Listening from WVC, UT!
Every single episode, for going on 4 years now, I never miss. And I often listen up to even 4 times per episode, per week.
My point is, as a lifelong student of the Gospel, this is my first place I come each week.
I can't thank you enough for continuing this podcast. The world needs you, your expert guests, and the testimony and content explanation every week.
This episode is no exception.
Thank you Bro. Dirkmaat, for your faith building explanation broken down in simple terms. I've shared with my whole family and our flames of testimony have been lit, and we've felt the Spirit testify. (My kids are 13 & 9.) I don't have words to explain my gratitude. A simple Thank you will hopefully suffice. THANK YOU!
HURRAH FOR ISRAEL!!!
Hello from Sydney, Australia! Thank you so much, Hank, John and Gerrit-I love the podcast! This explanation of the translation process using a hat makes perfect sense due to the concept of contrast sensitivity. I am an eye surgeon and regularly use an operating microscope. To increase contrast sensitivity to allow greater discernment of structures through the microscope, I can either darken the room or use an extendable tube on the microscope's eyepieces to allow light to enter my eyes without distraction from surrounding light. Thus allowing more excellent depth perception and the ability to distinguish structures from a hazy background. I can imagine that the seer stones would have had a different refractive index, which causes the light to split at its surfaces like through a glass prism. When reading through a prism, you will notice letters magnified, and the edges may blur. Increasing contrast sensitivity helps the eyes see better.
This is hands down my favorite podcast!! I’m so grateful you’ve kept going with it and now Voices of the Restoration is such an awesome bonus!
Thank you for the insights about the seer stones. I don't read scriptures on my own as "slowly" as i should,. Your broadcast helps me do that. By the way, I'm listening from South Korea. Cell phones work kind of like the Liahona, with the writing changing from time to time.
This is such a revelation to me. I did feel uncomfortable about hearing about a hat and seer stone. Dr Dirkmaat has cleared away the fog for me! Thanks so much. Plenty of food for thought!! 😀
Too bad he's wrong. The only true eyewitnesses to the process, Joseph and Oliver, repeatedly in writing affirmed that the translation came from the plates using the Nephite interpreters (spectacles or Urim & Thummim) which came with the plates. All other sources are late, secondhand or otherwise problematic and unreliable.
Ummm he got arrested for using it to lie to Josiah Stowell about seeing treasure in the ground. It’s connected to folk magic, drawing magic circles, sacrificing sheep to break the magical charms on the treasure. Slippery treasure. That’s why the Church waited until they had $250 Billion in tithing before actually admitting to it in 2015

What's absolutely amazing is how the Solomon Spaulding narrative still has traction. It's shelf life has been super impressive.
🇲🇽 No disrespect to your guests. Having watched and listened to these podcasts throughout the previous four years I must admit that this recording is my favorite of all. Raised in the Church and a teacher I have learned and now better understand the coming forth of the Book or Mormon. Thank you Dr. Dirkmaat and the comedy duo of Hank & John 🥰
When I was young, Joseph Smith was called Gazelem in some parts of D&C's old publications here in Brazil. They changed that some years ago.
These 3 are the dream team!
This episode was amazing!
Thank you Dr. Dirkmaat for sharing your knowledge and faith!
Thanks!!! This was so great 👍
Wonderful explanations! Thank you so much, thank you!!! ❤🇨🇦
Thank you so much for this podcast, never have I understood the D&C than this year. I love you guys your words are penetrating even in Uganda. God Bless.
Just ran across your channel. Much thanks, will be a regular now. 👍👍👍
I think Joseph's discretion about the process is one of the reasons God could trust him. If there's anyone who has a huge desire to explain himself its Joseph but like Mary he kept all these things and pondered them in his heart.
I love listening to Gerrit Dirkmaat, thanks for having him as your guest 😊
Wow this was amazing!! Thank you all so much!
Listening from Oklahoma!!
I absolutely love bro Dirkmaat! His podcast is amazing!
Thank You so much! This was wonderful! I love the Book of Mormon even more and a greater testimony of the Restoration!
