very enjoyable watch. Well done the whole family and special kudos for Mary doing all that at 70!!
EV1 looks like a great route. A real achievement for you all to manage and get to the end in one piece! Very well put together - thanks for sharing with us.
Loved your journey. I visited many places as you touring France in my car camping with my family 35 years ago. So many good memories. 2014 I go back with my bike car camping . 😂
A really impressive and inspirational achievement by what looks to be a lovely family. Thank you very much for recording and editing your journey: your film was both enjoyable and informative. Hats off to you all especially those at either end of the age range, as well as those cycling on when unwell or injured!
Watched it with my wife. We have a 9 month old daughter and we're planning out future cycle trips. We've got Land's end to John O'groats planned for this Spring/Summer. Maybe we'll head to France for Autumn and follow this route. It's great to see families can still be quite active and still have grand adventures together. I hope to be cycling with my kids when they are as old as yours, and cycling with my grandkids too! My wife also wants to make videologs of our trips for future reference.
Autumn would be a good time when it is a bit cooler and quieter!
Thanks so much for sharing! Quite an adventure and what an opportunity to share life in such a great way. I find it quite a challenge how to deal with a camera let alone a flying one. But like they say:"You live you learn." Or crash 😊. Atb, from Holland with respect!
It was amazing. Quite an achievement and very well made film👏🏼. I started watching and couldn’t stop till the end.
Glad you enjoyed watching
Phenomenally incredible achievement for every one of you. What amazing memories you've all made. It was inspirational, funny, and so entertaining. All those skills will serve the lads well in their futures - motivation, determination, problem solving, Team building and the list goes on and on. Loved it. Will be watching more of your family videos. Hope you got the champagne out when you all got home 🥂🍾 😊👍
Very inspiring! The boys were great. Enjoyed your narrations and colorful chats with the boys, Thanks for sharing,
Really loved that the family bike toured together. I too average about 20-30 miles a day, and yours is the first vlog I've seen that is similar to mine. Usually biketouring vlogs are 70-100km, with hardly any rest days. My plans are to visit both The Netherlands and Germany at a leisurely pace, taking in the small towns and regional food.
Hello all, I've just watched your account of the holiday. It was very moving. You all are an example of what a family can be. The boys all reflect the parenting that all should aspire to. Most of all amazing example by Nanny. Superb to watch.
Many thanks!
A lovely heartwarming trip. I live in France and know the route well. All credit to your youngster pedalling along the Nantes Brest canal. A lack of hills but it can get a bit boring and tiring.
Your stop to let Mum and Nan prepare breakfast was almost opposite a property we rent out.
Hotels and campsites in July and August are usually pretty full, especially near the coast. If you can go inland a few km then you have a chance. Unfortunately many sites now don't take tourers and specialise in cabins.
The last two years have seen temperatures of 40°, far too hot to cycle in.
Thanks for sharing the family's adventure and of course credit to Nan.
You're family dynamic is amazing, I have two boys but sadly I didn't do anything like this with them (but wish I had). Loved watching the adventure unfold, thanks for sharing, HNY!
Great adventure well done , what I fantastic way of making family memories
Very inspirational I hope to do something like this with my children/grandchildren one day

Very enjoyable video thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Inspiring stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Impressive road captain skills, with the multiplier of 5 others to also shepherd south.
An achievement in itself.
This was such an amazing video and trip! I am blown away of all the adventures you had and the friend/familyship. But I can only imagine that it was alo hard work to organize everything and pack, and cook and ride. Such a great adventure for the boys! just wow!
Outstanding family adventure…one of the best. A real challenge managing logistics as well as everyone’s physical and psychological needs.
