“Mary, Mary!” Why ya buggin’?
“Mary, Mary!” I need ya huggin’
#RunDMC #MaryMary #TougherThanLeather
Mike Nesmith died today... He loved this spin on a great song... This one is for you Michel... #RIPMikeNesmith
Imagine what Mary Mary would say if she heard rap music in the 2000's. Run DMC is downright wholesome as far as rap music goes.
Mary, Mary would change station, and rightly so.
Mary Mary why you buggin
I wonder if she's Ben Shapiro's mum, she talks hellafast :o
It’s such garbage now

Run dmc knowledge of rock music was integral to their success. They along with the beastie boys were the spear hip hop needed to pierce thru to the mainstream.
RUN DMC had ZERO knowledge of rock and roll history LMFAO
Rick Rubin?
@@edwagner7473 I think the original poster was talking about their knowledge of rock music sonically, not that they knew the history of rock. You don't need to know the whole history of it to have a knowledge of rock music.
Run Dmc was integral for hip-hop AS WELL as hip hop, it was thanks to Rick Ruben no doubt, but they still got on stage with hip-hop gear and everything that rap embodied and still made music that naturally reflected rock and street culture, Run-Dmc was the greatest "rap and rock" group of all time.
Rest In Peace Good Rap Music! 1979-2000s!!
🌮
Love the way they sample the Monkees ...musical genius !!!
I was just listening to the monkeys tonight, and Mary Mary came on, and I'm like, dang, that's where DMC got it from. It's cool, I think so, I love the monkeys and DMC..🤟 I grew up on both..
This is a master class on what we should all be buggin!
Why can't we have music like this anymore?!
because we have trash like 6ix9ine and Cardi B
Times change my friend, but its still here to enjoy.
@@michaelolin2219 times change no kidding he's allowed to have an opinion about it
@@roshansprague7758 what I should have said was "we still do". It was a friendly comment. You may need to go outside and get some air.
Because everyone in nowadays concerns about earning money, not making music
The concert footage for this video was shot on June 9, 1988 at their show in Albany, Georgia. They performed the song twice, for the cameras. That's my skinny white elbow sticking in from the left side of the frame around the 3:36 mark. Opening acts that night included Public Enemy, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and JJ Fad.
Yes I remember this concert I was there at this concert on the front row wearing a white shirt I was spinning a white towel round and round June the 9th of 1988 Albany Georgia I was in trade school in Albany Georgia Turner Job corps center next to the Miller brewing company after this concert I went to the 8-ball motel was the spot. I think it was on South slappey avenue there were other groups that came later on that summer got a chance to see Tina Turner salt and pepper Keith sweat and LL Cool j and Eric being rakim slick Rick the ruler it was epic actually went back to the 8-ball motel was going to the 3rd floor and the elevator opened up and guess who was in the elevator salt and pepper in their DJ spinderella with two big giant security guards 🤣🤣🤣🤣 it was epic I was starstruck
Yeah I'm in the video around 2:41 and 3:43 they had to do a double take on the video because run fell down the steps I think he had a little bit to drink that night and when they threw the lady off the stage I was standing to the left with a white towel in my left pocket I had a white shirt on I also remember that we was hitting a giant beach ball around in the crowd 1988 of June the 9th man this was epic
@DIGITAL TRADE MUSIC lovin the elbow! my wrist is in the bon jovi “bed of roses” video! our arm parts are the coolest around!!
That was one "FAT" show you witnessed. All those acts showed up. In the place to be.
Oh my Jesus you had one great moment in time that night!
Every time I meet a lady named Mary, I still sing this song
When I worked in a restaurant in the late 80's. The teen age dishwashers would sing this song to me.
Haha me too! Although I don't meet many Mary's but if I see the name or hear it I think of this song.
Omg my name is Mary and I hear this daily
Damn I MISS THE 80's!!! The ROck, The Rap, The POp, The New Wave, The Punk I didn't realize how Good I Had It!! I thought Music would Just stay good forever.
Yap that’s how you do it , take a classic hook it book it and enjoy 👍
There is still great music just it is underrated and underground. In the mass music industry, music sucks compared to then.
Us 90’s kids that the same thing about our generation sadly.
Man I use to love this jam, Jam Master J killed that beat. This is REAL HIP HOP. How do I miss this Era.
Run DMC is untouchable
This video was filmed in Albany, GA when Run DMC was on tour and came to my hometown...I think it was 1985. I remember it like it was yesterday because there were umbrellas in the video as it had rained that day. I was at that concert, and it was dope!! Those were the good ole dayz...
Michael Nesmith was impressed with the fact that RUN DMC wanted to use samples of his song Mary Mary for their record. RIP Mike.
One of the major things i love about Run DMC is their drum beats. All their drum beats bring that rhythmic vibe thru ur body man!!!!!!
Jam Master J !!! RIP
Yes brother . I'm with you . The pioneers .
Props to Mike Nesmith of Monkees and Mike Nesmith (!) fame, who wrote this great song and RUN-DMC who did this awesome version
Yeah! The video is great! It almost look like a clip form the Monkees TV show! :)
Only the chorus/scratch . The other part of sound came from "I Can't Stop" song.
Yeah and *Hal Blaine The drummer* on the original Monkees track, surelly Inspired on the groovy beat of Don Julián & The Larks "The Jerk" (1964).
@@PourlephoneProductions Mike busted out some damfine rap himself back in 1969, no question: ua-cam.com/video/a4kKYLocUa4/v-deo.html
Now it's quite awhile ago I had a strange intuition
Something was wrong with my gold record situation...
Why they say with so much adoration...
Well the devil incarnate runnin' music supervision
Put me into a state of cataleptic euphemism...
Somebody's preachin' 'bout the wonder world of Communism...

