- In this next route learning video we take a journey along the West Somerset Railway from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead in a Class 33. First we have to do some shunting at Bishops Lydeard, before heading to Minehead calling at Crowcombe Heathfield, Stogumber, Williton, Watchet, Washford, Blue Anchor and Minehead.

Liked that very much I often visit the WSR for their galas both steam and diesel always fun. Thanks for this!
I believe preserved steam lines run under what is legally known as a 'Light Railway Order' and one of the items stipulated is a maximum speed, where permissible of 25 MPH. This is a lovely railway to ride on, very scenic. We were riding on it last week.
I believe that the Great Central Railway has the ability to run preserved train workings at up to 45mph, whilst also possessing the ability to test Steam locos at 60mph and diesels at 75mph. As far as I know all other heritage railways in the UK are subject to the Light Railway Act and are thus limited to 25mph. Hope this is useful to you. Loved the video! One of your best yet, keep them coming! 😊
+Ben Reid On the GCR, trains carrying passengers are limited to 25mph. The TPO service they run without passenger on board is allowed up to 45mph, with test trains being able to run up to 60mph. I'm not sure about the diesels. Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this video :)
Ah, I knew some trains could do 45mph but I didn't realise it was only non-passenger carrying TPO demonstration trains, thank you for the clarification. Looking forward to the next video, any ideas as to what to do yet?
Ben Reid I wasn't sure about it, but someone else mentioned the GCR a little while ago so I looked it up to get the clarification myself. :) I haven't decided what to do for my next video yet, though I can say I'm getting a lot closer to starting the recording for the Settle to Carlisle route guide. In the mean time, I'd like to make another route learning video on a non demanding route, as I'm trying to save the more demanding routes for my new PC which is just a week away now :)
Your correct about lower quadrant signals, they were indeed less common and were used by the GWR which became the BR Western Region; the LNER, LMS and SR used upper quadrant signals, though there may have been some variation dating from pre-grouping. The GWR/WR does appear to have been different to most other Regions: Hydraulic diesels; vacuum brake release at 25 instead of 21 inches, right hand drive steam locos, and until 1965, no official speed limit on some main lines! The Southern Region had an 85mph blanket limit and all other Regions had a 90mph limit. Not too sure when this changed but probably early 1960s for the ER with the introduction of the 100mph Celtics. Though providing 100mph Mk1s may have been problematic as at this time the majority were limited to 90mph.
+Ben Reid Thanks for all the information! :)
And I live in Spain, any preserved trains are run on the mainline. (Which in the Pyrenees is a bit old and broken)
Another excellent video, you are very right about this route, the scenery is fantastic!
+Rail sim Cab Rides Thank you! :)
I've been to Minehead. It was fantastic to see all the old steam and diesel locos. Haven't seen a class 33 though.
I live near the North York Moors Railway who run trains on a 15 mile preserved line between Pickering and Grosmont, some trains then continue on the main line on to Whitby were they have there own platform with a run around loop. I believe that they are the only preserved line to run a regular service on the main line as part of they’re timetable..
+Kim Robinson Awesome! I would love to travel on the North York Moors Railway sometime :)
The NYMR is 18 miles long between Pickering and Grosmont.
This was 1 year ago?! My god, how time flies!
You may read this I don't know, but you mentioned about the RH&DR. Did you know that many years ago Laurel and Hardy visited the railway and the driver of the engine they went on was the driver of 'Gladstone' in the Will Hay movie 'Oh Mr. Porter'.
Although there is the Bushmills line at Colertaine in NI
The West Somerset Railway is my closest steam railway.
Diesels are important for the West Somerset Railway (WSR) because it needs save up water and coal for steam engines.
hi PTGRail congrats on the 4000 subscribers very good achivement and could i request another class 319 episode and mention would be brill thanks .
+jenny oliver Thank you! I can't believe how quickly this channel has grown. Indeed, I am planning another Class 319 video in the not too distant future :)
Cool video keep the work
+ ptg rail thanks for repliyin have fun on TS 16
+Ashley Webb Thanks! :)
Nice video like always.
+TrainsHunter WCML Thank you :)
Ever considered the Docklands Light Railway and also between London Euston and Watford Junction (London Overground route)?
Its just a game !!!! Nothing like driving a real class 33.
Mark Craddock i know. I wish it was a more realistic experience. But some trains can be pretty accurate when modelled correctly.
You what to try the mid-Hants Railway (Watercress Line) it's great plase to go.
+David Murphy thanks, I will check it out :)
I 'd very much like to see the journey from Shinjii to Bingo Orchaii - I wonder if there is such route learning video ?
Do one on gwsr is that fun to drive
Great video nice one how do u publish scenarios to steam that u have created?
Fantastic as usual! Very well done :)
Although, are phones not supposed to be turned off while at the controls?
+Enterprising Rail Films Thank you! Did you hear the sound of my phone? I thought it was silenced lol XD
+PTGRail No problem :)
Indeed I did, near the start of the film. If any Irish or Northern Irish routes come out, will you do a film on it?
+Enterprising Rail Films I just rewatched the start and now I hear it too. I didn't notice it last night lol XD I sure will do a video on any Irish routes if they are made for Train Simulator :)
+PTGRail ah, I happens to all of us ;)
Oh goody, can't wait.... Come on. DTG, make some Irish stuff now ;)
Thank you
+PTGRail Thanks old chap
train similar 2016 is out :-)
+Ashley Webb Indeed it is and I now have it :)
When are u gonna do the return of the Glasgow Central - Carlisle and Carlisle - Preston in class 221? Example how about u do a class 221115 bombardier Reskin from dp simulation :).
+Tim O'Grady At some point soon :)
+PTGRail ok
Ptg? What's happened with the videos? Haven't seen anyway in a while. Any more coming up?
Of course there are more videos coming up. In the last two weeks I've started uni and been through a big PC upgrade. I've had to download and reinstall everything again, getting everything set up. I've also had to balance my time between uni, my job and the PC. I'm making a new video on the South London Network very shortly to demonstrate the new PC :)
Sounds good. Look forward to seeing it :)
Devon?? Somerset surely.
Did I say Devon in this video?
Are you doing Train Simulator 2016
Where in Kent/ east Sussex do you live
Is there a Northern Irish railay in TS 2015? I would like to know.
Not as yet, but I hope one or two comes soon
+Enterprising Rail Films I want the Larne harbor to Belfast Great victoria and Portrush to Belfast Central
+jfjhjf ytrhjy rtgertfg You could do the whole NIR network & it still won't be as big as some recent routes on TS.... I would ideally like the Bangor to Portadown via GVS route & the Derry / Londonderry to GVS via portrush route with the Antrim branch included.....
One only dreams....
6:39 Well now we know he had a Samsung ;-)
25Mph is slow by donkey standards, let alone trains
+jfjhjf ytrhjy rtgertfg LOL, I agree XD
I did travel on two heritage routes, one the North Norfolk Railway between Holt and Sheringham and the route between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster in the Midlands, both railtours. The second of these was on an Chiltern express train from London Marylebone via Birmingham and return. You mentioned the Bluebell Railway, that starts from East Grinstead I believe.
swange railway on a diesel
I hate being a bother but the screeching round bends is unbearable
+jfjhjf ytrhjy rtgertfg Unfortunately there's not much I can do about that. It wasn't that noticeable to me, but alas trains can squeal really loudly on curves in real life too XD
