Criss Oliva was already one of the best guitarist in the business at this time and he was still getting better, imagine where he could be and how he could play today if that motherfucking drunk didn't take his life?
I saw them at the United Center in Chicago. I had the privilege of seeing them as a opening band for Tesla🤔🤔. Absolutely mind blowing Savatage opened with a song 24 hours ago. Chris's opening riff literally gave me goosebumps. I felt sorry😥😥 for Tesla they couldn't compete with Savatage the most underrated band ever in my personal opinion.
Truly a man of culture. Streets is literal perfection from front to back. The rare concept album that doesn't let its narrative get in the way of the songs.
Criss still makes an impact on my life even after all this time....hammerjacks and all.....he was an amazing soul...and as a current in transition guitar player...i wonder what it could have been.....god bless him and his family...cause even after all these years some of us mourn him still.
When I came Tampa after high school to be a rockstar, the first live show I saw was Savatage and Nasty Savage at the Fairgrounds Expo Hall. NS was typically brutal, but I remember Savatage totally kicking my 19 year old ass around the room. They had just released "Power of the Night," and it was arguably their peak. When I joined the Army a few years later I took "Hall of the Mountain King" and "Power of the Night" with me to basic, bragging them up to everyone. I probably saw them another four or five times before Criss died at Livestock4. I was there, watching Saigon Kick and Anthrax the night he died. During a scheduled appearance the following night on 98Rock, my band Teer and I eulogized Criss and shared Savatage memories, instead of pimping our song. They were the best band ever from Tampa, and he was an elite guitarist.
Gutter Ballet, Streets and Edge of Thorns are simply MASTERPIECES...Savatage is an awesome band, Johh is an amazing voice, Criss(RIP) still is a great guitarist and its pity that this band didnt get the recognition that deserves....ofcourse i do not forget Hall of the mountain king as a great moment of the band.....
Savatage was the best!! Okay, I'm a little biased because I'm a Florida guy and I followed them since their days as Avatar. Criss absolutely kicks ass! Notice I said "kicks" instead of "kicked". Because his guitar screams from beyond.
I agree ! Wow I had privilege of sharing the stage with them in Dallas and without a doubt, nothing but professionals. The sound guy was also very talented .. I told him,it was a sat night, (hectic),, that was the best sound we have have ever had, super tight.
I know its not about Jesus Christ, but when I hear this song, and believe I can't help but to picture Jesus in bad ass leather vest rocking out to some metal! I love Metal. I hope it never dies.
I've been subscribed for ages, and I have clicked that bell. I've waiting for so many years to see the notification from my favorite metal band pop up in that upper right-hand corner. All you asked is we "Believe". I hear about all of the things Jon Oliva has been through over the past several years, and as a fan of 35+ years it breaks my heart. If somehow you see this, Jon, just know we're still out here. We DO still believe, and we're celebrating the announcement of a new Savatage record in '24!! If it is of any comfort, you have legions of fans standing behind you. Hail The Mountain King!! 🤘🤘
I'm glad I got to see them on the Gutter Ballet tour, up close and personal in San Antonio. Doc on Drums, Criss and Chris on guitar, Johnny on bass, and Jon on evil glares and wails.
Saw Savatage in 87/88 at a little club just northwest of Tampa called the Rocket Club. The tour was for the Hall of the Mountain King album. I learned about Savatage by watching a local music video channel called V32. They played videos for the title track and my favorite song on that album, 24 Hours Ago. Chris Oliva is definitely one of my favorite guitar players. Excellent band!
I hate it when most people think that being a Heavy Metal Head or getting to be a HEAVY METAL ROCKSTAR is easy. Their 100% WRONG on that. It takes Guts, Talent and a Positive Attitude. It's not Easy At All. I became a Metal Head because i inherited from my dad. Who used to play in a band in the early 80's but because because of his negativity he didn't make it through the hard test. And eventually negative rough life comes next.
The first time I saw Savatage Live was in the early 90's on the Gutter Ballet tour at the Orpheum theater in Boston. It was a double bill with Testament. Fast forward to the early 00's, I am at a the Orpheum again to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra when they were still just playing theaters. At one point in the show between songs Chris Caffery reminisces how he and Alex Skolkick had played together on that stage years ago with their respective bands which was the same show I was at! At the end of the show (The TSO Show), I stand up to leave, turn around and who is standing right behind me in the aisle? Paul O'Neil who had come out to watch the end of the show. Nobody else knew who he was. I got a chance to talk to him there for a few moments. Super down to earth guy. RIP Paul...
I went to the benefit concert they had after he died and man that was a sad sight cause John was wearing sunglasses at night cause im sure he was crying but he still rocked on
@@unclejackluminous1470 It's just amazing how cool it looks without going over the top man😍. I'd pay top money for that kit and that's no joke. I also love the red cymbal frame around it too, matches the colour scheme of the kit.
Very good video for this song. Listening to the intro to it on the album is cool. I read there was dialog between the other tracks and they were taken out by Atlantic. A masterpiece of a concept album by Savatage.
Saw them a very long time ago in a very small place called Studio 1 in Newark N.J. It's not there anymore, but what a place to see a show if you were a rocker!!!
Nostalgic song for me. First song I ever heard from these guys as kid staying up way to late listing to 98 Rock out of Tampa. No one can replace Criss, but I'm glad they are still going strong.
98 Rock Ruled the Florida west coast.. They played a small short gig at the old original Thoroughbred Music on Hillsborough Ave. My band mates introduced me to these two brothers after the gig, they all went to school together. Late 70's was a Power house of heavy metal bands in the Tampa Area..Florida at that time and through the 80's was a hotbed for Rock..
Actaully they are metal band that had an with their early albums on a lot of different genres including the early Tampa Bay death metal scene with early albums such as city beneath the surface as for sounded more power progressive metal that happened with the albums they did with zac Steven's but he never sounded right singing the classic savatage stuff such as this, and I actaully prefer jon olivas vocals for savatage.
why is so much of the actual song cut out? they did full vids for gutter ballet and when the crowds are gone, which this is shorter than, even with the spoken intro
Actually, this is where Paul O'Niel started to really influence the bands direction and if you listen to the album you can see it's progression of thought and how it parallels to Jesus Christ and the Christian God. In fact, all their albums later, including TSO have these same VERY STRONG parallels. This song was the second song on the album and was used to build up the theme of God throughout. Especially tracks like St Patrick's, Somewhere in Time and Believe.
I got to see TSO twice and it was TREMENDOUS!!! Savatage is and will always be my favorite band. Well I have two #1 favorite bands. Savatage and Pantera!
Criss had just left my house and was on his way back to the bubba live stock when he was taken from us by that ass driving drunk. That;s me (the girl) in the beginging of the video and my ol'man riding his bike. We had a fricking awesome time making this video.
Criss Oliva was already one of the best guitarist in the business at this time and he was still getting better, imagine where he could be and how he could play today if that motherfucking drunk didn't take his life?
Fuck that POS that killed Criss.
ONLY GOD KNOWS THIS...BECAUSE CRISS PLAYS IN HEAVEN...SOMEDAY WE WILL KNOW THIS TOO
Man Savatage has some of the most kick-ass songs I've ever heard
The one band I really wished I had gotten to see live.

Being in the area Tampa have got to see then so so many times live! Criss one the most underated guitarist!
Brilliant song and … WHAT A VOICE !!!
Brilliant song by a brilliant band. It is a shame that they did not get as much recognition as they should have.
The Epitome of a great heavy metal band. So many 10/10 albums... Those guys had the magic touch
