Couldn’t agree more, I’m still using the V on a RT and have the same issues. It does get a little easier after time but why have to go through all the fuss? Cheers Folks, keep the vids coming, always enjoy them.

I've also found it best to use the Diamond favourite key (as mentioned by Keith Lynch) on Menu button to store the Navigation page, then it's one push and your on the right page, but considering how competent the rest of the bike is it could have be done better on the RT. Also the auto zoom helps on the Nav6 for junctions etc. Additionally, I've also just had a large software update done on the bike at the running in check, but no change on the Nav zoom function.
+Janice Hopwood good tip for the diamond key as Keith mentioned too. Wish bmw had updated the software to bring in some extra features for the RT.
Chaps, Worth mentioning The K1600’s do have a hot key function to allow you to go straight to a stored page without scrolling through the menu , not as easy as the GS to zoom the map however It’s made a bit easier if your on tour using the hot key to select the navigation menu.

Agree about the scroll wheel issue on the GTL. I use the diamond set button to make the Nav the favorite menu page anticipating I'll unintentionally lose my place so I can at least get back quickly to it. Hope BMW somehow comes up with the direct scrolling with the wheel at some point but hey, it's only a $30,000 motorcycle so you can't ask for too much.

Inthink the issue is more for people who have used the nav on a GS, I have never ridden a GS and I don't have any issues zooming in and out on my 1600GT. I just save the Nav screen to the quick find button and zoom in and out effortlessly.
I recently purchased a k16gtl and the previous owner kept the nav unit. After watching this I'm convinced that I'm not going to be getting one of these nav units. I'll just use my phone for nav.
Maybe faf about with the jockey wheel while parked, and while riding, keep an eye on the dangers around you, seems like good advice.
Thanks for hilighting this. It’s a shame that the way it works isn’t like the gs or even the new lcd screens which just hand over the click wheel to the sat nav completely when requested.

I agree..I found the 5 easier to use on my previous RS. The 6 on the RT is naff. On a different subject your hi-viz, i have a similar one but i'm looking to upgrade to the Helite Turtle Hi-Viz air bag vest at the NEC next week. Have you tried these out?

All thé informations on thé bike alors works on a k1600gt 2014 or its juste on later models?
It looks like they've addressed this issue with the new TFT dash on GSs, where you toggle the scroll wheel usage between controlling either the satnav or controlling the dash - they need to do same for RT

You RiderCam guys are probably good people to ask this question of: genuinely, how do you find the Nav 5/6 (or any Garmin Zumo Nav) for actually following a planned route? I spent hours with mine trying to get it to do what I wanted and I just can't do it. I love the fact that it integrates nicely with the GS and the wizz wheel etc. but the actual functionality my mate gets from his TomTom is far better in terms of planning and then following a route. If you guys are happy with the way these function when you are touring/guiding with a big group I'd love to make some kind of video or guide on this to learn myself and to help others. The internet is full of people frustrated with Garmin. I use one for hot air balloon flying and find that if you invest some time understanding the 'Garmin way' they are pretty good, but I just haven't got to that that point with this BMW one :(
Just as an example, if I get a route, either that I've planned on Basecamp/Furkot or one that my mate has sent me that comes from TyreToTravel, I have to compromise with very few points (call it a low resolution route) and if I stray from the route the nav just seems to re-calculate from current position to the end point of that route. These things all take ages to test too because you have to set up a route for somewhere you know you'll be going and then gear up, go out and test it and then try and remember exactly what happened!
If I plan a route and send it to the app OsmAnd it behaves exactly as I want and expect so it seems ridiculous that Garmin can't do this easily as surely this is the functionality most people want second to just standard routing to a destination on the go?

I think there are issues with whatever make of sat nav you choose. TomTom and Garmin are clearly the better 2, but it depends on what you like as you said.
I find that the TomTom was very good, and for me (only subjective) is that they have tried to make the new ones more like smartphones and tablets, very very nice to use in terms of the screen but I find them fiddly and complicated when all you need to do is ride!
To transfer files to a Garmin is easy as it shows up as another drive on your computer but TomTom is fiddly here again and having to use third-party software to install a route is a pain for me. And then there is having to use the original TomTom lead to do anything with it from the computer which is another frustration when you are on the road and need to sort it out quickly with your laptop.
I find following a route on the Garmin (BMW NAV VI) really easy and it recalculates so quick its great. The screen is vibrant and does not suffer too much with reflections and yes the whizz wheel is fab, and the integration into the bike is also good, but at the end of the day I use it to navigate and the wheel is a godsend!
We use Motogoloco to do our routes and then export them as a GPX file and then pop them onto the Garmin and hey presto they are there for import. Import done and off we go.....
Don't get me wrong, Garmin are not infallible, and I have found some issues at times, with the sat nav map spinning out of control and other odd anomalies but all in all, I have found them trouble free and a great tool.
Yep have a K1600 GT & the 2016 GSA and the “wonder wheel” GPS functionality on the GT is just crap, quite irritating actually that I use my iPhone over the SatNav 😎

hi i have navigator 5 and when i plug it to 2016 bmw r 1200 rt, my motorcycle option does not work. navigator 5 in the engine may also be caused in the current state.
I've got a 16 plate RT and SatNav 6 and concur with your analysis. I don't know why BMW can't pass all the satnav functionality thru the wiz wheel. Having to use the Menu button to select a different page first is a bridge too far whilst riding a 125HP bike and look where you're going IMHO, so I won't do it. Maybe they can correct this with a software update?

