Donauinsel im Winter

The Danube Island - also known as the "Island" for short - is a 21.1 km long and up to 250 m wide artificial island built between 1972 and 1988 between the Danube and the New Danube, which lies a few meters below, in the urban area of ​​Vienna and Klosterneuburg . The right side of the island forms the left bank of the Danube, which was dammed by a few meters near the end of the island at the Freudenau power plant (1999, head 8.6 m). The island is part of Vienna's flood protection and, together with the Old and New Danube, also serves as a local recreation area in the Vienna Danube area. The Danube Island Festival takes place there every year . While the north and south parts of the island are designed close to nature, the middle third of the island was designed like a park.
