  • Art2Life.com - Caroline Millar was creatively blocked for a long time. She loved art as a child but had a terrible experience with an art teacher when she was 16. Because of it, she stopped painting for 25 years. She went through a difficult time where everything creative disappeared from her life.
Five years ago, Caroline joined our Creative Visionary Program. She embarked on a journey of self-discovery and artistic exploration. Caroline experienced a profound shift in her perspective and her life and work were transformed.
Caroline now helps other artists navigate their creative journeys, drawing on her own experiences to provide empathy, support, and guidance. Her approach is rooted in understanding and compassion, empowering artists to overcome self-doubt and embrace their unique artistic voices.
In this conversation, we cover her extraordinary journey back to her art. Let her story inspire you to dig deeper and reconnect with your creative self. Because art is transformative and endless possibilities come when we embrace our creativity.

Caroline and Nick I so enjoyed this Podcast. I can relate to so many things Caroline touched on, especially the part about criticising our own artwork. It is a reflection of how I feel about myself a lot of the time. My art is not good enough, it’s not loose enough, it’s constrained and I’m trying to make art that is pleasing to others. Sums up my life really. I am working on finding the joy and doing lots of self care at the moment. I’ve even ventured out to the studio today and listened to another Art2Life podcast. I’m feeling liberated and more carefree. A true moment of authentic happiness. Thank you for sharing part of your life/art journey. Much appreciated 😊

I'm currently taking the workshop, and I'm learning so much. Marilyn Schenk is my name. This podcast with Caroline resonates with me more than I can express. I relate to everything she says and have so many similar experiences. This podcast has made me realize that I can do it! I've only been painting for a short time and started because of a burning desire to just paint. I could share so much more, but just know that everything I am and will be learning from Art2Life is truly changing me and giving me a gift I can not repay. ❤

I'm loving the workshops thus far, but this episode...OMG, so good! I can relate to Caroline's journey so much, and it inspires me to keep pushing the boundaries of what my art can be.
Because I'm someone that loves processes; how things work (or not, lol), creating or enhancing things to flow for better understanding and application, I've always felt conflicted with my creative side. But now, I'm starting to see that there doesn't have to be conflict; they can coexist. And in that coexistence, provide me with space and freedom to rest, recharge, and gain new perspective.
Yesterday, I wasn't able to join the live session, but watched later in the evening. Earlier in the day, I wrote a poem (writing is my first love). After watching the Value session, I reread my poem from earlier in the day and found principles of what Nick and the other coaches shared about contrast and how you need the differences between light and dark for balance. The art I made yesterday wasn't in the form of a physical painting, but one of using words to provide the visualization. I've included it below.😊
    Peace, Love, Life, and Vulnerability
Winds blow as the rain falls on white flower petals striated with crimson.
The strength and hardiness of the flower are put to the test by wind gusts exposing the pink underside of its petals.
Though tossed about, the flower stands determined to use the purity of the rain for nutrients and minerals to fortify its growth.

Hey Caroline you are absolutely right when you said that when people are speaking about their art they are really talking about themselves! Many years ago I did a person centred art therapy course and everything we transferred into our drawings/paintings came from our sub-conscious! Yes I’m an ex counsellor too, doing Nick’s free online course at the moment. Loved your story 😊

I understand where Caroline is coming from. I left my belongings in the care of family and friends who rifled through my stuff, taking my art folio and artwork, my fashion designs and valuables. This was my family that did this to me, it knocked my life spark out crushing my creativity as well as my soul. I too found a post on facebook offering a free art workshop study, it was you Nicholas Wilton of Art2Life, this was about 3 or so years ago now. It has taken me a long time to find me again after my life was stolen from me, I haven’t progressed much it is a slow process for me, the brokenness hasn’t healed probably never will but I’m trying to find the spark, I have Nicholas Wilton to thank for exposing the light again. Thank you Nick 🙏🏻.

Related to Caroline's experience with an instructor; that had me recall a similar experience in grrade school with a teacher ridiculing a "design" element I'd added to a crayon drawing celebrating a holiday...I was 6 years old and the 64 year interim has had me questioning and doubting myself ever since.

I have never had any formal teaching it art and now feel this is my next step… thank you for sharing your story xx 💝

Oh Caroline! You resonated with me! You made me remember who I am! I also put my painting on the side for years! Helping people around me to find their way and forgetting who I am! These past year I notice that people were taking decision really fast and I have seen the the life wheel is much faster now so people get on and ouff they fly, I started looking for myself many years ago when the wheel was slower!! It took more time to find what we were! So maybe we need, I say we but probably should say I, so maybe I need to step out of the wheel and get back on so it will be faster! I don't know if you can understand what I mean but I think I just explained it to myself!! I love everything about this conversation! Knowing that we are artist and saying it, is all about accepting who we are but it can be scary when if we say that we are an artist, we think every painting as to be good or great but no, we can just have fun and see what happens!! Thank you so much! I think this helps me in going forward! Thank you so much!❤

What a moment fir me when Caroline said when people criticise their painting, they are actually finding fault with themselves. Our painting reflects something in us, seemingly also sides of ourselves that have been suppressed or abandoned.
I had just commfnted on the FB group that my paintings seemed tight and put it down to a rule keeping mentality: trying to get the principles "right".
I feel I have at last the frame and insight that msy catapault me out of this boxed way of seeing.
Nic I know you have talked about this "crossover" between us and our work, but I just didnt seem able to grasp it at the time.
You art coaches are amazingly generous with your time and expertise. ❤ thank you so much.

Caroline really spoke to me when she said that if artists feel their art is too stilted then they are really talking about the way they feel. I have been following artists whose work is loose and expressive wishing I could paint that way. My situation at the moment has prevented me from living the way I want to , and my art and life are stilted as a result. Makes perfect sense. Maybe whilst feeling a certain way it is wiser to just create according to those feelings and not fight it.

Thank you for this podcast, you both are so inspiring! What got me thinking was when Caroline said how she is now more loose in her paintings, but when she started, every mark was much more though about, she used the grids, etc. I can relate to that, that's where I am right now, too. I guess I am afraid of making mistakes, wasting the paint and canvas/paper/my enthusiasm.. even though I know it sounds ridiculous! Any suggestions on how to get over this?

I wasn't rejecting convention and, in fact, wasn't very conscious that I had made a decision at all. I just hadn't looked around to see that all the other boxes were red or pink. They are better than Ikea's posters. Nicholas Wilton is in the same school. Abstract art is perfectly ok for me also if it is good.
