I think the craziest thing about the seed vault is the fact that you see NO borders while inside. All these little boxes full of seeds next to each other. North Korea's boxes right next the USA boxes with no fear of war. It's kinda heart warming in a way.
I wish every city around the United States and around the world would pick a single thing to focus on for the future Technologies and preservation of her.. Would that be cool if every city has something special that they did and the government helped to fund it.
The question of who "owns" such an important fail-safe is important. At 3:20 she talks about this briefly. Did the Norwegian government entirely fund the project or only provide the seed money?
Why not build the seed vault in a mountain that is naturally minus 18? That way they could save on energy costs, equipment expenses, and not have to worry about equipment failures or energy shortages.
"...I did this while i was in Svalbard, which is 800 miles from the North Pole, super super cool..." Am I the only one who noticed the unintentional pun here or...? :D
"In the Arctic Circle" is not the correct description to use. It's not technically wrong but as i will come back to there is a much better description of this area that is normal to use. The Arctic Circle is a circle of latitude on the map. North of the Arctic Circle, the sun is above the horizon for twenty-four continuous hours at least once per year (and therefore visible at midnight) and below the horizon for twenty-four continuous hours at least once per year. This region is called the ARCTIC.
I miss when it was just Trace talking about cloning, aliens, light, and other topics. It was relaxing and interesting. Now it's people I don't know who aren't easy to hear and are more about a company or project than an interesting topic.
So we know that we are damaging the environment, which is where our food comes from, and instead of putting money into technology that would reduce our negative impact there are private companies saving THEIR seeds for later when our natural food is not edible anymore (it can happen really quickly with radiation, for example). When a huge corporation like Monsanto spend money, it's not to help humanity in general. It's to make more and more money. Now I think that saving plants, especially those we eat, is as important as saving animal species and this seed bank is a good thing but if we ever rely on it some asshole will totally corrupt the whole thing and we will end up relying on a very small group of people to feed ourselves. Guess what happens next.
Why we need this when there's Monsanto and the GM food? Inb4 something does happen and they use the seeds and it turns out to have Monsanto's GM food trace then gets sue for using Monsanto's property
Kind of funny/ironic that Derek of Veritasium also went to the Svalbard Seed Vault recently as well. I wonder if they got the idea from his adventure, if it was just a coincidence, or if there is some kind of 'marketing' campaign for the seed vault... Anybody know?
I believe they like to make corrections to "rumour videos" produced by other UA-cam uploaders. The Svalbard Seed Vault has been included in many _"xx most secret places in the world"_ videos based on conspiracy theories rather than research. You would think that such important endeavours would have a mirror of each seed in a space station. What if that location was nuked then you can't use it.
I like the idea of a cathedral to science. Makes me happy. Great video as always, Trace. Keep up the good work. May the Almighty Player [God] bless you.
Because you can go absolutely nowhere if you only speak norwegian. Plus since we're such a small country much of our media, such as music, film, news etc, comes from other places

Sounds like the hunger games.
+Derrick Barney that's what I was thinking lol
+Derrick Barney I wonder if the districts system would be a good system of government

that was amazing! I love that Norway is funding the preservation of seeds.
In short: For an impending apocalypse (eg. Nuclear Winter, giant meteor, etc.)
... or the bancrupcy of monsanto. :P
Hi,or the"Trumpoclypse"!Thanks

Good interview.

We should have one in every country.

The Norwegian accent is strong with this one
Have you HEARD Petter Solberg? Or Thorbjørn Jagland? This is nothing.

This is too cool!
It must have been freaking amazing to visit this place
It goes to the center to the earth with those advanced humans down there!!
This makes me happy, what a great idea.
I've subscribed to so many channels I don't even know if a channel has uploaded the same video twice or not.
I miss when it was just Trace talking about cloning, aliens, light, and other topics. It was relaxing and interesting. Now it's people I don't know who aren't easy to hear and are more about a company or project than an interesting topic.
like this episode. very interesting.
NORGE! NORGE! NORGE!!!
I may go to Svalbard in November. Even though I live in Norway, it's so freaking expensive.

Did you do something to the sound?
I feel like it's better.

that was awesome!
Really fascinating! Didn't even know xD
Hi Trace, can you have her being back the fabled "HotDog Tree"Please!:)Thanks.
They did this before they rolled out GMO seeds whose seeds don't regenerate farmers have to always buy new seeds every planting season
why not make a vault for future human safety? (vault tec)
Happy Eid everyone 🌷
Because we're not as dumb as we seem.
Nah still pretty dumb
shooulda rolled off some of the low end on her mic sir.
Where are the fuckin' bee banks, ya nerds?!?
Now if we can keep it away from evil corporations we will be golden.
What is going to pollinate crops in the future, bees are dying everywhere.
I like the idea of a cathedral to science. Makes me happy.
Great video as always, Trace. Keep up the good work.
May the Almighty Player [God] bless you.
same shirt man 👍👍
she is great. it is cool.
there's a vault like this in las vegas
YOU FOUND MY VAULT! ~.~
Officially the 34th video DNEWS has made about the seed vault. Can we please talk about HAARP?
All-time MVP: Norwegian government ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
hell i duno why are you asking me? probababbly something to do with the isolation and the cold.
Count how many times she said security.
But no GM crops stored there for no reason.
Why would they be?
Just gotta keep ISIS out of that seed vault. Theyre getting pretty crafty these days
ISIS would freeze to death long before they reached Svalbard.
I prefer picknmix seeds for my cannabis seed purchases tho.
but no banana seeds
saw this on discovery channel
does any body know if cannabis seeds are in one of those vaults?
yes. hemp is actually a quite important and useful crop.
oh, Veritasium.
Tbt futurama
bc tissues just aren't enough anymore
Considering those candidates from the current US federal election, the end of the world isn't that far at all.
do they have bananas threre????
you need a mic
Oh snap! She said climate change! Cue the rightwing anger!
thats cool. coool. haha. score.
glhf
her voice is hard to listin to
Norwegians speak great English. Why is that?
Because you can go absolutely nowhere if you only speak norwegian. Plus since we're such a small country much of our media, such as music, film, news etc, comes from other places
Oh and because we're rich we travel a lot, which ties back to the not being able to go places with only norwegian
She talks with her teeth closed a lot. It's pretty annoying
wot mad bro ?
Cause she is talking English 🙂
+Shaun Mitchell okay calm down
I Hate Everything what
+Shaun Mitchell nothng