Congrats!🎉
Wow! We were at Camping Lac de Sanguinet in August last year. I rode on that same busy road from Sanguinet up to Dune du Pilat. Great video. 👍
Fantastic video - thank you - well done on the achievement and the perseverance of all of you
Tremendous trip something that your grandchildren and everyone in the family will remember with love. A big hug to all. I loved seeing it, it reminded me of a trip we made from Caracas to Kukenam and we reached the edge with Brazil, 4 adults and 3 teenagers, a trip that I will never forget and only the families that have made those trips know what that represents. beautiful trip
The wife and l did London to Venice six years ago and we gave up on warm showers I’d hosted many a time back in Australia and got no replies on our trip so when we got back I stopped hosting , it annoyed me that all those French and Italians that stayed with us couldn’t be bothered commenting on our profile so I suspect it looked like we were takers and not returning the favour.
Look like a great route you took I’m inspired to go back .
What an experience for you all, great to watch as well! Having cycled south from Santander myself through the mountains to Avila I can appreciate your trials and tribulations!
Well done everyone, especially Mary at 70 years, and the youngens too. Heres to your next adventure.
Really enjoyable watch. Over the years we've been to most of the places you cycled through which made it even more interesting. Great to see you get to grips with the drone, they add so much. Thought you handled the mutiny (23:30) very adroitly !
Thank you for sharing…I love the boys. A great adventure and achievement
What an amazing trip, and great footage! Fantastic vacation. ❤
Such a great travelling a bicycle with the whole family ride safe and God Blessed your family....looking forward for more adventure.
Such a great cycling video to watch, with 3 generations of a family.
How did you know of this bike path , is they're a book available?
Well-done 😊😊😊
Don't know of a book. Discovered on internet. Well signed route.
What a fantastic achievement, congrats to you all.
What a lovely journey and family, well done to all
Bravo!!!! 😍💖👏👏👏
Fantastic and really inspiring!!!!
Now that’s a proper family trip, the children will tell their grandchildren about this, they may even do the trip with their children and grandchildren
Chapeau! Thanks for sharing your impressive journey.
Great video, well done to all of you for making that journey, very impressed by the boys effort and persistence....What a way to spend a holiday

What an epic adventure, nice work guys
well done guys!
Loved the video - a great travelogue
ouu , "travelogue" , i like this word creation
I really enjoyed the video, well done to everyone of all ages. I’m in the middle of planning this very trip for 2024 so also found the details in your trip very helpful.
I was interested by your tent setups, I believe one was a big Agnes but couldn’t work out the other tents? Trying to decide on a tent for myself.
Anyway thanks for taking the time to film, edit and post this video.
Tarp Tent Stratospire 2. Have a great trip.
Great video.👍🚲🚴♀️🚴♂️
Meu sonho ❤ família maravilhosa
💜
Well done, an epic ride! Great family memories for sure! Thanks for sharing your adventure, the video is entertaining and well put together. The drone flying skills improved nicely over the trip as well.
Thank you Dave. Glad you enjoyed it
Hi, really impressed with you families achievement. Well done to everyone.
I am planning to undertake the same journey starting in the middle, late April this year. Would you be able to share your routes from St Malo to where you picked up the velodyssee route around Redon. Crossing the river and heading through Dinan looked like a great route.
Thanks David
Great video Ian,a thoroughly enjoyable watch beautifully put together.
Thank you David!
Have to say I really enjoyed watching that, you are all a great funny bunch. I stumbled on your video as I want to go Calais to Dieppe with my boys for 10 days. Would be great if you done a video on the kind of equipment that you took and where to get it all as I'm none the wiser! Also a little about your bikes and kinds of repairing kits you took also. I have to say the camera work was brilliant like a mini film, well done you!
Congratulations on your journey! A great family adventure and achievement for everyone. I hope you all enjoy many more. I also enjoyed the same trip but in the opposite direction in 2021. Joe UK.
Thank you Joe
wow.. this alone will make me want to get married and have kids just so i can take a family bicycle trip down the coast of France ! lol
Thanks for sharing this. I know what an epic task this must have been. Love the multi generational team. I'm hoping to get my family and maybe some friends over to explore France by bike next year and we are not particularly avid bikers. This a great appetizer. Do you mind sharing rough dates you were on the trails? Thanks again, -H
also appreciate you sharing the personal details and challenges of family travel.