I love that they covered Mike Nesmith’s song. It’s just so out of the blue and he apparently loved it himself.
Long live Run DMC, long live old school hip-hop. This song is the ringtone for my Aunt Mary.
I used to pick at my late Aunt Mary with this song. RIP Aunt Mary. ❤️ 🙏
The first time I heard this it blew my mind because they were sampling The Monkees true musicians know true music. Big ups to Run DMC trailblazers Hip-Hop
We had them then, we have them now...
Go Run, Go DMC...
RIP Jay!
Had this sung in my face all of senior year of high school lol, great music!! Those days are long gone!
The kings of rap
"Stop smokin' crack but you're sill gettin' pissy...."
Best line of the song!
Shout out to all the other chicks named Mary who grew up around this time and have had this song following them for over 35 years! I've loved it, hope you have too😉
My childhood right here. My sister's name is Mary, so of course when this song came out we use to tease her. "Mary Mary why you buggin!" lol
Almost40born78 that's funny hahahaha
Oh yeah.
rap rock is awesome!! i can remember when RUN-DMC exploded onto MTV in the 80's. great music!
This is the shit!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP Jam Master Jay
Take a masterpiece MONKEES song...give it to RUN-DMC and you get another MASTERPIECE!!!

Back when rap was actually... music!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everdry that is true
Dam right
You do know that the original was written by Michael Nesmith, right?
Good, clean fun!
Gotta love a hip hop group that had the nerve to sample the Monkees, even leaving in some of Micky Dolenz's vocal!
I love that this is a cover of a Monkees song.
Both versions are great.
not really a cover since it's totally different.
More like a rip not a cover.
Who are the Monkees??
@@Strideo1 man I missed that boat lol.. Run DMC still the better version tho.
@@monoped8437 Yeah, if they hadn't kept the title it wouldn't be an issue. Nobody ever claims that Del tha Funky Homosapien's "Mistadobalina" is a "cover" of the Monkees' "Zilch"!

Yes! It actually had a message!

Kicking down doors!
if you know who is the original band that sang Mary, Mary you're awesome 😊😊
P.s. it was The Monkees ☺
It was the Paul Butterfield Blues Band
@@jerrygee866 True. They recorded and released a version of Mike Nesmith's tune before the Monkees did. There's also a video here on YT of Davy Jones singing "I'm Gonna Buy Me a Dog" a year before the Monkees even formed! Weirder still is a comic book from 1966 I found with a strip showing a band called The Rotting Stumps performing the song "Shattered" a decade before the Stones wrote it(?!?)
@@kenlieck7756 Thank you, Ken, will look for it now!

I was devastated when Jam Master Jay was murdered. As a kid in the 80s Run DMC was the best.

He was killed while drug dealing.
He was a member of the biggest rap group.

Rap was once good believe it or not when it 1st started out in the late 70's until the middle part of the 90's after that it sucks & still does.
+Mr. Allen C. Sokolik Jr. (Awesome One) there is good rap today, but too it is too dominated by a cpl ppl so everything sounds like the other then the someone changes whats popular and everyone follows along. also too many songs all have the same ppl as the cameo. usually because it is their label, i.e lil wayne or rick ross was on every song on the radio a cpl years ago. it was ridiculous. but there is still good hip hop out there. kid cudi did his own thing with his own sound and wutang is still out there. the method man album 4:21 the day after was from like 2010 and was awesome. idk what haters say eminem was great and yelawolf is also pretty good imo
Mostly agree, but if we're being honest... much of early rap (though groundbreaking), sounds pretty cringeworthy today.
hawaiidispenser true, but i think it was the heavy synth use that makes it sound dated and terrible, i mean synth was in all types of music in 1980 it was ridiculous, rap was no different. hell even the clash went synth then. anyway the flows were pretty bad to, but i think the issue there is more it sounds corny because the slang is dated and hiphop/rap is slang reliant
braf zachland I'm actually perfectly fine with the synths; they give a futuristic/fantasy vibe, for me anyway. I was actually referring to the grade-school level rhyming and rigid, awkward flow.
