Video footage for Number 2 is not Foxwood, that is the end of Kingsway West area. My former primary school, Our Lady’s RC was there before being demolished and, back in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, I walked all of those streets and they were tidy. What you’ve shown there are some houses, flats and streets that are looking a bit scruffy. All they need is for the occupants to do a tidy up of the gardens and some paint and repair. Council also needs to resurface the road and pathways too- like many across the country. I moved from York back in 1994, but I often visit my family. The areas you’ve shown are nothing in comparison to other areas in towns and cities across the country. York is actually a very decent city to live in.
I was at university in York in the 90's and loved the place. Lived off Huntington Road for a couple of years - almost every week a house was broken into, but thankfully we were not affected. In my final year we lived off Haxby Road, (Scaife Street) in a small, three story terrace, which had not been decorated or had much work since the 70s. We were the first tenants not to have a break in in over 10 years! There were areas and pubs the university told us to avoid at all costs. Walking along Eldon Terrace was known as 'running the gauntlet'. We had a charity sports social one evening where women's teams dressed as men and we dressed in drag. I was chased along Eldon Terrace in a mini skirt and heels. I laughed about it when I got to the bar, but later heard that a couple of lads were seriously beaten up by a group of youths on the road.
I live in Chapelfields it really isn't as bad as it's made out to he. Crime activity has been calm now for a few years and I've lived here for all my life I'm 25. Sure it has it's rough moments but it's not often and its usually calm.
I have walked past those 3 blocks of council flats in Clifton North loads of times, and I had no idea that was a ‘bad’ area, they are at the end of a really lovely tree lined road of really nice big houses, There is a reason houses around there cost 350k, because its not really that bad. To be honest none of the ‘bad’ areas in York are bad compared to London where I come from, a few tracksuits and that’s about it
Yeah, I said somewhere else, these are the worst areas in York, statistically, but York is one of the nicest areas I’ve been to in recent years. I was actually there for 4 days for a conference and loved it there.

Actually had no idea Clifton North was considered a "bad" area. A little bit of insight is I used to be one of the few drivers for TIER (the now-gone scooter rental service in York) for 3 years and often had to scout around that area at night looking for abandoned scooters: never once had a problem even going down various dodgy alleys. Did have to pick them up in Chapelfields every so often too: that was always a risk but generally kids would keep to themselves and just shout abuse from afar.

Compared to other cities in the UK, York has absolutely no problems. It hasn't. It's really safe. I've worked in Doncaster, Hull, London and pit villages. Saying York is rough is like saying riding in a roller is bumpy and uncomortable. York is very safe. Thats why its so expensive to live there. Theres no excess housing to put people in, all social housing is full with working people. I grew up in Foxwood when it was apparently a lot worse than it was today. As one who lives in York, none of these areas are really bad. Sure, Chapelfields can be "lively", and there are drug issues in several parts of York, but a lot of the people in these areas are fine. My experience of living In high rise flats was temperamental communal lifts and the occasional loud music from neighbors having bloc parties late at night that’s the crux of living in accommodation like that so it’s very common .
Selby didn’t come up among the top of the police official stats. But I’m always interested in what locals know or think are the worst areas as that kind of intel is often more reliable; and there are probably more unreported crimes in those areas!
Aggressive youths grow up then move away so I wouldn’t let that put me off.
