  • In this video we test out and dyno this old school Alpine MRP-M500 amp, this version was replaced by the very similar MRV-M500 and both should perform about the same. In addition to testing with load resistors I also test with a subwoofer to show you real world performance.

About the amp dyno: I am using resistors along with an SMD DD-1 plus and and SMD AMM-1 to detect distortion, measure clipping, and measure power in watts. Unlike most amp dyno videos I also include a reactive test to show real-world amplifier power. ‪@meade916‬ ‪@wal‬

Great video! There are a lot of factors that effect impedance with speakers, so that's why the resistive loads really tell how the amp performs compared to other amps. It's awesome to show the actual power going to the speakers as well because it's rarely anywhere near what people expect it is at a single frequency. Music playback will vary the impedance also and "music power" may be much higher, but it's usually for short periods. Keep up the great work, I love to see more amp tests because there are 1000's of amps out there and the more people testing, the better!

These Alpine amps fall into a category I call "common man workhorse amps". Not a lot of bells and whistles as indicated by the lug style connectors. These Alpines arein that category along with JBL, Infinity, Sony, Clarion and Pioneer, etc. from the same era.
All very solid performers that usually make more than rated power and are durable. They are often overlooked nowadays and as a result they can be had for cheap.

Don't feel bad if you can't figure out the configuration of that Alpine. Barevids will tell you how complicated they are but it all is down to quality Alpine designs their own amplifiers.

The smd amm-1 has very cheap leads and female banana receptical. If you break it don't expect a response from s.m.d. I know

The term "box rise" is a misnomer and should never be used.

Check out barevids, he’s an expert on amps. Most amps are built the same, the big name brands just like to rip you off

On the contrary, companies like Alpine, JL, Kenwood, Rockford Fosgate design and engineer their own bespoke circuits, some are even using full bridge topology for their designs, the ripoffs are the cookie cutter Korean half bridge clones all over the place, some are so generic that it's hard to tell the guts apart.
