The film was restored for a documentary a few years back. The foam on the microphone was placed there because there were 40 mph wind blowing. They cut the foam out of the bands instrument cases. ✌️
Someone once said that if Jimi isn't your favorite guitar player, he's your favorite guitar player's favorite. And that sums it up. There are many good or even great guitar players in the world, and then there's Jimi. A class of one that has never been equalled. Guitar was as natural to him as breathing is to you and me. Inna, he taught himself how to play (!) and he frequently played both the lead and rhythm parts at the same time! The word genius is tossed around too loosely today, but Jimi was a true musical genius and the more you learn about him the more amazed you will be. I really enjoy seeing a lovely young lady of your generation discover the music of my generation. It was a time of incredible musical talent and rock has yet to equal it in the 50 years since. Your musical journey is just getting started. Enjoy!
There just was no one else who played like Jimi at that time, he just amazed everyone with his far out antics, he is still at it as well in his videos, he has just amazed you, the elder generation were not happy with this devils music, Jimi was and still is the best, such a shame we lost him so soon...
Jimi was doing things with 1960's technology that most guitarists today STILL can't do, even with all of the advances since then. But underneath all of that, he was also an incredible guitar player, even without the pedals and the feedback. Yet he was a very humble man, never claiming to be great, and even avoiding praise from others. The true greats don't need to tell us they're great...it's OBVIOUS!!
@@NostalgicMem0ries ...much of it was done purely through his technique. He had an innate understanding of feedback and how to manipulate it to create unique sounds. He also looked at music differently. I once read a story about Jimi recording a solo for someone else once. He took his guitar apart and made some sounds by messing with the selector switch, and asked the engineer to record it backwards. The end result was said to sound like desert winds. He was just ahead of his time.
Hello again, Inna. Good to see you're discovering more Hendrix. I left you a short list of his songs to check out, but I realized after the fact that I'd left off "Purple Haze", one of the most famous & most instantly recognizable songs he ever made. I hope you get to all of his work eventually. Cheers.
Whenever I hear Hendrix I stop doing what I am doing to listen; however many times I have listened before. Hendrix played the guitar in a way nobody had ever done before and his influence on some many guitar players world wide and even until today is enormous.
Isn’t it a shock to discover that performers 30 years before you were born (making some assumptions there) were the epitome of cool? Thanks again, Inna.
That wasn't a game changer, left handed guitars made up about 5% of fenders yearly output. Meaning they were very super rare. Back then if you were left handed, you just bought a right handed guitar, either played it like it was, like Albert king or dick dale or restrung it like jimi did.
I'M a huge Jimi Hendrix fan he will aways be the GOAT ! You have seen him playing with his teeth and behind hid head ! Also he plays a right handed guitar upside down 90% of the time lol ! Thanks Inna btw Hendrix inspired Misa from Band-Maid to play
A lot of fans love this song, my personal favorite from him is "All along the watch tower" Jimmy was definitely a rule breaker, and by doing so he changed the way people looked at and played the guitar. EVH included.
This was the year he died. I remember that day well. The announcer said, "We have some bad news this morning from London,,,,,". My hero was suddenly gone, but the music Rocks On!
Good Reaction to JImi the Great! Pali Gap, Machine Gun ( Band of Gypsies ), Little Wing ( Beautiful etheric Love Song) , Stone Free, Hey Baby , Castles Made of Sand. I sense that you Dig JImi’s playing and charisma and know you will have numerous Mind blowing experiences listening to this Brilliant Artist’s music and poetry…. JOK
Extra sponge on mic is to reduce unwanted noises such as the wind and other touchy sounds, plus maybe those amps may be providing some issue as well. You want the voice and little else on the voice mic.
The drummer Mitch Mitchell did something amazing as well. The wind had blown so hard that the several mics on the drums, despite their efforts, had so much noise that the recording wasn't usable. Mitchell told the studio engineer to play the video, and he recreated, in the studio, his drum performance note-for-note while watching the show on screen. Mitch Mitchell knew his parts so well that he saved this performance for history by entirely re-recording all the drum parts flawlessly. Astounding.
I'm happy to see that a young girl like you is becoming a huge Jimi Hendrix fan. If you want to do a video about his romantic material, listen to "The Wind Cries Mary" from Monterey or from Stockholm in 1967, you can easily find both videos on YT.
Love you Inna, side note he's left-handed, and is playing a right handed Fender Stratocaster turned upside down which changes the way the guitar sounds with the orientation of the pickups etc.
Long story, dont have time now, but wound up befriending Jimi's best friend & bass player Billy Cox-seen here. Is excellent interview musicians hall of fame billy cox little known facts about hendrix, his training 5 yrs in nashville b4 fame! Also 1965 1st hendrix tv appearance on nashville night train tv show, inspiration for soul train!!! Rock On, mofos! 🤘🌎❤
Maui was an awesome gig, small gathering on a hillside on Maui, an island in the Hawaiian Island Chain (also famous for Maui Wowi Canabis) and Hendrix played like he was at a famous festival, just a smaller one than usual. You should also see his performance of this at Woodstock, he was a musical volcano for sure. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
I grew up listening to Jimmy Hendrix and had all his vinal record albums.Another great from Seattle Washington.Try reacting to Hey Joe, Monterey Pop Festival 1967 where he plays the guitar with he's teeth!
"Voodoo Chile" is a slower ~15 min jam session that made the cut onto the album 'Electric Ladyland' and is definitely worth a listen and an investigation into the story behind that jam session ‼️🤔🧐
I am new to your channel. I love your reactions just think how many grand mamas in granddad is on that island at that time a lot of those peoples got to be 70 to 75 years old today 😊
This is one of my favorite songs by Jimi. Thank you for your reaction. Another great is Stone Free. Stevie Ray Vaughan did an excellent version of this song. You ought to give his version a listen too. You were talking about Jimi's expression while playing... you should see Stevie's stank face when he is playing... you can tell he is lost in the music.
The foam rubber around all of the microphones is because it was a very windy day and that stopped the microphones from picking up wind noise. That was also an extremely small crowd ‼️😲
Jimmy lived near Bond st Tube Stn in South Moulten st in The former House of Composer George Frederick Handel !! Hows that for a coincidence ?? Another couple of bands to look up,Thin Lizzie(whiskey in the jar),& The Small Faces (Ichycoo Park),& Humble pie(Live at the Philmore),Early days!!
Jimi was a gamechanger with guitars, parrents trying NOT to make their kids listning to the devil music of electric guitar..lol, but the parrents was there to listening, its very diffrent nowadays, there would not be a game changer like Jimi, as he was the ONE at this moment, today, there is loads of great guitar players, but Jimi got all the attention, for being alone doing this..
The sponge was on the microphone to keep it from running away into a scream, He was playing with eight 100 watt amps each with four 12 inch speakers. It was so loud it made your clothes move around you. You not only heard the music you felt it and it even moved the grounf.
This is some of the best video I've seen of Jimi. He was a once-in-a-lifetime talent, gone far too soon. A funny thing to think of... the kids who are in the audience are now grand parents and great grand parents ;)
The foam was on the mic to dampen the sound of the wind because it was windy outside that day, but unfortunately there was too much foam and as you point out as a result you can hardly hear his vocals.
I used to know someone who was at this concert. It was his last American concert, at the foot of a dormant volcano in Maui. The following September, he died in London. This concert video was used in a movie called Rainbow Bridge. Hendrix' manager set it up in an effort to squeeze money out of Warner Brothers, because of a contractual anomaly the manager wanted to take advantage of to scam the record company. BTW, the sponge on the mic was an improvised attempt to solve the problem of high winds being recorded. It was very windy.
All along the watchtower, Purple Haze live Atlanta, Machine Gun live Fillmore East, Star Spangled Banner/US Anthem live Woodstock, Angel, Little Wing, Are you experienced?, Gypsy eyes. There are also jazz versions by Gil Evans Orchestra.
Yeah, but this wasn't a concert film, it's kind of a home movie by the guys on Maui who were making a film called Rainbow Bridge and got Jimi to do the soundtrack. The whole project was an abject disaster...
I believe the sponge on the vocal microphone at an outdoor show like this, was to keep the wind from creating unwanted noise on the vocal amplifier. PS - Not to be a downer, & I could be wrong, but I believe this may have been his last public performance before he died
The foam from their road cases (not a sponge) was to block the high winds they had that day. This wasn't his last show, this was July 30, his last proper show was September 6 in germany.
Your next step is Jim Hendrix, Johnny B Goode, Berkeley. Without a doubt one of Jimi's most stunning performances. Chuck Berry when asked what he thought of Jimi's cover of his song said, 'He played the living crap out of the song.'
I saw Jimi Hendrix perform this song in concert in 1968 in Kansas City. If you haven’t done it already suggest All Along the Watch Tower otherwise House Burning Down.
The Maui show was fraught with technical issues; hauling the stage & gear up the side of the volcano, a constant 30mph wind(thus the foam on the mics), yet somehow it becomes one of the best filmed shows with Jimi obviously enjoying performing. You should watch his performance of “Machine Gun” with the Band Of Gypsies...
I think an interesting thing about Hendrix is in alot of his interviews he is very uncomfortable with praise, he often almost rebukes it, he was also very critical of his own music and never thought it was good enough
As u can see the neck of the guitar is on the right that mean he is a left handed guitar player and as u can see he is playing on a right handed guitar that mean he plays all notes an chord in the opposite way of playing them and even in 1970 camera existed even if these were far bigger that now

