Yeah, was thinking the same thing, though less charitably. I remember plain green painted bases and also sand I think it was painted green to absolute fail to look like grass xD Ah that was Rogue Trader and 2nd edition :3 3rd edition brought along a new unpleasant basing tactic: Excessive static grass.
straken kills 2 terminators in one combat phase and then a mass of terminators surrounding him prefer to stay away from him, what a tribute to catachan
That was a purely epic battle. It looked to go one way, then it looked definitively in other direction, then anyone's game. In the end, the outcome was still teetering in either direction. What a blast it was to watch this battle. Thank you guys for a fantastic report.
Awesome batrep. These tight games really are the best, and it's fantastic to see the astra militarum on the channel as well - I will always have a soft spot for the humble guardsman in a game dominated by space marines, daemons and aliens. Speaking of which, Straken turning into Rambo and killing all those Terminators was definitely a highlight I won't soon forget. Sly Marbo would be proud. :P Great work as always Winters, keep it up.
This is the most entertaining batrep I've watched so far! Imperial Guard vs Space Marines was a hell of a lot more of an interesting match up than I thought it was going to be. Almost makes me want to start a IG army.
@Mike Bison neither does the Valkyrie, Im very confused what edition their playing because none of what they are saying is right on the movement and shoot penalties to the super heavies or flyers.
@@longmeaderulez where can I find the errata? I looked at the astra militarum errata and couldnt find the 'no -1 to hit when firing heavies'. I'm a lil ticked that my valkryie is hitting on 5s!
You tell me the Guard was going to join Chaos, but we both know, Winters, that instead what really happened was they were charging bayonet first against the Chaos forces and the Space Marines that fought them were just Alpha Legion undercover.
Right Wing of the Nut House *coughs* I guess there were Ork snipers waiting for the Guard in the landing zone...*coughs and runs to hide from the local Inquisitor*
"steel behemoth:this model does not suffer the penalty to hit rolls for moving and firing Heavy weapons. This model can Fall Back in the Movement phase and still shoot and/or charge during its turn. It can also still fire its weapons if enemy units are within 1" of it (but only its twin heavy bolter or twin heavy flamer can target units that are within 1: of it - its other guns must target other units)..."
I think these guys play once per edition and just assume each editions rules carry over to the next, because there are MULTIPLE things they've both gotten horrendously wrong throughout this game.
Malal im replying to your 5 month old reply to a 1 year old comment to a 2 year old video. This is one of their first battles in 8th, as they say, so there were a lot of rules they hadn’t learned yet
So happy to see guard on the channel! I love running bullgryns, but I would always take them with the shock mauls and have a mixed unit of slab shields and brute shields- makes them a lot more killy and survivable.
That was epic! Well done to the 13th for hanging on in there - I never thought they would have lasted 7 turns of all that dakka. (Hope they scrape up enough of Chaplin Snow to pin a medal on him)
Great report as always. As Talis points out below consider surrounding your enemies when you can so they can't fall back. You will lose some models in the resulting close combat but normally it is better than being shot at. If you had piled into Stracken on turn 2 you would have lost less Terminators the following round and probably killed Stracken with the extra hammernator attacks in the IGs fight phase. It is a tactic that has served me well recently so thought I'd share in case it helps
that and the incorrect ruling on mega super heavies moving and shooting and the vaklyrie moving shooting, either these guys play once an edition or they don't ever read the rules.
Dude huge respect on your description of the battle! Best part the description on bad dice rolls! It is pulling the listener into the real battle! And overall very nice work!
This looks so bloody fun. Got the First Strike set and the 8th Ed rule book on the way. Can’t wait to get well into this game in the Fall. Love the vids man! Thank you.
THIRTEEN! Nice and close - thought you were going to buy it when you showed the two super heavies - at the offset, but then he fled the Hammers, which I think cost him the game. Was a little disappointed Saul didn't show his blade off, but I suppose all great generals should be leading from the rear. Love the use of the named characters. Helps with the suspension. Good work as always!
Love seeing your chapter and characters in action, great batrep as usual Winters. I'm working on throwing together a custom Crimson Fists captain to use their relic.
