This scene encapsulates everything I love about John Mcclane. He does what he does because it's the right thing to do, not for glory. He's saved a lot of people over the years and yet his private life with his family isn't what it should be.
@@angryman1206 that is such a idiotic thing to do. He married way way... before. He was just a good guy at the wrong time in the wrong place. But glad there are people like him in the world. on in this movie world lol.
This is really meta. It really shines a light on the whole idea of heroes. People just expect someone else to come save the day instead of rising to the occasion themselves. The message is clear. It’s easy to wait for someone else to fix a problem. Do what is right, not what is easy. I have nothing against hero’s being role models or something for people to be inspired by to do good things themselves. The problem arises when people wait for a knight in shining armor to come save them.
But then again, there are some people who actually wanna do something about deadly situations but lack the strength and abilities it takes to do the task.If it were easy, everyone would do it,but it isn't.Then it gets worse when people don't have the ability to save themselves first and then save others, and it doesn't help either if the enemy has the strength and resources you need. Then again, the enemy who causes problems to others is guaranteed to achieve the wind, which means that no matter what, they will always end up empty-handed.

“If I wanted all the glory, I wouldn’t wear a mask” -Peter Parker Being a true hero isn’t what you think, and this scene proves that perfectly. Yes you save the day, you save the innocent people and stop the bad guys but here’s the hard truth. You take all the pain and suffering you get along the way that comes with it and you don’t get a big fat sum, you don’t always get the girl, you don’t get a special award or medal. Being a hero is a sacrifice and giving away any chance of ever having a normal life
This sums it up, true. Like ExistentialJedi said below, it's a fantastic piece of philosophical dialogue in a B grade action movie for the masses, but that's what being a hero is like. I don't wear a cape and a mask, but I have often times rescued people from dire situations, gone into horrible places, looked at danger and the face of pure evil. For what? Because no one else will, someone's got to do it.
It's about morality though. Sure nobody else will, but why don;t you be like everyone else and just not do it? Because you couldn't live with yourself if you didn't. So you "have to" but not because you want to but because of how your brain is wired for doing whats right.
@@MrWolfSnack I think it's less "you couldn't live with yourself if you didn't" and more "There's a job that needs to be done, and I'm the one that can do it, so I should do it." This is part of what has made me "that guy" through the years. I don't save lives. I don't do heroics. But, I'm that guy none-the-less. There is a job that needs to be done. I can do it. So, I do it, if nobody else steps up. I wait to see if anyone will step up. Nobody ever does. So, I do the job. I get it done. I throw my everything into it. I try to make sure the job stays done for as long as possible so I don't have to step up again later. That's what makes people "that guy". There's a job that needs to be done. You can do it. So, you do it. Even if you hate it. You do it, because you are the one who can. That's why McClaine says what he says here. "I'm not a hero, I'm just doing my job."
Same here bud. Don’t know why we do it. We don’t get anything out of it other than being chewed out by loved ones. I remember one time when there was a dog that got off its chain and attacked a neighbors dog. I heard the screaming and nobody did anything about it. So I did. I ran in and delivered a solid punch to the attacking dogs nose which caused it to let go of it’s opponent. I comforted the owner and calmed her down until the police came and then left. Never got so much as a thank you for it and yet I would do it again if need be. Why?! Because nobody else would do anything and I can’t just sit back and do nothing. My wife was furious with me and asked “what if the dog turned on you?!” The owner of the dog that got lose just yelled at me for it claiming her dog got injured too. I still feel bad about having to clobber a dog in the nose because I know how painful that is for them. That’s what being “that guy” is at the end of the day. I don’t feel like a hero or anything special and no one will remember it yet I’d still do it again in a heartbeat. Because I was there and no one else would do anything. One of many examples I have of being that guy. Definitely not how you think it would be when you were a kid.
There is a reason for for so many views and and very few likes. When you you need to save someone a lot of people run away. I was the one to save someone and most people turned their backs on him. I gave all I could do for that purpose and it left me with with nothing but a sense of duty to save the fallen. People told me to abandon that person to reach fulfillment for myself. I discovered a higher fulfillment by serving my brother.
Its not about being a hero. Its a sense of duty and being true to yourself. John mcclane could have just walk away from the situation like any normal person would do and save his own ass but no he fought to save other people's life. Maybe thats the reason why he never rose above the rank of detective. Just like harry callahan from dirty harry who never made it above the rank of inspector and led a lonely life. These people do exist in real life where doing their job is the greatest thing for them. Its their life and vacation at the same time. They weren't kissass. Its also the reason why they have only few friends. And i guess being all alone and all by themselves is the price they have to pay.And one day they either die on duty or die all alone their house or oldage homes. Their kids should understand why their dad and their mums could never give them the time they deserved and thats how kids grow up hating their parents. Holly sucks , John took all those punches , all those bullet wounds , walked on all that glass , put up with all those explosions , saved her life along with legions of other humans throughout the first two movies and saved their daughter's life in this movie and she still divorced him , a husband like John in real life is nearly every monogamous woman's ideal lover truth be told , does anyone agree ?
I think of this to be a very layered and cumbersome situation on both sides. Holly, likely saw PTSD signs in John over the years that she tried to help him thru but couldn’t, along with other day-to-day conflicts that all couples have. John, probably felt unable to allow himself to ever be happy with Holly and the kids after so many horrible events occurred where he found himself in the middle of them having to save the day time after time. This is getting too in depth but, it just goes to show that unfortunately, life is never perfect for anyone and especially for our heroes it can be easier to simply go thru a constant struggle than to ever allow our selves to ever get confident in achieving a desired peace of mind.