Couldn’t agree more mate. Can’t understand why BMW engineered such fantastic GPS integration on the GS and failed so miserably on the RT. Agree on the software upgrade and hope they do it.
i have a 2014 K1600GT and i don t have that "My Motorcycle" page, i really wwanted to get that page...
doesnt the Nav6 have a touch screen to zoom in or out in the top left without using the wheel
Where is the "My motorcycle" screen on the Nav5 on the RT? I'm getting a screen which shows info, but it looks nothing like yours and doesn't show tire pressure, voltage etc?
Can you suggest where can i purchase this one?
I think there is a favourites button on the left control that you can set to go to your nav page witch does save a lot of scrolling and with may be two button presses this will talk you straight there😉 but to be far I think this is a major safety issue a BMW need to sort this pronto 😐
Yep there is a favourites button you can set on any screen, but as you say it’s a safety issue with fumbling through menus that’s a real shame
You also lose the scroll wheel functionality on both Nav V and VI with the TFT screens fitted to the newer GS models. I had a 2015 GS where the V worked as described, I now have a 2018 GS with TFT and the Nav doesn’t work with the scroll wheel as before, tried it both with the V and my mates VI. That said the TFT allows turn by turn navigation via the BMW app which links with the screen, set your route in the app and away you go, possibly the Navigators will become a thing of the past as the TFT technology develops and rolls out further across the range.
Which is why the NAVs are completely pointless expense for the RT (and Bagger), when it's primary function is as a Satnav.
I wonder if the 2018 gs/gas with the new TFT dash is going to be like the 1600 or the older gs/gsa ?

you could do of course, but if your favourite is the heated seats and bars or something else, it defeats the object... poor use of the scroll wheel really
Huh, on the button that says "Menu", you can click the rhombus icon and that makes the wheel operate the nav instead of the LCD screen. Click "Menu" to map the wheel back to the LCD screen. When you have the satnav installed and selected the rhomb icon, the wheel behaves just as much as on the GS.
Hi, which menu button do you mean and what rhombus icon? I can’t see this on my RT...but very keen to find a solution to this issue...:)

Good evening Toby. I have a 2018 BMW 1200RT and I cant seem to get the sat nav to do anything with the wiz wheel whilst in the navigation menu. Am I being stupid or am I doing something wrong. ?
Hey buddy, thanks for the question. Not ridden an RT with the nav for some time but remember I had to navigate to it on the dashboard before it let me operate the nav. Such a faff

Question: Once you zoom in or out, does the Nav retain that zoom setting, or is there something else that needs to happen to make sure the distance stays at the place where you change it to?
it retains the zoom setting usually. I think you can set it to auto zoom on junctions etc..

Point of intrest to any K1600B owners ! the sat nav surround ? there are two types ! one for the nav 5 and one for the 6 ? soon know mine was sent out with a 5 and when I put a 6 unit I there is a 1/4" gap around the bugger ! also DONT buy the ground lighting kit from BMW they wont set the computer on your bike for it to work :( gits even though I have one fitted !

I am so disappointed with the nav5 on my RT. After using it on a GS I thought something was wrong with it. Well theres not, you just loose a number of key features.
It’s a shame the the RT didnt retain all the GS features for the nav.
As an owner of a 2018 K1600GTL, I find this review a little biased. On a GS or GSA prior to TFT screen models, the wonder wheel controlled only the GPS unit. This allows the wonder wheel to be devoted to just zoom in or out. On RT or K1600 bikes, the wonder wheel controls practically everything... settings, audio, hand and seat warmers, navigation, suspension, trip odometers, etc. Having the wonder wheel set to just zoom in our out would be a waste of functionality. It's not that counterintuitive to access the navigation menu and select zoom + or zoom -.
hey buddy, thanks for the comments, perhaps they could have done what they have done on the TFT screen for the GSA where you press a single button and hold it to access the sat nave controls and vice versa. A but of a faf to be honest to navigate menus to gain a function that could be set quickly. but thanks so much for the comments, its always great to hear from different peoples perspectives :)
Navigator VI integration with the R1250RT is shite! Trying to fiddle with it while riding is a recipe for a disaster. I would have been better-off simply sticking with my smart phone rather than buying the Navigator . . . . . given I have a Cardo Packtalk "merged" with my phone.
That is not so easy while riding!

I dont care taht much that it is not easy. What I have problem with is that it is not safe during riding.
Why not just use your cellphone? Most modern smartphones are waterproof and have a GPS function. Just sayin'...
These darn things are upwards of 1000 USD, way too much money in my opinion.

@@RiderCamTV I tried google maps on a Samsung phone , can`t see the screen in the sun , when the 4G signal is lost ,so does the guidance , it gets really hot , i found you can`t beat having a device that does one job only ,not 10 .
@@MegaFred8888 I was trying to explain that to a group of guys at work and only 1 out of 5 even knew what i was talking about. For using a iPad or iPhone out of range i use a device called “Bad Elf” vehicle use not on a bike
Nothing personal, but what a load of rubbish. The auto zoom on nav vi is bloody excellent. Plan your trips on basecamp, load em up and it works faultlessly. IMHO you shouldn’t be Di king around with the menus while moving. When stopped you can do it all!