To answer your sponge question, I read that it was very windy that day so the foam was to help with the noise. Did you know that Jimi served in the U.S. Army? Watching this video I wonder if anyone was high at this show?? Jimi did things on the guitar that no one else had done. Now I want to suggest you locate and review Stevie Vaughan's cover of this jam. Take care..............
The reason why the quality was so good then is because it was put onto 35 mil film , same as wizard of of ozz the definition is amazing but so expensive , it is a real high def format aimed at cinema's
Hi Inna I should imagine the sponge on the mic is because of the wind blowing on stage that day. Can i just correct you on the title its Voodoo chile with an 'e' . good choice tho.
Thank you Bisscute for this reaction! There are very few live recordings of Jimi with decent sound, this is one. I suggest two more performances, one studio and one live, links given below. His greatest work, I believe, is “Machine Gun” performed live at Fillmore East (New York City) in 1969. It is without equal. The second is his studio version on Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” which Dylan praised as a great transformation of the song, which was already a masterpiece. What I know, Hendrix was the very first who could pick a guitar like that, I had my favorites until I heard Hendrix for the first time and he changed all rules about what could be done. Note that there was no stadium or concert hall, they had to rent a muddy place from some farmer and there was no toilets so the place got very messy. Just as MrSteveishare point out, this was the devils music and others who came after was forced to hang Jesus crosses all over themself before they got accepted by the "good" people.
Thank you very much for watching guys!

