Fascinating: Judo is such a fast sport but the refs move incredibly slowly to get a better angle (and god forbid they never bend over to get a better look)
No need for corner refs, refs just need to fcking move around. They always walk around so slowly, no wonder they miss half the action and so many people that pass out stay that way a few seconds more than needed.

Corner refs used to be a standard thing. Not quite sure when they got rid of them, and you are quite right about refs being lousy at judging the ground game. But this is elite level Judo. They are in there to win. I can assure you that none of the participants got a permanent injury. You may understand why leg locks are banned. But I suspect that most of you commenting come from BJJ, and I honestly find it way more reckless that an art promotes "choking out" people in street fights.

Judo ref miss so many taps! And sometimes even if one person goes to sleep!
The issue is that the refs are too busy looking important in their suits, standing stiff and majestic. If they would do their job properly and move their asses a bit faster to look at the person in a submission from a better angle, taps would not be missed so often. But no! This could ruin their looks.
Seriously a german judoka got choked unconscious last olympic games, because the ref was standing behind them and was veeeeryyy slooooowly (but gracefully) walking around to the other side...
Sometimes it is hard to see if a person is still conscious. Refs in judo are raerly bending over trying to get a better look at the person in a choke hold (1:52 is a reare example). Most of them prefer to hover over the action even if this means the person in the choke remains out for several more seconds....
Kai Jäger I think that Judo refs aren’t as bad as you say they are. They are very high level and have an extremely big rivalry in their ranks especially in Europe and Asia (it’s actually very difficult to ref big events and you will be kicked out of the higher events if you don’t perform). You are correct that some judo refs seem to be worse in Newaza, but on the other hand these are some high level chokes and most of the fighters tap out extremely late (obviously, they fight to win)so being fast enough to call it is sometimes not even possible.
Another excellent video. This is why I started doing judo many years ago, and then MMA and now no-gi JJ.

I've seen what is called an omoplata in BJJ referred to as sankaku ude-garami in Judo. Am I remembering wrong?

@@KamenFighter No omoplata is huizinga roll. It is only roll. If you did this roll you can go to osaekomi technique ushiro kesa gatame and if you have opponent hand between legs you can use ashi gatame technique (kansetsu waza) too.

I don't know much about Judo but I find it fascinating and I'd like my daughters to learn it (if they want to), as it'll help teach them discipline and self control, plus they seem quite unafraid to practise throws and chokes on each other (and me).
One thing that strikes me here is that the referees seem to be seeing exactly what is happening with these chokes but then it's like they're waiting for something else to happen, like they don't imagine the choke will be the first thing that they should be seeing. Like if you're struggling to answer a question a tutor has put to you and you give an answer and they say "it's good but to be honest, I need a little more". Only here, the answer solves the problem, then the problem is the other judoka is already unconscious. Then the referee realises the fight has resolved itself without their control and then they're too late.
They are waiting for the chokee to tap out.
It isn't a problem in class, but in a competition the ref doesn't know if you're being choked or it just looks like it (they should probably move around more).
I'd tell you not to worry about your daughters, the hardest thing that happened in class to me was a nosebleed.

The pressure that the judo ground game has is very different from a Brazilian jiu-jitsu ground game and in my opinion it's just Superior

Wait a minute, Kata Gatame is a choke? It's one of the exactly TWO newaza techniques I know so far as a white belt but I learnt it as a pin.
But thinking about it... I was once caught in it and it was quite suffocating so... yeah, maybe it's a choke...
Kata gatame is osaekomi (pin) not shimewaza (choke) of course! But if Tori doing this technique cleverly and exactly Tori achieves suffocating effect often and he forces opponent to tap earlier.

It is actually more safe because back in the days you could have done arm lock throw which are incredibly dangerous
lol what? being chocked is the safest thing that can happen in a judo contest. There are countless people that got injured in a throw, and to my knowledge, _zero_ injuries or casualties due to chockes.
The level of referees is so low that it really makes it dangerous to competitors.
Mirage- Broken bone or brain damage ? I don’t think You understand how chocke works. If You stop it in time that’s ok, but if if You will not - brain damage or death. And a lot of this attacks should be stopped by referees. If a competitor is tapping or is unresponsive referee should stop the fight immediately. But he has to know what is going on tatami in the first place, I guess.

Now this excites me, some awesome ne-waza in judo! I don’t care that much about the throws in judo because it became pretty boring (not always though) after they changed the rules (no longer allowed to touch the legs), a lot of really efficient throws went to waste. I like the ground fighting in judo a bit more then in BJJ because in judo they get less time to do ground fighting so they got to have a faster pace and be efficient without all the fancy techniques. The only downside is that the referees are absolute shit sometimes, they don’t even look at what’s happening and miss the taps. People get choked unconscious because the ref isn’t paying attention. BJJ has way better refs if it comes to the athlete’s safety.
The big difference, apart from these refs being shitty, is that they have to judge in real time whether it is a pin, starting the count to 25, or a submission. It's a grey area, and the transition between the two happens all the time. BJJ rules doesn't have pins, so it's quite natural that those refs only look for tapouts.

But, to be honest, in judo chokes "shime waza" and arm locks "kansitsu waza" are very fast and could happen in seconds. If a choke happens firmly, the other judoka "athlete" can pass out in 3 to 5 seconds.
Not like in BJJ, it takes longer time.
In judo, the referee should have a very high sense of "ne waza" ground fighting, otherwise he will not be able to see what is going to happen. That's why some of the referees looks like stupid and the athlete passes out for seconds which defenitely can be dangerous.
In my humble opinion the true Kosin judo ground game is far superior to the b JJ style of ground game

Most of the Refs from Judo are like screw its not my kid.
I think personally it is very bad sportsmanship from uke to not tap out when it's on. When you are a professional judoka you know when a choke is on or not and if it is on, you should just tap, whether it is training or the finals of the olympics. You might die and traumatize tori and the ref for the rest of their lives, you have to know when to give up!

Okuri eri means both lepels. So if tori uses one lepel, it is NOT okuri eri jime!
Wrong. The "oku(ri)" (送) of Okuri eri jime actually by itself means to send, but can also be slide. The "eri" (襟) is lapel and "jime" (絞) is strangle/ constriction.
Any choke using the lapel is a form of okuri eri jime.