We started end of July and finished Beginning of September 2022
You are the best cyclist family ever!
Thank you Inge
What an absolutely amazing and heart warming video. You are very lucky to have such close and loving family. But I have to as in all seriousness, where did you guys potty and poop during the day. I am sure each person had to go on their own schedule. So just curious how you all ha died that?
Fantastic effort, trying to persuade mine to do something similar is very difficult!!
When did you complete the ride? UA-cam is showing as 9 months old but that definitely isn't February!!?
August 2022
Hi. Great journey!. We also plan to do such a tour with 2 children but my daughter 7, should i wait a few years more?
You should build up to it. Start with just one overnight, then a little more. We did 200 miles of the Hebridean Way when our youngest was 8 but he'd done a lot of camping and biking by then. Have fun!9+
Beautiful. Might have missed it but how did you find the possible campsites each night? Did you just predict how far you'd travel and then google that town for a campsite? We are going in the summer of 2024 with two teens and hoping to avoid the full campsite scenario as much as possible. This video has been helpful and inspiring...thank you!
Hi Aimee, in the busier parts we tried to book campsites online a couple of nights in advance. In some places there was a choice of 3 or more fairly close together and we would take a chance that one had places. After 22 Aug It is not as busy. Have a great time!
I'm cycling the otherway Bilbao to Hendaye by train then up. The bit you did from Nantes, was that using canal and river please? Seems the best way beit convoluted. Thank you
Hi Alex, yes pretty sure that was mostly all canal towpath. We chose that as a bit more direct than the official EV1. Straight forward but a bit dusty.
Hats off to you for keeping that lot fed! its truly inspiring just to watch, dare I say it, just an ordinary family achieving something quite remarkable. loved the drone shots , hated the background music, it was simply too loud. That's not a criticism, just a critique!
I'm not much of camper. You think there's a way to do this by staying at a B&B every night? Looks like loads of fun. Thank s
En España, parece mentira, aún es un problema transportar bicicletas en transporte público. No ponen más que inconvenientes. Enviado la facilidad en otros países y es una pena pq aquí hay rutas increíbles
Great video but helmets are much better protecting heads than panniers!
what time of year was this trip taken ? the weather looks good for the most part
August. A bit hot at times!
Think of the “what I did on my summer vacation “ paper these boys can write
One year I took my nephew who was 12 on a cross state 6 day trip. When he went out for football in September the coach, said to the team. You guys are out of shape sat around played computer games all summer. the girls volley ball team is faster than you. My nephew said “ I biked across Michigan, what did you do?”
Have you got the information of the route you took please ?
I know this coast well... It is really flat.
Anybody with basic fitness should easily do 40 miles a day.. 4 hours at 10 miles/hour average is pretty easy..
Seeing the accident reminds me of why cycling without holding the bar isn't recommended...
The best month to cycle would be late May/June although the sea/lakes wouldn't be so warm.. Sites wouldn't be so busy and the heat easier.. Cycle early, arrive early and go to bed early....the best way...
Where are you stay? Are u feel difficult to stay at night time?
Campsites every night as shown in film
Can I join your family adopt me! This is incredible.
LOL! Glad you enjoyed watching
waaaait, did they say "it's bussin' isn't it?" , "it's bustin'.. it's bustin'" ?! i thought that was only an American slang @31:12
Bussin. As in good food. Apparently. They pick up a lot of American slang form you tube and gaming!
Whole your family is so brave.....
How come you couldn't cycle to the ferry instead of putting up with that eu bus nonsense?
Some of the road from the border to the ferry is dangerous dual carriageway way or otherwise over the Pyrenees. No nice cycle way. Either way we also didn't have time so the border made a good planned destination
