    I noticed a lot of people asking why they have no claws, these aren't lobsters, they just look like them so we call them lobsters, it's a misnomer. In the decapod crustaceans, actual lobsters are in infraorder astacidea, but spiny lobsters are in achelata. shrimp are caridea, crabs are brachyura. basically these "lobsters" are as far from true lobsters as crabs are from lobsters so don't expect them to have claws etc. The word "Lobster" is NOT monophyletic, clearly we call Maine lobsters and Spiny lobsters both lobsters, but they're actually from different infraorders. This will blow your mind, king crabs are not crabs either. Alaskan king crabs are from infraorder Anomura along with hermit crabs, and like I said, crabs are Brachyura. anyone notice king crabs have 6 legs instead of 8? That's why.

    Good job on releasing the big ones, man you clean up, I'm assuming you are in California? Man I love bug diving. That's more like bug catching! I live in the Carolinas and they say the lobster diving here in the Carolinas , typically you have to dive about 100' deep, but they say they are monsters. Too deep for me though, don't mind going deep, just don't want to be preoccupied hunting for bugs at that depth. I have a 10' and shallower honey hole in the florid keys that I love to go to. Just haven't been in a few years :(

    • @MrRJCtube
      @MrRJCtube  8 років тому +1

      Lobsters like structure, even if the lobsters are seen in the open (flat areas) there is probably structure nearby. They are usually hiding during the day, but sometimes come out at night. The video was shot at depths from about 20-60 feet deep.

    Rick, nice work all around. Camera lighting is taken for granted by non hunters so nice footage in so cals murky waters. Also, good work on your grabs as usual. Your two handed approach has served you well for keeping them in possession of all their legs and antenna when you let um go! Great example with that concluding your video on big bugs! Can't tell you how many big females, whether plastered or not, I have seen taken by hoopers and commercial poachers with no clue as to what they are doing to the ecosystem.

    I'd love it if you could do a quick video on your light/camera rig. I attach my GoPro to my Octomask, but can't figure out a good light setup to free up both hands. I always have to drop my light at the last second for a two handed grab, or a double grab. Sometimes that causes me to miss grab it scares them just in time.

    • @MrRJCtube
      @MrRJCtube  9 років тому +4

      +Luke Everett I have been using Niterider HID lights (company out of business) mounted on each side of my head with their scuba hood mount. That's what all the lobster video was recoreded with. They are big and bulky and also have heavy attached battery packs. They have served their purpose though, but I"m retiring them (should be on ebay sometime soon) My brand new solution is an archon d11v light attached to my mask strap. For the best video you want a wide light without a hot spot. The archon is a wide video light. Video lights however aren't great at penetrating long distances, so I also have a small light with a tight beam on a retractor. This light can be let go for two handed grabs and/or turned off for the best video. If you want any more info feel free to private message me.

      +Josh Ross its a crab trap. traps are made with a steal cage you put meat in and the crab/lobster go eat it, the leg probably got caught in it and the lobster caught as well, but instead of dealing with a monster lobster the person who caught the poor animal just cut off the trap. it won't harm the animal at all seeing if it grows any bigger it just sheds the exoskeleton the trap is on.

      Not a clawed species, when most people think of lobster they think of Maine lobster, (homarus americanus) these are California Spiny lobsters (panulirus interruptus). You have to wear kevlar gloves, it's like catching a cactus that squirms. They can cut you pretty badly.