I remember when Terminators rolled their save on 2D6. Even Lascannons, heavy plasma's, and Krak missiles, all with -6 saves, weren't guaranteed a kill.
The 13th stands victorious again! Just starting out in the hobby, and I discovered this channel the day I bought my first bits. Inspired me to go the route of my own chapter rather than something established. I love your videos. Thank you!
Hah; I was practically shouting at the screen at about 1:30:00: "CHARGE HIM! Charge that scout! This is 8th edition, your tanks can run people over without having to sacrifice all their shooting, now!" Your 3 attacks may be hitting on sixes but they'll be wounding on threes. You've got about a one-in-eight, maybe one-in-ten chance of killing him for no downside. For that matter, I would've had that gunship charge the razorbacks while it was at it. You won't kill it, but you'll stop it from shooting the lascannon. Think of it as your gunship clipping the target with its wing just to disrupt their targeting before flying away.
Played a Shadowsword yesterday, got absoloutley massacred by a squad of terminators with storm shields, not a single wound from two all out volleys got through and it actually ended up doing more damage with adamantium tracks.
They actually do this in real life sometimes. Before nvg s and IR. They painted white orange or red circles on tanks to see where the barrel was at night.
Focus fire Winters! Confirm your kills! Seriously, unless you know you have a good chance of deleting a baneblade, nuke the russes and finish nuking them.
35:30 how did that man forget about using his Hellhound on the infantry squad and focus all of the storm lords fire into the dreadnought/ terminators??
yo, 1:04:45 with you 3 inch pile in, you can encircle the Yarrick model so it can't escape since you can't fall back through models just as you can't charge through models. Also, it protects your units from getting shot in the next turn as they are still in combat.
Talis17118 Good call. I would also have done the same with the two Terminator units fighting Stracken earlier in the game. Winters lost 7 terminators to shooting and a Stracken charge in the next turn, in close combat I think he would have lost 4 and killed Stracken with the extra hammer attacks.
You know I rather like idea of warhammer, I have a few miniatures, and I played a few short games. But the thing that kills it for me is that they are commodities thus making all the books and what not big toy catalogues. I wish instead there was no gap over ownership between those who wanted to play the game and the production of the minis and rule books (the same goes for about everything else). Like people could just 3D print all the models they wanted. Or at least a good deal.
I think the not having WYSIWYG on the stormraven messed with you Winters haha. By 27 minutes in you are back to shooting assault cannons on it instead of the hurricane bolters
hurricane bolter on the flyer! lol question: why did you not pile in and surround the guard commander at 52:25 he would not of been able to fall back and your terminators would have been safe from shooting as locked in combat.
Iron hands chapter tactic works against wounds taken not the hit so it's not Like a invun. If the attack is 2 damage you'd have to roll 2 dice to save.
Winters, you should maybe have piled into the super heavies since they would have had to move to get to shoot and that would have given them -1 to hit. Very exciting game though! I have like 30 minutes left and all seems lost for the 13th - but with 30 minutes left, can that really be true!?
Really liked the terrainin this battle. I'm seeing far too many 40k table with sparse terrain, which totally takes away any strategy of positioning and movement and quite often simply means that the first one to go wins. Tables have to be like this one. Gamewise and also for the visuals.

Great game winters. Just a quick one. I thought stormravens have power of the machine spirit so they can move and fire their heavy weapons without penalty.(So none of that hitting on 4+ stuff)
Amazing battle report. I enjoy your army as well, despite its color scheme does not include reversed omegas. :) But can you reroll failed hits rolls of 3 for hammerminators? I thought all modifiers are applied after rerolls and in this case you can reroll only 1 and 2. Not trying to teach you playing the game, as you follow "the most important rule better than I do. Just want to clarify some tricky moments.
What an intense game. I liked that every single man counted. Those scouts went through hell. They are space marine material you should promote the survivors! Am I missing something or why was there no roll for the game to continue in the end?
The shadowsword and the stormlord were beautiful. Moreover, what happend if you put 6 heavy weapon squads of mortar (3 mortars per squad) into the stormlord ? (That cost only 162 points).
“Do you want to reroll to shoot better?”
“No”
“Do you want to spend 2 CP on a lone character to get into melee first?”
“Yes”
