Because of the slight increase in carp being caught with serious mouth damage, which they are putting down to the use of barbless hooks. However, management have said that if you are an experienced angler you may still use barbless!!!!!!!!
In my opinion they should ban the barb i personally dont own a barb you dont need a barb to fish any type of water i fish the river wye i have never used a barbed hook on any water what so ever and never will I'm surprised watching des shipp telling people this is what hook to use c'mon des you dont need to fish a barbed hook anywhere and you know it des Alien
You would be surprised how many competition anglers are using barbed hooks. If it is not allowed, of course they will use barbless. I do not fish on competitions, and only using barbed hooks on big river with live maggot. But still there is a reason why they choose barbed hook over the barbless most of the cases in competitions. I do not lose more fish with barbless hooks compared to barbed ones, but I can understand if someone believes that using barbed hooks will help him/her land more fish.