Thanks for the beautiful lesson! ❤
What a wonderful episode! Thank you!
This great episode got me to o connect how God reveals truth written on objects: a seer stone, a Liahona, and writing on 2 stones (the 10 Commandment tablets). Thank you!
When I'm at the bus stop & need to see my phone screen, I lean over into my scooter & put coat, sweater or towel to block the sunlight.
So Joseph's most convenient "tool" of using his hat makes perfect sense to me. ❤
Excellent podcast. Thank you. Any way voices of the restoration can be put into Spanish also? My wife would really enjoy this in Spanish. She has really enjoyed everything else you’ve had translated. Thanks again.
oh my GOSH Joseph Smith's New England accent lollllll love it
I don't really care about stones or hats or writing in the sky. I just care about Joseph interpreting the book, no matter how we got it .
it does make a big difference. If you do not accept that Joseph and Oliver told the truth about the translation, how can you ask anyone to believe that they also told the truth about the restoration of the priesthood or temple keys, events to which, like the translation of the Book of Mormon, Joseph and Oliver were also the only eyewitnesses?
How did Joseph’s “treasure becomes slippery” from 1824 treasure digs make it into the Book of Mormon in 1830? How interesting that chronologically lines up. Folk magic in the BoM, the more you know!😀
That's exactly how I learned. 56yo Indiana. Always taught about seer stones and tools.
Love it
When they're called, the had been ordinary boys before . Samuel was twelve. David was a young man. Mormon was ten. What if the brother you go to church with, all of a sudden, was :chosen'
Do seer stones play any role in the restored church post Joseph Smith?
Boosting this question. Maybe someone who knows something will answer? I for one would be very interested in knowing. I've been wondering for a while why only the brown stone was shown, and not the white stone. It'd be interesting to know if it is still used on occasion, depending on the adeptness of the Prophet or Apostle who goes to use it.
Why did the actual plates really have to be there on the table? It doesn’t sound like he used them as much as the stones.
You answered my question to my satisfaction! Thank you so much for this podcast, I have learned so much from you and your guests!
I think it was more important for those involved to have a physical witness that there was something tangible.
I understand that most of the time the plates were being translated that they remained wrapped up in whatever fabric it was that Joseph used to carry and protect them. Is that true?
No. Joseph reported that the translation came from the plates using the Jaredite/Nephite "Urim & Thummim" interpreters which came with the plates (see JS-H 1:35). The idea that the plates were covered during the translation comes from a supposed interview with Emma by her son Joseph III published in 1879 after Emma's death. This same document claims Joseph had no involvement with plural marriage, and cannot be relied on. In fact, only a few years later Joseph III repudiated the stone-in-the-hat theory after doing extensive research. This suggests that the 1879 document was not based on what Emma said, as she was too sick at the time, but rather was written by Joseph III based on what information he had at the time but which he revised after he studied what his father actually said, which gave Joseph III reliable information. One can only hope that historians like in this podcast will have the same honesty and respect for Joseph Smith Jr. that his son had, and accept that Joseph (and Oliver) told the truth about how the Book of Mormon was translated rather than repeating this stone-in-the-hat narrative which contradicts Joseph and Oliver.
You are the best Garret! & funny. I'm laughing all the time listening to this guy. And learning.
Just the Urim and Thummim as Joseph, Oliver, and the Lord noted.
Urim and Thummim is a generic term for revelatory device. Read D&C 130 about other ways U&T is used.
Is the stone placed in a place of darkness... why Joseph put the stone in a hat so he could see the words! ie... Joseph looks into a hat to see the translation? You answered this and gave in much clearer then I accepted this. Sadly, this has caused someone very dear to me to step back from the Church.
I'm very sorry to hear about the person who left the Church, especially as the information in this video is not correct. Unfortunately, there are many people who have left the Church due to the false information perpetuated by videos like this one. Joseph and Oliver always testified that the Book of Mormon was translated from the plates using the Urim & Thummim interpreters which came with the plates. See JS-H 1:35 and the new book "By Means of the Urim & Thummim" which gives the full history in context.