Wild Thing (1967) (Monterey Pop Festival) is how most of the world was introduced to jimi. and janis.
Thank God for Jimi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sponge in the mic is to filter the heavy wind
Isn’t it a shock to discover that performers 30 years before you were born (making some assumptions there) were the epitome of cool? Thanks again, Inna.
Jimi changed the game with the electric guitar. He took a right handed guitar, strung it upside down playing it left handed.
That wasn't a game changer, left handed guitars made up about 5% of fenders yearly output. Meaning they were very super rare. Back then if you were left handed, you just bought a right handed guitar, either played it like it was, like Albert king or dick dale or restrung it like jimi did.
@@rebeccabailey527 Albert King and Otis Rush never restrung their guitars but literally played them upside down and backwards.
Awesome Jimi! He made the 🎸 scream like it didn't know it could. 🔥 🔥 I wore this song out on my CD. Keep on rocking! 🎉❤

Jimi hendrix was the prophet of the guitar ...👌👌👌👍👍👍😍😍😍✌️✌️✌️
this is a scene from a movie called Rainbow Bridge. The sponge is to cut down the wind noise blowing into the microphone
There is a longer version of this song called just "Voodoo Chile", it's about 15 minutes long, from his "Electric Ladyland" album from 1968.
Great jam with Stevie Winwood!
Completely different song.

The "sponge" on the mic does 2 things. Cuts down on wind noise as it was windy that day, and 2 keeps spit off the mic
The foam rubber on the mic is for wind noise.
Best tune he did was machine gun live at the Filmore he takes it to a whole new level
The legendary Jimi Hendrix and an audience of hippies high on Maui Wowie (Hawaiian marijuana) and other controlled substances.
You might consider Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of this song.
This is some of the best video I've seen of Jimi. He was a once-in-a-lifetime talent, gone far too soon.

Sponge to stop feedback from all the wind blowing from the sea!
Never see such as Jimi Hendrix ever again. The people that saw him live are truly fortunate

You ought to listen to Jimmy's very psychedelic song about LSD called "Purple Haze".
Those cameramen should've faced a jury of their peers for the crimes they committed that day.
