We used the Noordoewer tag to help people separate this Helskloof Pass from the one in the Richtersveld. We used Viooolsdrift to identify the other hellish pass "Road to hell" Hope that explains it all.
@@TrygveRoberts Thanks for the reply. The name Noordoewer, suggests that this is "Noord van die rivier oewer", and describes the settlement called Noordoewer, that was established before Namibia and South Africa was separated. I understand what you tried to do, but it actually makes it more confusing. Having grown up in Vioolsdrift, and where our family farmed for 70+ years, and also establishing the first river/overland camp in 1988, we have had many encounters with tourists and that is why I know. An interesting fact about the statues people build just below the helskloof pass, is that this started in the early 1990's. As a child I still remember there not being any, and then people started building it when the national park became more known and more vehicles started to have air-conditioning that was capable to drive these roads I think :) But overall I really like your videos, it is very informative. Thank you.
@@DerekGagiano We do our best as I'm sure you do. As a person from a big city (CT) I see the two little settlements as one separated by the Gariep, You'll be amazed how many people get confused when it comes to pass names. There are a number which have the same name (Helskloof Pass is a good example) or very similar names like Die Hel and Road to Hell and Hel se Pad. We use nearby place names to helop people not get confused. I cant change it now. There will be a hue and cry.
This pass is near Vioolsdrift, not in Noordoewer. Noordoewer is north of the RSA and NAM border.
It's the same place to all intents and purposes. Just the river separating the two places.
