Jordy I found that a Brad point bit and drill from the front of the tree out the back works the best. The back will splinter but then I use a countersink bit that makes pushing the light through easier. I have also made sawmill slab wood spirits with lights through beard also Santa themed spirits are cool especially with lights that synch to music.i used a barn stain from Walmart to dye/stain. I used scraps from a 1x4 that had a made in Sweden sticker from Home Depot. It splinters a little easier than pine when chainsaw carved. Be careful breathing the anniline dye that you are using as fumes are toxic. I used it in the past on gun stocks that I carved. My daughter wants to put lights through the beard on a birdhouse! Love your creativity, can't wait for your next video.
@CarvingFusion sorry I didn't notice this was an old video! Never claimed to be a sharp crayon! I am from Southern Indiana and have carved for 30 years now. I wish I had kept track of how many pumpkins and Christmas trees made! Almost depressing to think about! I'm starting to feel it more everyday! Keep on carving!
I do Shou Sugi Ban as well. I like to take very waterd down metallic paint on wet wood. Metallic part of paint settles in cracks and crevices of the wood, looks amazeing
Jordy, don't ever burn anything you don't like, give it to someone you don't like and let them have to deal with it. They can't trash it, because you may stop by some day and see it is not there.
I think it is a different cut of the log. Grain on the inside of a log is different than a board on the outside..maybe, what do I know I'm an electrician not a sawyer..
Number 3 today Jordy. I like the heavy duty wood burn. I saw someone else do that, and they used a rotating brush thing. It really made the grain of the wood stand out a lot. Made it look really neat. As far as putting the white frosting on the edge of the branches goes, would it help if after putting on the green dye, you left it for a day to dry? Then put the white on the branch tips. It probably wouldn't bleed so much? Like you say, they turned out pretty good. Definately worth the effort. Thanks. Rick.
Great job on the trees. I've just gotten started. I'm in Ontario, what kind of prices are you getting there? Hope all is well, best wishes from Wasaga Beach ⛱️
I bought the same kind dye from Lee Valley about three years . Works great expect if gives me a sore throat if I don't wear a respiratory . Don't know why . I painted the snow on mine to . They look great hope you sell them . Qui Qui .
Hey Jordy, Happy Thanksgiving ! Those tree's turned out pretty good and you've using the idea I'm using for dyeing the trees and putting snow on the edges, I'll send some pics when I get time. When you make the base of the tree, what I do is take a scrap piece from the wood you've cut and use it as a template and measure either side of it on the base of the trunk then cut inside of those lines about 1 inch up the trunk, then do the same on the cross piece and they should fit perfectly and flush ( as they say " measure twice and cut once " ) , I hope you can understand what I've said I know I don't understand myself some times hehe ! Take care. 🙏
How much did you sell these for, on average? Jc and I’m sure you can get more now cas your known but at the beginning starting out what’s a fair price? I understand if you don’t wanna say it’s cool I’m just learning as I go and I’m building up to many carvings around the house so I gotta get some sold and wanna be fair is all
