Mauviel ( whom I have met both in France and London) is a family business very near where I live in Normandy. The town is called Villedieu-Les_Poëles. This little town was once famous for its artisanal copperware. The people of the town are called 'Les Sourdins' because in the previous centuries the copper wares were beaten inside yards, called 'cours' and the hammering noise was so loud that it made people deaf 'sourds' hence Sourdins. The town's name includes Poèles, in copper of course, which means frying pans. God's town of the frying pans is its translated name! It is a lovely little town, untouched like others during the last war, and is also famous for its artisanal bells making. The foundry can be visited and the bells are huge and magnificent. They are exported world wide and the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris had 7 or 8 new ones in 2012. I was there when the convoy left for Paris, and it was a sight to behold! It is on you Tube. Last century they made lace, by hand, and very fine lace it was too. The town was exempt of taxes in the 12th century by Henri De Beauclec, therefore it attracted numerous artisans. It has a huge link to the St John Hospitaliers and every 4 years the town is decorated and many hospitaliers gather in the town and march through the streets. Great spectacle!
The stoneware multi purpose crocks are such a find! The medium and small lidded canister are precious! Love the left handled coffee pitcher just a classic style! You are getting your French traditional style down pat- our favorite has to be the hammered copper pitcher- just exquisite. We are delighted to come along on your educational adventures- hope you continue on your visits with friends- happy travels ☺️
I love everything the two of you found. What a haul, indeed! I particularly like the stoneware in the lighter shades and also the beautiful copper pans and the hammered pitcher. The prices are incredible! Thank you for taking us along!
The copper tray with baking dish is for serving maybe vegetables or a cake. Love the copper, beautiful! Love everything….enjoy your precious finds. Thank you for sharing ❤️
My favorite item was Manon's big soup tureen and platter with the blue birds on them!! Second, I like all things white like pitchers, bowls and tureens. You are so lucky to have such exciting places to shop for used items. I would go crazy buying everything in my sight!!
Treasure hunting is even more fun when you do it with a friend whose taste is so similar to your own taste. Your stoneware mustard pots were a big score. I collect those as well. Love that you bought the covered casserole dish. I thought it was the same as your pattern. My favorites among your friend's purchases were the 2 pictures. What a great trip you had. Thanks for taking us along.
Love all of your finds! Thank you for taking us along with you. I saw a wooden small table with a white marble top. I wish I could have for my bathroom renovation. It would be perfect to put a vessel sink on top and use it as a bathroom vanity.🥰
The 3 mauviel pots were truly a find and a bargain. Those pots now a days each sell in the hundreds($US). I have been using tin lined copper for many decades. Yes low flame, but that is all that is necessary...They cook evenly and are basically non-stick for frying. Last yr. I had quite a few pots retinned. The price depends upon the size/area so at least $100 for a small frying pan. Most people in the US have them for display only, quel dommage. I do not shine mine because it does not affect the way they cook and I don't have time. The tin does get dark usually due to some acid...like lemon. They are wonderful for sautéeing and frying, but use cast iron for searing because that requires a high heat. Grab any more Mauviel that you see just make sure the copper does not show through the tin...then it would need to be retinned.
So glad someone bought that blue and white platter and the matching tureen. So many amazing items for incredible prices. The copper pitcher that you bought has a finish that is called hammered copper. I would have gone nuts in those stores and would have been in heaven. Always happy to tag along on your broncante treasure hunts. Un jour j'espere venire avec vous.
ah yes...I scored 4 of those mustard crocks over here across the pond (the states) and I was THRILLED~ Great finds Marloes! I LOVE the coffee pot with the side handle! I also love copper...I've been collecting for a while now. Thank you for taking us along Brocante shopping with your friend! 🙂

The dish you show at the end with roses on, I think was part of a series one could get at a range of shops called Casino. You didn't buy them. As you bought your groceries you would get points and so many points meant a plate, etc. My grandmother owned some. I'm not exactly sure it's exactly this design but it looks very much like it.
This is a Wonderful episode! I can just fantasize that I’m walking with you thru these shops. I know what you like and can always tell when you’re going to pick something up 😄. I love the same styles and the pottery. I have a question, can the pottery pieces be used in an oven or microwave? Thanks and see you again soon. ❤❤❤
That is a good question. I am not sure to be honest as I don’t know to which temperature they can be used. Maybe someone else in our community here knows?

What amazing finds Marloes❣️ how far is Manon’s cabin from your property. I’m planning to visit Burgundy sometime in October and thinking of staying at your rental place and would love to check out her place and the shops. Thank you for sharing 🤎
some time ago i was at the Emmaus Magny-Cours. Big place close to the Nevers one. At the church in Lurcy-Levis you find also a nice brocante. Thanks for the usfull tips.
Regarding the copper casserole holder - should have a white ceramic casserole dish that fits perfectly into the copper holder. After baking in the white ceramic dish, you can put the hot dish on the table in its copper holder to pass around & not need a trivet.
Margoes did you find a difference from he Brocantes near Manon's area versus where you live? I love all of the finds but I have a real love for the cheese molds and the Limoges plates. I am visiting in May and may have to try to find these places although getting things home to Canada is problematic! Cheers Kellie
Well honestly there are so many differences between places but it also is just a matter of luck. I haven’t found a single one of these cheese molds in five years anywhere else… Sometimes you’re just having a lucky day. Going to ressourceries and Emmaüs is hit and miss as it’s not curated. I’d suggest you go to those first and if you don’t find what you’re looking for try a few real brocantes. Their offer is curated and tiu’re much more likely to find these kinds of items there. You’ll pay more, but you’re paying for the work they have done sourcing and selecting the items. Especially for things that are more rare you can go to 20 Emmaüs and won’t find it. At brocante and antique shops you probably will. Enjoy your trip!
I'm so envious of the Brocantes in France, living in Mexico they don't seem to understand that we might like rustic things and old crockery, they have clay things used here even now, but very low fire so they break too easily. 😒
Love your tour of these special places. I am curious to know if you can tell me the name of the stoneware plate at 3:19 in the video and the name of the small blue stoneware pitcher at 14:29. I have a similar style of pitcher that I was told is French but I know little about it. Thank you
Yes the blue pitcher and the plates is what they call “vaisselle alsacienne”. It’s from the Alsace region in the east (which has been part of Germany in history and then French again) and is quite well known and some people collect it. They still make these colorful pottery items in that region today. So it’s definitely French! If you want to learn more, take a picture of it using the Google Lens app. It will show you similar items online and often it will find a website for you where they share more information about the item.
