I just realized he`s developed his delivery to the point anything he says sounds like it should be funny. Like when he says "I appreciate that", it's not even funny, but the way he says it makes you smile.
At this point my funny bones are tickled just by his presence. Like he doesn’t need to be doing anything, just a picture of Louis is enough to make me smile.
It's not really the delivery so much as the knowledge/conditioning of the audience. There once was a mixup at a Christian event, where the schedule said there would be someone doing stand-up, but instead a Priest went on stage with a speech telling a pretty harrowing personal story around the theme of losing faith. The poor priest couldn't figure out why the crowd kept laughing at his past misfortunes, and even asked them to stop laughing, which only made them laugh even harder. They were laughing because the event's schedule had conditioned them to expect stand up at that time-slot, which injected by default a humorous tone to his words, and transformed his sincere speech into dark/cynical dry humour. Point is: if you selected an audience of people who didn't know Louis CK and had never heard his stand up before, they wouldn't have laughed at "I appreciate that". But we go "Hey it's the funny man! I like the funny man" and therefore are already predisposed to laughing at whatever he's gonna say before he even says it. Because he always does a good job of saying funny things, and we also want to do a good job as an audience and be generous with our laughter. Human social psychology is fun!

this is the first time i`ve seen him as a rich hollywood celebrity. i had accepted the idea that he was a loser single dad in real life for some reason.. true legend despite the shitty mistakes of his past.
