It is a sin and God can set you free from it. You're right, we only have one life. We have to spend it honouring and loving God with all of our hearts, not this world, not ourselves. Jesus never created us to be with the same sex. Jesus said that marriage is between a man and a woman and that is the perfect will of God and it's beautiful.
